How does the chip in the ball know where all the other players are and which team they play for plus whether they are interfering with play or not.

There are cameras tracking all the players. Each player is tracked against 29 points on their body, 50 times a second.

This and the sensor in the ball... Which I suspect measures when it is hit... Provide data for an offside call.

I think we have to assume that this level of accuracy is way beyond any human capability. So this one element that appears to be ticked off the refinement list.

That said I'm not sure if this transfers easily (from a tech pov) to all stadiums. I assume there is a network of cameras required, and is that more hardware beyond what is already installed servicing the current system?

Peter Walton (sappy d*ckhead ex ref on ITV) said earlier that these images are produced by AI. There is a chip in the ball that senses when it is kicked, and the AI sees/knows/calculates where all the players are and renders those images within 2 seconds.
Nobody places the line, nobody creates it, the AI does all that.
The human just decides if the offside players are interfering with play.

Well, it's about f***ing time! I've been banging on about this ever since VAR came in.

Wow. That's some serious AI, and presumably requires a serious network of cameras. Can that be retrofitted to PL stadiums?

Fair enough. If the tech is there, and if it can make the absolute part of the decision quickly, it should be used. Of course, there'll still be the human element in deciding whether an offside attacker player is interfering with play, but hopefully it'd prevent the horrendous "clear and obvious" issues that take 5 minutes to work out.

I've not actually watched any of this World Cup live yet so I've not seen how it's working in-game.

Apparently he asked to come off yesterday. Sounds like he is still not right and playing with that injury

i am getting worried that we bought a sicknote in romero. managed the injuries well during the loan period however all came to the fore after we signed him.

He is a sick note. I would be very wary of signing an argie now.

But but but the experts on here said he was saving himself for the WC and should have played in our league games, as he wasn't injured?
You really think he played injured?
Looked to me like the Argentina defence was poor when run at
Nothing about fitness but everything about having some players who aren’t as good as the hype

I think the 'lack of match fitness' concept is at play here. Wish he'd had a chance to play before the tournament started...

Agreed. I think he's great front-foot aggressive defender who will be excellent for us as the years go on. For me, he is not quite the finished article yet. I finally got to watch the game again (missed it live) and I think he simply wasn't match-fit. Physically he looked OK. I still think he'd have been better off getting some minutes before Qatar, but hey, what do I know?! :D

I agree
If he hadn’t been saving himself just in case he may have been able to get a game or 2 in and we can see what 60 mins vs Leeds did for Richarlison tonight

^ expert.

I don’t have blinkers on because a player plays for us
He played because he was fit enough to play
They lost because they played a team that worked harder than them, didn’t score offside goals and run at a defence that couldn’t turn. He played in that defence
The guys a quality player when he wants to be but like all Argentina players right now it’s all about them be8ng the support act to messi and they all want in on it.
brazil showed tonight that having players who carried on playing or who got minutes in before the World Cup, they looked better as the game went on…. The exact opposite of Argentina

But he wasn't fit enough to play the warm up game. He was injured a month ago. Like richarlison he could have come back before and played for us if he was fit. Got a bit of match fitness before the world cup. But you believe he purposefully didn't.

Yes he fudged us over during covid, yes lo celso used to be injured a lot and seemed to be fit for internationals (is he still faking). I think that has clouded your judgement.
