Ben Davies

I've said before that he uses the ball better then any of our defenders including Romero. He passes it faster and more direct which changes the impetuous of our attacks. Romero can pick and pass but negates that with the the point, point walk routine that he favours. Davies takes a touch then pings it, he also clips it down the line which nobody else does for some reason.

If we had proper reserve football he would be great to play in that helping the youngsters, back in the day Ron Henry played well into his 30's as centreback to help in the massive tactical change in formations that took place in the 60's.
As captain of Wales he may just decide to go somewhere where he plays more first team football

We need to sign a new centre half, but there is still a question as to whether we let him go in the summer or we give him one more year. He will only be 32 at the end of the season.

I'd be more confident with Davies as 4th choice CB (or 2nd choice LCB rather) next season than any of the youngsters we have out on loan

I have always said i think he has been slagged off by a lot of our fans over the years unfairly. He is a good leader on the pitch and never seems to get himself in a flap like some of our other defenders. We could not really have a back up player any better then he is who will do such a good job.
I think we could have a better backup, but I also think that would probably cost quite a lot of money that is better spent elsewhere and lead to players being unhappy about a lack of game time.

Like you I think he's been underrated.

I don't think we could get/have a better back up at all. You need a solid experienced pro as one of your backup CBs, you aren't going to find any young CBs happy at not getting that much game time, and then when they are called on consistently putting in the performances he does. And also able to cover LB albeit not the dynamic type that Ange ideally wants but can doubtlessly put in a shift there....

Let's hope Davies and Dragusin stay fit as we have plenty of games coming up between now and Christmas and clearly don't want to rush VDV back until we are sure he's ready. I wonder if they will both start against Roma to work on their partnership or if we will be too worried about Fulham next weekend. Doesn't feel like we have much choice does it?

We were in the same predicament last EL game, and played them.

I don't think we could do much better. And what he does offer for sure gives us a lot. I've been fairly consistent in saying that he's been underrated by many. For me more of a clarifying point that I think we could sign a better player if we prioritised that position/role. But I think it's been a good decision that it hasn't been a priority.

Think we will again.

Ironically I don't think we'd be in a much different spot with Rodon in the squad compared to and instead of Dragu. Probably even slightly better given the often very good performance the Rodon/Davies combo have put in for Wales

I've always thought of him as our Denis Irwin.

A couple of thoughts here.

First, I would ask everyone to think about how many games in a career spanning a decade and over 300 games has Ben played as a LCB in a back four? The answer is probably those 10-12 games he filled in last season, the handful this season and just some fill in sub appearances on the odd occasion in his career. So probably 20 or less. It is a specialist role and very different from LCB in a back 3 with wing backs that he's played for Conte and Wales. It's very different from sitting tight alongside someone like Vertonghen as a defensive minded LB as well. So kudos to Ben and Ange for the hard work that has been put in to allow Ben to excel in this position. He wasn't great at it last season and it feels like he's grown into the new position quite quickly. I mention Ange because it sounds like he isn't expecting Ben to be like-for-like with VDV.

Secondly, I don't think Ben is the answer but is buying us some time. When I looked recently, most top PL clubs operate with 5 centre halved in their squads. Only us and Liverpool have 4 which leaves us vulnerable. Someone said it above, but if Ben does stay on and share 4th place duties with one of the young guns then only he can decide whether that is right for his career. He's mostly now Wales captain and needs to be playing through WC qualification and hopefully the finals themselves in the summer of 2026. I wouldn't stay at Spurs if I were him.

Also, forget MOTD. Finish your playing career away and come back to Spurs. Ben can be anything from a coach, 1st team manager right up to Scott Munn's job in the future.
