Wow. Not very surprised at the outcome, but that's quite shocking - in what way is it the council's job to spend taxpayer money to make sure local families (aka voters) can't stand up for their rights?

Depends what you measure market value at.

Normal market value for the land is probably what they're paying, it could be argued that the legal issues massively increase the cost of an arm's length transaction. I don't believe any legal proceedings were started though, so it would be tough to measure the actual value of that.
