Christian Eriksen

But he's lazy, won't go into crunching tackles, doesn't win headers, always last up to the bar and never rings his mum.

You might take the mick, because across a whole season, his shirking of the physical stuff may not count too much BUT...in a big final like an FA Cup it might easily be the difference between us winning and losing.

Then again his ability to create assists is more likely to (a) help get us to the final in the first place and then (b) help us win it.

Besides I just don't buy into this notion that his lack of physicality in the tackle is costing us. I concede it looks awful when he ducks out of it but how many times can you point to an occasion when we have directly conceded as a result? It's not as though he's built like a tank so the chances are he'd come off worst most times anyway.

At the end of the day he is an attacking mid whose chasing, pressing and general harrying of the opposition helps win us back possession far more than the odd occasion when he holds back from steaming in.

In any game any one attribute or lack of attribute might be decisive. And over a season that may or may not make a big impact.

In a one off cup final it's just as likely that Alli's temper, Wanyama's lack of passing tempo, Lloris' average at best distribution or Dembele's running into trouble will cost us as Eriksen's not crashing into tackles.

Overall though Eriksen is much more likely to make a positive impact in a one off game than he is to make a negative one. And over a season that shows up too.

Again, give Eriksen the right service. Give him the ball in the final third with a bit of time and space and he will deliver. He's showing this game after game after game.

It's a shame that there is a british attitude to midfield players a very average player like Bryan Robson was Captain Fantastic yet true class players like Hoddle and Hudson were seen as lightweight and didn't run around like headless chicken kicking people and getting injured. Eriksen is an essential part of how we play and yes when he's not on his game we suffer but without him we would be a mid table team. It the way he keeps the team and the ball moving that most impressive and in a team where we don't have many creative players he's almost impossible to replace.

It's not a one or the other argument though is it. What does a lack pf physical courage have to do with having an ability to pick a pass or make a cross?

Nobody has made that point, this is something that pro Eriksen posters have invented. Nobody expects him to steam in mindlessly like some sort of midget Charlie Adam. What his critics don't like is his pulling up short when a 50/50 balls comes up, or even worse pulling out of heading challenges. In saying all this I have to admit, he hasn't been quite so bad in this respect over the last few weeks.

It's been ruining the English game for decades.

Thank you for that acknowledgement, while I get the 50/50 criticism whatever side of the fence you are on, I disagree that Eriksen "never" goes in or puts his body on the line.

I actually think he's naturally not that type of player, and when he comes back from injury it is highlighted/worse, but at several times this season and recently he has gone in for tackles/interceptions that either saved us or led to a goal opportunity.

It's perhaps not a one or the other argument, but finding players without weaknesses is pretty difficult. You've identified one weakness Eriksen has, but most players we could sign with more physical courage would have other weaknesses where Eriksen has strengths.

We're not currently in a situation where we're short on physical courage in our team.

Look at the list of the Premier League’s top five chance creators since the start of last season. Mesut Ozil, who cost £42.5m and is subject to negotiations over an increase to his £140,000-a-week wage. Alexis Sanchez, who cost £35m and shares a contract stand-off with Ozil. Dimitri Payet, who signed a new deal at West Ham worth £125,000 a week and was sold for £25m at the age of 29. Kevin de Bruyne, bought for £55m and paid £150,000 a week.

And then there is Eriksen. Since the beginning of last season, only two Premier League players have created more chances and none have as many assists. He has also scored 38 goals in three-and-a-half seasons since joining Spurs, more than Juan Mata over the same time period.

More impressively, Eriksen’s total of 34 league goals and assists combined since the start of 2015/16 cannot be bettered by any other Premier League midfielder; not Ozil, not De Bruyne and not Eden Hazard. Eriksen is also younger than all three of those players.

There you go!

If this thread reaches 200 pages, can we all agree Eriksen is a great player and a fantastic asset to the club?
Let me say it like this: I took my Dad to the Gent and Stoke game. He does not follow Spurs, but is just a fan of football that has been watching football for 60 years, so he's completely unbiased. During the Stoke game he said to me;
"Christan Eriksen is some player! He's about as good as it gets. Hope you can keep him at the club, because he's something special"

We'll need to win the FA Cup first. It's @Gilzeantoscore 's last stand!

Very good post and sums it up, i have never seen a player who does not have ( so called ) faults in his game and we have a team full of them ( like all other teams do). But for some reason the (so called) faults that Eriksen has is brought up all the time. Makes no sense to me at all.
