Brennan Johnson

Those claiming the fee mentioned represents a significant loss for us are wrong. He signed in 2023 for 45-50m on a 5 year contract. That means that his book value at the start of this season was 30-32m. Selling him for 35m will represent an accountable profit. Plus he scored the winning goal in a European final, with the added value of that. We certainly aren't in the red with him!

It's a loss in player trading terms.

But it's a business, and in business and accounting it's not.
Of course it would be better if we got 150m, but you ain't going to get that from a player who is now just a squad option.
He was perfect for Ange, but isn't good enough all round player.
But I'm pretty sure he'll be useful for Palace.

Personally I think this is a mistake and when he's banging them in for someone else we'll regret it.
Should he go will we then have sold our last three top scorer for the preceding season, kane, son and BJ?
Someone at the club does realise that the point is to score goals, don't they?

The problem is (and sorry if this has been covered) that we spent a lot of money buying a first choice in Johnson’s best position - so the seeds were sowed then.

He’s proven he’s no real use on the left. But he hasn’t been tried down the middle - so there’s an argument to say it would cost more than £35m to sign a 24 year old tap in merchant* who can play in a front 2.

*I actually think it’s an under appreciated skill to get in between the posts so regularly. Many other forwards in our ranks seem to struggle with it!

We don't need a central tap in merchant that plays best in a front 2 system that we don't even play and are unlikely to play.

Take the money and run.

The more we lose on players the less we have to spend. At the end of the day our business is winning football games. I couldn't care less if we make a profit on the financial reports.

We want to have the ability to play various styles and formations, and in order to do that we need to have players who can play different positions and ways.

Johnson is absolutely not that sort of forward, and he will ultimately not fit our setup.

We know that our front line needs to be revamped and while I wouldn't start with Johnson in an ideal world, the squad is full and we need to rotate players out for better and more suited ones to the managers vision.

He's a legend for what he did in Bilbao but anyone who says he's critical to our future is overlooking the one dimensional nature of his play. If he stays he's a squad or impact player, but if he goes I wish him well.

I have always wanted to see if he could learn/play a 'second striker' role off the CF. Ghost runner through the channels. I suppose that would require a passer and a style we are not interested in...

That would require 2 up top though wouldn't it and that means 3-5-2 I suspect?

That, or 4-4-1-1 or ol’ fashioned 4-4-2…I think our best use of Muani/Richy is in a 4-4-1-1 with Muani as the ‘shoulder’ striker operating between the 10 and 9…I always thought Johnson could play that ‘Dele’ off the shoulder role as an option, but given that successive managers have not tried it, I must be seeing things which don’t exist?

People seem to forget that he backs out of challenges, slows down when it looks like a defender may get there at the same times as him and ultimately gets marked / bullied out of the game and is happy standing next to the defender for an excuse to hide. I’m sure if he plays in a team that are going to soak up pressure and play those timed through balls behind the defenders for him to run onto he will be useful, but he isn’t what we need.

We have to sell to buy, at the very least from a squad size/registration perspective. Never hurts to get money in either of course.

He's not first choice and someone we can seemingly get a good fee for. The players we can't imo sell willingly are our starters/best players and our younger players with big potential. We have a few in both of those categories.

He has some real strengths that will be missed, but that's mostly true of most players we could sell that will bring in a decent fee and clear up a squad space for a new signing.

Redlands treatment on Bale was needed on him, let him get booted into the air in training

He's a player very much of another era in my eyes. In so much as you can't carry players anymore in the hope that they will provide a game changing moment. As I've said before Muller is the only player who's managed longevity in that Raumdeuter role, and he is a much better all round player then Johnson. Even Alli had more to his game and he wasn't able to sustain a top level career.

I think he's been a top level pro long enough to have added more to his game, but he hasn't.
