American politics

I think we're seeing turnout numbers that indicate that Trump both needed, and did, motivate voters on his side.

We're also seeing the same from Biden. My point is that we'll never know if Sanders, Warren, or whoever Scara has in mind would do the same, better or worse at that.

I think that the quality of candidate is more important than where they sit on the right/left spectrum. Populism cuts across right/left by blaming minorities for things that are going wrong and offering simple solutions (that don't work) to complex problems.

The issue with being an opponent against Trump is that it is very difficult to have a rational debate with him and that he makes so much noise, that it can be difficult to get heard. I also think that explaining complex solutions in a clear and understandable way is a skill that only a couple of politicians a generation have.

Trump up against 2008 Obama would be an interesting election.

Both times they went with a more centrist candidate rather than a Sanders or Warren.

We'll never know what would have happened had they gone for Sanders in 2016 or this year. Going by the results the gains from the right haven't exactly been massive.

Could say they should have gone with someone even further to the right than Clinton or Biden. Not sure who the realistic candidate would have been though. I think they would have lost more of the left wing than they would have gained in the centre, but again we'll never know.

I don't see how you support your claim that it was a mistake twice.
They expected and set up for a reasonably comfortable win both times. Trump has doneuch better on both than they expected.

Looks like they got away with this one.

Definitely mistakes being made. Don't see how you can claim that someone further to the right would have done better.

Is this just going to be a stop gap Presidency? The man that bridged the gap from Trump to the next?
It will, at least if the dems want to win the next election. Biden can't make too many radical changes, as that will put off those who swing between dems and reps.

Well, if you already have all the votes from the left and the country is right-leaning enough for the other guy to get 75M votes, you won't take them by scaring away the moderates with a Sanders type.

That's not how the left works. That's not how mobilising people to vote works.

The left aren't all the same that will vote the same regardless.

The "should have gone for Sanders" crowd in 2016 made similar arguments. There's just no way to know how it would have ended.

What you're saying is plausible. It's also plausible that a Sanders/Warren ticket would have mobilised far more voters than they would have lost in the centre. It's plausible that a candidate further to the right would have been able to hold on to enough of the left to make it count. The opposite is plausible.

We still don't know who won of Biden and Trump. We may not know for days. How can you know what would have happened with some other candidate?
