I don't really keep tabs on it week in week out but i loosely follow FC Schalke 04 and thought id start a thread dedicated to the Bundesliga.

This year has probably the closest contest in the whole of europe, with the top 3 sitting on 40 points each 19 games in and 4th on 36pts... Literally anyones league at the moment. Never seen a top 4 so close in any league this late in the season. FC Schalke currently sitting 3rd below their rivals Dortmund and league leaders Bayern Munich.
 
Bundesliga is my favourite league to watch, brilliantly exciting teams and it's always entertaining and close.

so why bother supporting spurs, if they play in a league thats less exciting to watch?

how can it be so good, when Spurs don't play in it?

I lived in Germany foer 10 years, and couldn't give a fudge about it, despite having actually attended bundesliga games

how many have you been to?

Because I was born in London and fell in love with Tottenham's history, style of football and the club overall. Am I not allowed to support Tottenham for thinking the Bundesliga is an exciting league?

I think El Classico is good but Spurs don't play in that neither, what's your point?

I haven't been to any games, I haven't been to Germany, but I watch it every week.
 
Hunterlaar is having a brilliant season, having sparked alongside Raul - hence Schalke's title-challenging form. They've looked very balanced this year, albeit Neuer's loss.

Bayern lost a bit of form during Schweinsteiger's earlier collar-bone/shoulder injury and not might have dropped a bit of their momentum. Gomez is another striker who's suddenly found a rich vein of from and can't stop scoring

Impossible to call at this stage, imho
 
I'd be keen to get in to watching Bundesliga but are many games broadcast with English commentary? I dislike watching games in a foreign language

Also those who watch, any pacey wingers there who should be on Spurs' radar?
 
Cue inevitable calls for Marko Marin again!

As for the league Schalke will blow it as always. Having said that I saw the match where they destroyed Werder Bremen 5-0and they looked very impressive.

Dortmund have been amazingly consistent since last season, two in a row is not out of the question?

Its a question born of curiousity, it intrigues me to try to understand the mindset of someone who has absolutely no ties to Germany, any German teams and thinks its the best league ever - why you support Spurs?

I'm relatively simplistic about my football, and my loyalties are to the club I support, in the same way that my love for my wife is based on loyalty and fidelity. I see no reason to waste my time with allegiances or interest in a league outside of my own country (apart from passing interest in something special happening)

So my point is, you are either supporting the wrong club in the wrong league, or you are talking tosh and are a football kitten who might as well support Emirates Marketing Project or Barcelona. I'm not saying you are wrong - just that your views, if they are what I believe them to be from what I read (and I assume you wrote it) are just totally divergeant fom mine.

I'm expressing my opinion, not criticising you personally, sharing views etc.

surely if its a German league match with an English commentary, it would be being broadcast in a foreign language.
 
ive supported Spurs for over 20 years, but also watch a lot of football from other countries/leagues, and in the past 5 years or so id have to say that I enjoyed watching the Bundesliga games far more than Premier League games(those not involving Spurs)

in terms of pure footballing enjoyment, id rank Bundesliga 1st, Premier League 2nd, La Liga 3rd, Ligue 1 4th

I would understand your point more if you had grown up in India.
Having grown up with English football I would have expected you to have a greater sense of identity - maybe thats the issue? Only you can answere that.

To me any league that doesn't have Spurs competing in it, is of secondary interest, because, personally,the passion of who I support is paramount. I can enjoy watching games that aren't Spurs or England, but I can't engage or truly care about them. Without the commitment and passion, the game goes down a few rungs.

If India competed at football on a global level, who would your heart want to win, if they played England at Wembley in a world cup game?

haha the Tebbit test

for me its England all the time in any form of sport, not just football

and i dont see how identity can matter now when so many English clubs are owned by foreign owners and clubs employ so many foreign players. Where or what is the English identity in the Premier League?

Its a relevant question, as not everyone does embrace that ethos.

Identity does matter to me, but then its ingrained in me, no matter that I have spent 40% of my life living outside the UK, UK and England specifically, is my home.
Spurs are my club and the EPL is the only footballing competition that has any appeal or interest to me.
Your assertion that the Bundesliga is intrinsically better, is (IMO) flawed anyway, as I bet you rarely watch the gash matches - and you have to look at the competition as a whole to make that decision. Having watched Arminia Bielefeld in the height of Germany's global football dominance in the 70's, I can tell you that the bottom end of the Bundesliga is a pretty poor standard.

The identity of the league is the fact that you support the club, not who owns it. You live for the team, not the birthplace of the people in the shirts - and thats why I don't understand so called supporters of British clubs, showing any profound interest outside of their own league - if your team doesn't play in it, where's the interest - beyond that of an academic one in the way the game is played?

I on the other hand have become sick and tired of it. Time for a new tune.

As for the Bundesliga, it is refreshing to see such a competitive league especially in contrast to Spain. The cheap ticket prices, quality stadiums and good technique are the selling points to me.

Perhaps it goes with the whole Arab takeover - definitlely some oriential reefs in there. Before I knew it was Kasabian, always thought it's something from Buddha Bar or similar - i.e. zero connection to the PL

i said that from an enjoyment point of view I prefer watching Bundesliga games. It has the intensity/pace of Premier League games, but with more technical skill imv. Plus as i pointed out, Ive made this choice based over the last 5 or so seasons where i feel the standard of the Premier League as a whole has diminished. In the future maybe the Premier League will improve its offerings and then i might make a different assessment.

Football is something to be enjoyed after all, i dont see the point in sitting through bad games just because i have to be loyal to the league in the country i was born in. Its an entertainment business, players are paid millions to get results but to entertain along the way so apart from being loyal to my team and i dont see why i should blindly be loyal to the league as a whole. For example if im watching Everton versus Fulham, i want to be entertained, i have no allegiance to either team so the standard of football is all i care about. If the standard is poor, then i think its natural to look around elsewhere and see if there is something more pleasing on the eye in other leagues.

if football clubs take a global view on searching for talent, then its only natural that football fans to also widen their knowledge and appreciation of teams and leagues around the world

about watching the gash matches, well
