Interesting...I'd say that if this doesn't happen it'll be down to us/Soldado coming in...personally, I think Villa would be a massively important signing in terms of having a winner out there BUT perhaps his injuries? Who knows. I certainly don't think it will be down to being unable to close it. There will have been a decision about price versus value versus other potential incomings...

Other than twitter rumours, was there any solid evidence that we were ever after him?

Last week Graham Hunter said on Talksport that Villa's representatives visited AVB at our training ground and they were left very impressed with the facilities and what AVB had to say.

Look forward to seeing our new kit tomorrow but I doubt very much it will be unveiled with the announcement that Villa has signed, wishful thinking at best by the looks of it.

well it's already been answered numerous times throughout the thread - lack of offers from bigger clubs and a desire to leave Barca/needs first team football in a WC year

no doubt if a CL side from one of the big leagues wanted him then that's where he'd most likely head but all speculation had ourselves and Fiorentina down as the the only serious bidders and id fancy us over them in that case.

Because it is the best offer on the table?

From an attractive club on the up with a great squad and with of the most exciting talents in world football playing in it, I dont get why people think we dont stand a chance, we really do andI think he will sign and sign soon

it's a defense mechanism so that if it doesn't turn out in our favor they can say "well i never thought it'd happen in the first place so im not bothered" see also : writing off getting 4th at the earliest possible moment

Mundo Deportivo reporting Barcelona and Athletico Madrid meeting next week to discuss transfer of David Villa. Think he'd choose them over us if true.

Stay in Spain
First Team striker at Atletico Madrid
Champions League football

Why wouldn't you sign for them over Spurs?

imagine the meltdown if Levy haggling over a few mil cost us Villa

Indeed.

But doesn't this suggest, if true, that it isn't the money at play here more where Villa wants to play (or more precisely which competitions) rather than Levy blowing it for a million or two?

He might want to experience a new league before retiring? besides Atletico probably wouldn't be able to offer him the wages we will.

certainly a possibility. possibility of living in London, play in one of the best leagues in the world

don't really know the ins and outs but that's probably more the potential reason for him going there over us imv (should he do so) - was just reading the article above and it mentioned Levy squeezing the most out of Barca re price (no evidence of course) and just thought what this place would be like in that instance

Quality opposition every week.

Apart from El Classicos, there's a lot of weeks in the SPL South calendar where Villa's toughest oppostion has been his Barca team mates in training. It's not like Atleti are headed for a long run in this year's CL and the group stages are often hugely unbalanced. Heading into the last World Cup he'll ever be selected for, Spurs and the PL offer far better overall preparation

And, of course, it's the constant expression of this sort of positive thinking, on a hugely-influential, world-wide-read thread, that will tip the balance in our favour.
