Re: Official - Townsend
And what did he do in order to get selected for those two good games for England?
The same sort of thing Ricky Lambert did, presumably. Maybe we could sign him?
Occasionally players hit a purple patch and are rewarded with a chance in the national team. Townsend had played well for QPR, got his chance and played well in one game and ok in another. From that point on, the press went wild (as is their way) suggesting Townsend was the next big thing.
My view is that a lot of people at the Club were taken-in by the hype at that stage. Sure, everyone would have loved it if Andros had stepped in where Bale had left and filled the void, but in reality that was never going to happen.
For me, he lacks end product. He runs down blind alleys and, due to the fact that last season he hit a few long range wonder goals, he shoots far, far too often and rarely with any reward. He is, in my opinion (and whilst i am no better off in my view than others, i have at least been watching spurs for 30 years) he is a squad player for 6th to 9th placed premiership team or a first choice player in a bottom half team.
I always apply what i accept is a pretty crude test: which of the teams above us would have him in a squad of their best 22? I don't think it is controversial to say that none of the present top 4 would have him, and given we are trying to get into that top four, that is unlikely to happen if we are reliant on players in key positions who are less able than those in the same positions of the teams we are trying to catch.
I would say precisely the same about Rose.
