Christian Eriksen

I thought he was poor earlier in the season, but came good around December. I tell ya, someone has been in Eriksen's ear. Have you seen all the tackles he has been putting in of late?[
There actually was a tackle (one of the two last games, can't remember) where he not only fouled the opponent, but was arguing with the ref after, quite fired up ... gave me a bit of a laugh after all the brick I've heard people say about him ...

I think that it is common mistake for people to write players off based on a poor patch of form.

You see pundits doing this all the time. A player (or a team) in bad form over 3-4 matches? They're the bricktiest players on the planet, can't kick a ball, has a bad attitude, something's not right etc etc. Then if you get a player who's coming good for 3-4 matches (Zaha now, for example), he's the next coming, everyone will want to buy him in the summer etc.

Not specifically saying Zaha is an overrated player at all, by the way, just using him as an example of a player who's been average for years, and who is now all of a sudden the hottest brick around.

I can't remember anybody wanted him out, though I remember a few wanted him to be placed on the bench, due to lack of form/workload. But that isn't the same thing as wanted him out.

I believe you are trying to re-write the history here.

I was one of these people...benched that is, def NOT out. I'd lost count of the times he'd pulled out of tackles or went missing. Very happy to see that he's been putting himself about and creating so many chances for the team for last few months. He's definitely a confidence player, and he has that in abundance right now.

For me, it looked as if the turning point was Chelsea away. He hit that goal so sweetly, and despite the loss he seemed to hit a real run of form after that.

look at the difference now.
gave me a bit of a laugh after all I've heard about people rejecting the brick about him earlier in the season.

I am with you mate. He was poor earlier in the season even though many on here refused to acknowledge it, more recently he has looks superb

Indeed, i wonder if there are still some who think he is a pussy?

I think someone on the coaching staff has had a word in his ear, because there has been a definite change in his intent regarding tackling in the last half a dozen games. Have I ever said he is a poor player, have I ever said I want him out? No, but I have accused him of being soft, which is fair criticism, given his embarrassing efforts at getting to contested ball and heading challenges. Also, this is reinforced by the fact that now he is doing these things, which belied the idea that he was in some way incapable of doing them. And guess what? He is now an more effective player.

I would argue that his increased effectiveness is more to do with his improved use of the ball rather than anything he adds defensively. Yes it is good that he is competing a bit more on that side of things but its importance is overstated.

We've scored goals and created chances directly from him winning the type of challenges people were complaining about him ducking out of before - it's an important part of our game and personally I think it's great to see him improving in this area

Below is a sample of the comments in this thread alone from five different posters last Autumn. All of whom expressed a desire either directly or obliquely to see him replaced, although tbf some have since either backtracked to varying extents or just gone very quiet.

I am willing to place a bet with you that the moment an upgrade can be found we will sell him. People bitched about Modric during his 'contract impasse' but he never let it show on the pitch. He needs to start delivering, but more importantly, he has to show COURAGE. For me he bottled it a few times today. I am not referring to the physical side of his game, I am referring to taking a few more chances/showing greater intent when he is on the ball. One moment screamed to me - he received the ball across him from right after about 75 mins, he took a touch to the left to get across the man and instead of then driving in behind and either drawing the foul or taking a pop, he simply laid off a short ball with no option for an incisive return. Again, I appreciate he was not the only one today, but every other player 'wanted' it, and to me, he looks scared and low on confidence. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I want him to rise, start taking games/trying to take them, and prove me wrong!

Right, knee-jerk time perhaps, but i don't think it is.

This lad has tinkled me off today beyond belief!!! We might as well have played with 10-men today, he did fudge all!! Walking around, not closing down. When the ball came near him he did his usual act of pussying out of it. Dangling a foot in and hoping for the best. When he did win the ball it was more luck than a tough tackle.
I don't care if he "isn't a tackling kind of player", it's a basic part of the game, even more so when we're playing a team who matched us for intensity.
Even Rose was caught on camera telling him to get in the and win it.

And when he did get the ball - what did he offer?? Where was the unlocking pass? Where was the creativity? No link up play (that seemed left to Dembele).
He looked totally lost out there and why Poch left him on the pitch was a mystery.

IMO the fans have been patient enough with him. Games like this are not made for him and he doesn't have a bit of impact. Poch should've left him for Anfield.
I saw the article that said he was one of the most overrated Prem players...i'm beginning, sadly, to agree with it.

He's a talented player no doubt, but right now, he's a complete passenger in a team pressing hard everywhere else!

Interesting the Isco noise has picked up again. Would be a very direct replacement for Eriksen

Hopefully the extra 2 years will keep him in the £25m bracket when we sell him to Italy next summer.

How much money is burning a whole in Juve's pockets from Pogba still?

I think we can find a better use for those wages.

He just doesn't have the mentality to be a big player

I liked the look of Bernardo Silva last night. Perhaps a potential future upgrade on Eriksen? Much busier and more pro-active than Eriksen.

Buying Isco or Bernardo Silva in January and flogging Eriksen to China is the kick up the arse he needs.

It might be his only option. The European club that can afford his wages know he's not a big game player/not got the mentality, and going somewhere like France, Holland or Portugal would not be possible because of his wages

He needs to keep Lamela company on the bench. In fact, I would shop him around in January and see if we can get a decent price for him, to subsidise a better option, Lamela too if we can get a goal scorer in. I don't rate either of them.

i don't think this league suits him, and i think he realises it and shows it during his play.
not sure if benching him would be any good....

I think it is great too but my point was that eriksen's superb current form has little to do with him challenging for the ball more frequently. There may be one or two instances you could point to where we have directly benefited, but it's his use of the ball that is the real improvement area. The tackling or lack thereof makes a relatively small contribution to his overall effectiveness.

Opinions but some not very clever

At the top end it's the little improvements which can tip the balance

Without a doubt, but it suits some to say that he has added it to his game. They are trying to explain their WRONG opinions of him that they voiced on here repeatedly earlier this season. He is the same player who for whatever reason some slagged off.
