Brennan Johnson

Must be gutted to not even get a minute in the Super Cup his goal qualified us for, considering how far away from match sharpness Solanke was and that Tel got the nod on his “wrong” side.
I found that strange too. Kudus was very good so I think he will be the starter on the RW, but to not even give Johnson at least 30 minutes was a travesty. We just stopped playing football after some of the subs we made.

I agree, he gets a lot of stick from some fans [ i know its all about op inions] but i do believe he was our top scorer last season.

I think there's a danger of reading too much into this. This was an isolated game, quite unique in terms of opposition and we were throwing more and more long balls forward as the game went on.

It made sense to have Tel up there rather than Johnson (or Odobert) as Tel with his physical attributes has a better chance of doing something with the he ball than either of those two....

We also take into account the conditions and that we have a game on Saturday, maybe Johnson and Odobert were being kept fresh for that game.

Have you actually watched Johnson? It was a physical game and he backs out of 50/50 challenges and doesn’t take on his man. He would have just stood there not doing a lot if he had come on.

Fantastic finish

Ole ole ole…
Found myself thinking "oh yeah, he's gonna score" well before the finish. He's so good in those situations.

Bit of a classic game for him. But doing much, not that involved, but playing alright I guess. One moment, boom goal. Done.

I really do get the criticism of his overall play, but scoring goals in football is kinda good.

We need better.

His ability to sniff out chances is a valuable asset but nah we need better than this. We can't get away with carrying a player in the tougher matches that are to come.

Issue is
You replace him with a Savio and you lose 18 goals
But you may gain 10 assist
The goals IMO are being massively undervalued
Goals are cool but his bon presence in games is more of the issue. Against a lot of teams we will suffer because we are essentially playing with 10 men as we saw MANY time last season and at those times the goals he does score don't compensate for the lack of attacking balance and quality of possession that the team has whenever he plays.

Not to diminish his goal today but it's the 3rd in a 3 nil win, but in the first half when when we needed a 2nd goal Johnson had 0 contribution, not even that His was poor His might as well not have been on the pitch for all effect he had, His use is so narrow and ultimately too limited for me.

Kudus didn't score today but he created both goals, without that creation we don't score either and Johnson isn't a goal that isn't going to ever create for others. He's completely reliant on the work of others to then do the beat finish.

I don't think it is zero contribution but something is broken. I feel like Johnson works his socks off but just doesn't know how to be relevant. He had only 27 touches in 80 mins on the pitch today. Richi had 23 touches in 73 mins but nobody is slating his contribution. It's about the same rate against relegation fodder. It's a shame fans don't have access to the running stats as I expect Johnson probably runs and runs in this setup.

As another benchmark, Kudus had 46 touches in 87 mins. This is perhaps a data point how much more relevant he is going to be at this club.

Our club is lacking natural lefties to be fair. Johnson could have easily had less touches as the system isn't setup on the left as well as the Porro / Kudus partnership with Sarr or Bergval on their inside. We need to keep trying to get something working on our left side. It's not just down to one player.

To get in to positions to, and then be able to consistently take the opportunity to score is a extremely rare trait that you are massively underestimating

Johnson is not strong left side
Even less so when we have two right footers there in him and Spence
But what was worrying for both him and Spence was how many risks they had space and we went right
Now I get the penchants of players to go to what we they know we will have an impact Kudus … but if you don’t spread play you limit options
Brennan had one big of play where he went backwards there than beat walker… 30 seconds later he found Richy and it was a great save then cleared by a defender
Earlier he bullied walker in 80/20 in walkers favour which we have never seen before
I’d rather have a player have an impact on the result that one who may do “prettier things” but actually have no impact
It’s like when goalies have nothing to do but make that one save at the end … it’s what matters
Brennan for me is a weak link because of his game play but I still think part lf that is the lack of passing to him in the right way

He has frequently scored the first or even the winner
You know that
Kudus is class
I banged that drum 3 years ago
You need a balance
That balance doesn’t really come with a 3 man midfield and no one Really there as a passer or … as we saw today 2 right footers on the left
What’s key is Frank is trying to work out how to use him and his goal return merits that.
It’s ultimately what wins you the games
