Davinson Sanchez

He's been hit and miss so far. He's stood strong when we've been under a lot of pressure, but when we've had time to play or when he's been isolated he's had shaky moments.

As others have said, we may see Jose getting a new aggressive CB partner to fit in alongside Toby next year with Sanchez as third choice. Tanganga will be fourth choice with secondary roles at LB and RB whilst Foyth either goes on loan or is sold. He's a player that we don't 100% need yet is worth some money that we can re-invest elsewhere.

Sánchez often looks nervous or uncomfortable on the ball to me, like he doesn't really trust himself. I'm not sure whether that can be coached out of him now.

Which is the point of a CB. Stones is supposedly a great passer. Would anyone have stones instead of Sanchez? I certainly wouldn't! Stones can't defend for toffees, and despite being a good passer, he frequently gives the ball away.

Centre backs see a lot of the ball. Alderweireld has the highest average passes per game in our team, ignoring KWP (small sample) Vertonghen is second and Sanchez third. All making between 55 and 65 passes per game.

To me that aspect of their game matters. The point of a centre back is much more than defending. Not being good enough defensively will always be a deal breaker, not being good enough on the ball won't matter in some teams, but will matter a lot in other teams.

I think it matters a lot for us, Mourinho might see it differently.

He may look nervous on the ball and his passing isn’t great but his actual defending is generally better than a LOT of CBS held in higher regard

he hasn’t been bullied this season which was something to critique him for last season

I do think the modern game seems to want more and more rounded players and forgets the core duty of those. Keepers have to be able to play ok pitch. Fbs have to be wingers. CBS need to be able to tackle like Stuart Pearce and pass like Hoddle.. and that’s just the defence

and let’s not forget most players are coached within an inch of their life and get binned if they don’t do what their coached to do. It’s almost like we’re trying to recreate an American sport where everything is controlled from the sidelines but specialists

I think the bolded bit is really relavent, he has been here a while now but he is still only 23 and he is still learning. He has overcome the moans about him being bullied and there is no reason he can not improve the rest of his game.

I think he has been solid since Jose took over, a couple of shaky moments but been one of our better players imo.

I would argue he's been our best CB this season and Toby and Jan look notably more stable (Toby in particular) when paired with him rather than with each other. With Toby I think it's because the strain of having to be the more physical pressing CB role is taken by Sanchez and instead he can focus more on positioning and organising.

When tangaga comes on and looks more composed, you know sanchez is in trouble!
Mourinho doesn't have patience with players who don't play like men.

Sanchez defends well
What he doesn’t do well is pass
Tatanga didn’t look too composed when getting dine by Ings the other day. He looked like a kid learning the game after playing really well at FB

One good season followed by two years of regression. One of Poch’s worst signings for my money. Not the worst player but considering Poch wanted to build from the back, well Sanchez is just awful on the ball, bearing that in mind it was an illogical signing. I’d cut our losses and bring someone else in.

Yeah, he’s had enough chances at this stage and keeps making mistakes. He was better a couple of years ago which to me says age isn’t the main problem.

He gifted Rashford a chance against United from nothing, he was culpable for the two second half goals tonight. Even in the first half, he had the ball under no pressure and passed straight to them and put us on the back foot.

He’s also woeful under a high ball. I think it was Saudi Sportswashing Machine earlier in the season where they just lumped balls and he panicked underneath them. An error prone centre back who is poor on the ball and looks susceptible under a high ball will never be good enough. I thought he could become a player but I’ve made my mind up tonight - he’s just not good enough.

Yep. Too many weaknesses and not enough pluses for a £40m defender. I believe he looked better initially partially because teams gave us more respect which allowed him more time on the ball. The problem is neither him or Dier are ball players. United had Vidic to win the ball and Ferdinand as the more cultured passer. I honestly don’t know which one is which when it comes to our CB’s

Ones the bumbling oaf with the turning radius of an oil tanker and the other is the one who can't pass to his teammates - it's the perfect combination

Awful defender.

in a lesser league he might be ok as he has pace

can’t concentrate, loses his man and can’t pass

oddly When playing Ajax/Spurs he always said he targeted him

I think Dier's passing is really good.

All I can say is there doesn't appear to be any improvement since he's joined. I think he might be ok in a quality defence BUT he himself is never going to be a leader or the main man we can build a defence on.

He always looks like he's busy keeping his own game together and that unsettles me and I think opposing teams think if you can load up on him you can unsettle him.
