American politics

I find myself really disconnected from the US election this year. Last time I followed it closely. I think my mental health is much better off, TBF.

The idea of Trump dismantling US democracy or whatever brick will come down if Harris wins is just too much to take in. Not to mention how a self isolating US will affect Europe and empower Putin - which is the really scary part.

Whatever the outcome, I just hope everything turns out better than feared.

Unfortunately I’m addicted to following it - and not very hopeful.

The EU needs to learn to stand on its own two feet.

Wow. Just checked. What was it before? Is he pulling away?

I don't think he's attracting many new voters. Republican voters show up no matter who their candidate is. The democrats have a tougher job in getting the independent, undecided and even their own to come out and actually vote. There's every chance he'll win the popular vote. The electoral college will come down to a handful of swing states.

He won’t win the popular vote.

Here's a little Halloween horror story which might explain the fact that the Trump campaign don't mind insulting everyone in their hate rallies these days.
Hmmm... without checking the accuracy of the article, that does sound ominous. 4D chess from Trump.

4D chess from the heritage foundation.

Elie Mystal, the author, is a legal talking head on MSM so not some basement dweller, but in saying that it is just a guess on his part. Trump and Johnson definitely have something up their sleeves because they've said they have, like some 2 bit movie villans spilling the plan before it happens.
Trump will try something if he looses as his liberty depends on it. Whether it is this scheme or something else who knows, but whatever they come up with will likely eventually end up in the Supreme court, and they have long since lost any notion of impartiallity. I predict utter chaos with the dems eventually capitulating because they follow the rules and the other sides does whatever it needs to get power.

Yes all the tracer bullets have been there from Trump for a while 'youll never have to vote again' 'this will be the last election' etc
They've obviously fathomed out a plan.(Fuelled by their chagrin of losing last time)

I suppose it depends whether it just ends up in the Supreme Court or out in the streets as well?

It can take so many avenues, but the bottom line is that Trump has been fomenting the seeds for years. If it does end up in some Supreme Court battle, then the 'street' engagement will already be mobilized. There has been little pushback against Jan 6th in terms of reprisals -let's face it, minimal punishments and absolutely none for the main insrigators who can afford to suspend it all in circular litigation- so buckle up for more of that brick. I genuinely have no idea what is going to happen election-wise BUT I feel we will see these fudgers force themselves upon everyone and in the process elevate potentil civil war in certain states.

Maybe it's as a fair bit of my media intake from the US is left leaning politically active comedians ie Jon Stewart / David Cross, but it's genuinely puzzling how anyone would vote for Trump and what he represents.

I guess it's the problem of simply being left versus right, if in the UK it was a binary choice of voting for an actual sex offender who instigated an attack on democracy itself, who is incapable of telling the truth , or vote tory it'd be a tough position to be in. With a fairly rudimentary understanding of American politics, I guess it's still the party not the person that you're voting for but surely that pretty much all of Trumps associates from the first term have distanced themselves from him should speak volumes...

And that, unfortunately, is not going to happen.
I think she will win, and pull off surprises in places she is not expected to. I'm basing that off the bullish comments from some of the real experts and the fact that dems have outperformed polling in all the recent elections. We will see how it goes, but that being said, Trump will claim victory on election night irrespective. Like last time he'll point to the 'red wave', a phenomenon that happens in every election where the GOP go ahead early when rural votes come in first. And when the 'blue shift' happens later in that evening, as it always does, he'll cry foul.

That won't be the end of the story though. brick will continue until someone is sworn in.

Part of the puzzling thing for me is how people can believe him. He's such an obvious liar and narcissist how can anyone believe or trust him on anything. I wouldn't believe him if he told me the sky is blue, and I already know the sky is blue, but if he told me I'd go out and check anyway.

People vote for him because they believe him imo. Or they trust that he will do more of what they want to happen.

From my perspective at least people belive him and trust him because they've been lied to so comprehensively by so many sources for so long. People actually, really truly believe in a lot of what he's saying. Enough to be voting for him.

And I'm sure many of them would be equally puzzled by what me and others believe as we are by their beliefs. They would probably also think that I've been lied to to believe as I do. I've been tricked by the main stream media, democrats/communists etc.

The same Trump associates and Republicans who are now distancing themselves have a lot to answer for. As does Fox news, Tucker Carlsson and all of the bastards who knew that they were peddling lies.

We're all be susceptible to believing in this absolute con man of a human being given enough lies. Perhaps some differences in how many lies and how early we'd have to get them. But there's an alternate universe where you and I are big Trump fans talking on a Spurs message board about our admiration for our great leader.
