Coronavirus

If I was Keir Starmer, tomorrow, a few hours before the vote, I would declare Labour's support for Plan B restrictions conditional on Johnson's immediate resignation. Restriction in exchange for a more responsible government. That would be a great grinnade to throw

4,713 confirmed cases of Omicron in the UK, but estimates that the current rate of daily infections are around 200,000.

So more than 98% of infections are asymptomatic then?!

Isn’t it more to do with the fact that only a certain percentage of tests are sequenced to see if they’re omicron?

That doesn’t mean all those in the extrapolated number are asymptomatic. Some will be, or even a majority, but not all - right?

The fact is that Johnson and his whole government fudged it as far back as Jan-Feb 2020 when they could see what was happening in Wuhan and later in Italy, and they’ve been chasing their tails ever since.

Late, and then necessarily longer lockdowns all because they acted too late.

1/3 are sequenced so that doesn't make anywhere near that much difference

There's actually speculation that Javid got the decimal point wrong and that he meant 20k, but I guess it doesn't suit the fear campaign to correct that

Thought you were going to say in return for him fcuking a pig on live TV.

I've been waiting and waiting to get a text from my local GP surgery to go and get my booster.
Day after day, no news.
I called them earlier and their answerphone said they are no longer taking part in the COVID vaccination program.

Erm...what? Is that even possible now?!

So I have been trying this website to get an appointment and it has been failing and crashing all day. Marvellous.

Don’t worry - 29 million people are going to be boosted in the next 17 days, so there must be a plan.

We just need the PM to find that envelope he scribbled it down on.

Tobias ellwood mp on r4 just now, voting against passports because there's no evidence they work. What we need to be doing is getting ready to give jag 4,5 & 6.
WTAF.

It's ridiculous that no one in government seems to ask the "what will happen if..." question.
"What will happen if we announce that everyone over 18 can get a booster?" = lots of people will try to book said booster on the NHS website.
"What will happen if we announce no isolation for covid-contacts, but take daily LFTs instead?" = lots of people will try to order said LFTs on the NHS website.
"What will happen if we make both of the above effective around the same time?" = lots and lots of people hitting the NHS website at the same time.

Either do the work before the announcement(s) to ensure the increased capacity can be handled, or just say "in preparation for these changes which will come into effect on xxxday, the NHS website will be unavailable between the hours of xxxx and xxxx whilst upgrade work takes place."
Or in the case of LFTs, let's check that our delivery partner(s) can handle the extra demand, before we create chaos.

Don't be silly they are a bunch of helmets

Raab saying 250 in hospital from Omicron when in fact it's 9
Good to see the facts getting in the way of the Tories lies and misinformation

You would think in a pandemic it would be important for the government to get these stats correct. Instead its like Diane Abacus

The first big set of data has just come out of South Africa@

- Omicron 29% is milder in unvaxed compared to Wuhan
- two doses of vax is 30% effective at reducing transmission (Delta 80%)
- two doses of vax is 70% effective at reducing hospitalisation (Delta 93%)

Can't work out if that is good news or bad...it's a lot of data!

From that final stat you quote - two doses of vax is 70% effective at reducing hospitalisation (Delta 93%) - it seems boosters will be vital in ensuring that the NHS isn't overwhelmed?

I think it's pretty much confirming what had been assumed: everyone will get it, it will be significantly milder than previous strains, the net effect on intensive care hospitalisations and deaths compared to Delta could go either way.

So two jabs even if you had your second jab is useless against this new strain and you will only be covered by the third jab. Oh happy days
