Coronavirus

Almost exactly one year late with the restrictions on entering the UK.

World beating indeed.

Also, “We always knew we were going to have a particularly difficult time now,” from the man who said we’d “send the virus packing” in 12 weeks, and then followed that by promising normality by Christmas.

Cases are flattening/decreasing. The peak for deaths is probably 2 weeks away unfortunately. After that we will see the impact of current restrictions and the vaccine come in to play. Realistically we won't start to see positive news for a month yet.

And every avoidable death is an absolute tragedy unless you think like ISIS.

You have to admit that the vaccination program is being done so well. They have done well and we are going to come out sooner than we might have. It doesn't mean the post mortem of this won't be terrifying. The impact will be felt for the rest of this decade purely down to how badly this was handled in our country.

I was looking at the figures earlier and the increase this week has been really impressive. Hopefully, this means that we're on track to hit 2m next week.

My mum missed her jab (too poorly) and called yesterday to rebook- did so without problem but it’s a few weeks away.

To my mind that appears like it is really well organised- that they knew when a dose will be available, where, and how to prioritise it.

Is that through her GP?

You know I’m not sure, but as far as I understand it , the missed appointment was with the local gp whereas the new one (I believe) was via some centralised call centre and she’ll be going to the hub at Epsom racetrack. I’ll find out for sure tmw if you need to know.

I don't need to know, just interested

It does look good so far.

The in-laws (both 80+ and live in Yorkshire) hadn’t heard anything by yesterday. They telephoned their surgery and were told that if they could make it to the vaccination centre 15 miles away then they’d be given their dose. They drove through the snow and were done - they said that the vaccination hub was really well organised.

Lots of 80+ people in our village have been jabbed, and my uncle in N Ireland was also done yesterday.

So it seems to be working as it should across the country.

TBF it’s the minimum they should achieve
But the knock on, on other parts of the health’s sector now is gonna be massive

my wife runs the mental health team across beds for early intervention. They are losing all their nurses now to back fill in hospitals, where staff have caught COVID. That means that no one is getting community treatment and the amount of this across all issues is gonna be mega (in a bad way)

I am not ready to breathe a sigh of relief just yet.

That’s really sad mate.

It’s horrendous
It is what it is and people will get vaccinated but it means so many other issues will materialise
My wife’s team and now on 7 day working because they know the volume is gonna be so big with all the Covid cases affecting people in hospital

We are definitely going to see years of medical knock on effects globally.

With mental health we are already seeing a drive to promote it and a big improvement in self guided help - hopefully self guided will help a significant number of people and reduce the impact.
And employers can help with Mental Health First Aiders and private providers that offer similar services (online resources).

Hopefully.

I know this is not over yer. But I have to say thank you to everyone on this board for helping me stay just the right side of madness through all this. My family have been magnificent but you lot have given me an outlet for my anger and frustration. So thank you all and hope I haven't been too unkind.
