Andre Gomes

Spanish football has been uninteresting over the last two or three seasons.
He looks OK.
Price?

In the summer it was reportedly £40m. Probably less now after 6 months picking up splinters. They paid £30m for him 18 months ago, so you'd imagine wouldn't want to lose on that.

In the summer it was supposed to be a loan with purchase option. That might suit us again - gives us 6 months to assess him, and the fee then can be offset by selling Janssen, Sissoko and Nkoudou (none of whom will go this window).

It could all obviously be BS, however I remember him at Valencia before his big move to Barca. Has a great range of passing, can dribble shoot and has energy. Would play in the Dembele role in games we expect to win, especially at home, or alternatively further forward. Career stalled at Barca - needs to re-emerge from the shadows of Messi, Suarez etc. I think this is the montage I found and posted elswhere:
His role in Barcelona is completely different to what he did at Valencia. In the Barca team plays a lot deeper, almost like a DM, whereas in Valencia he was more a typical CM/AM and was much more offensive and involved. That is the role that suits him best imo.

I agree - at Barca the midfield is a bit of a side-show. They get the ball to Messi and Suarez asap and let them do their thing. I think if he went back to a team where he was more pivotal, you'd get the Valencia version of him back, which would be hugely additive to us

I'm not sure about that

Comment was a bit tongue in cheek but what I meant was that the Barca midfield is meant to retain, circulate the ball and get it to the front guys - they dont really run with it that much or take players on. The forwards are the star of the show. Rakatic has taken a much more back-seat/support role than he had at Valencia where he drove the team more, and Gomes is similar (when he actually get on to the pitch)

Yet they have just paid £140 million for Coutinho?

There are links around saying he wants to snub the Goons for us, say it ain't so, He is not an upgrade on anything we have

Depends on your view on whether he play in the Dembele position in the PL and also whether you're talking at the Gomes from his Valencia days or the Gomes from his sitting-on-the-bench Barca days.

Dembele is leaving so we need a replacement. I think Gomes is quality - he'd give us more than Dembele in terms of forward passes, but would be less strong than Dembele (who isn't though?). He's 6 foot 2' so plenty big enough...and Modric showed you don't need to be a giant to play CM in the PL

Whilst i haven't seen much of him beyond YT i have read a lot of discussion on him and it leaves me incredibly cold - hasn't impressed at Barca one bit and you have to question a midfielder who can't succeed when played alongside the players they have there and witj the time on the ball they are afforded in Spain.

He's been asked to play a role he isn't suited for in Barca. I doubt Dele would excel as a centre back.

The fact that we need a replacement central midfielder for Dembele does not mean we should set the bar so low, heck I would rather persevere with Josh Onomah. If we are to bring in a new central midfielder as we start in our sparkling new stadium I would suggest we go for a player with a bit more quality.

I have seen a lot of Barca over the last two years and when he has played he has never impressed me. If we are to go for a Barca player I would rather we go for Rafinha.

I read he was an AM at Valencia and CM at Barca, if that's correct and we're supposed to be in for him as a CM then it's a legitimate concern. Ultimately he's failed at a side setup to give it's midfielders time on and options on the ball - doesn't bode well if he has failed to impress there

Personally I don’t think signing him is setting the bar low. His game time at Barca has been limited given their first choice midfield has been Busquets, Iniesta and Rakatic.

If you believe that he’d play like he did at Valencia where he was a first choice then I believe he’d be a great signing. His passing would be massively additive as would his comfort on the ball running with it.

I guess though if you don’t believe he’d recapture that form and only be the Gomes at Barca where he was generally on the bench or out of the squad rather than ever having a run in the side, then I can understand your view

He's not a DM, and is definitely better higher up the pitch. He'd work well in CM with a more defensive player beside him. That was his role at Valencia.
