American politics

I think it might be a mistake if the dems focus too much on this investigation. They should rather focus on politics, and beating that muppet in the next election.

Agreed, they need to focus on winning the election through their own vision and policies. If they get bogged down then there's a fair chance they'll lose again.

I see Cohen found another hard drive and is now trying to drive a hard bargain to reduce his sentence. Mic drop. Leave.

I just saw that Bernie has (so far) raised over $18million from over 900,000 donations (from over 500,000 individual donors), whilst having over a million volunteers signed up to his campaign. It's great to see the amount for enthusiasm there is for him already, and with him having the name recognition and being a front-runner in the race from the start (unlike last time), I really believe he is going to be the next president of the USA.

Putting through Sanders in the primaries is the very best way to guarantee four more years of Trump. There's a lot of economically literate Democrat voters who'd vote for Trump before they vote for someone as far to the left as him.

Yeah, that's why we have President Clinton, because the way to beat Trump is to put up a "pragmatic centrist."

Zzz...

The hardest part of all this for Bernie is he is fighting against the elite of the Democratic Party (Schumer, Pelosi etc.) They only just kept him out last time, but he started with no name recognition and 60 points behind Clinton in the polls. No such disadvantage this time. It seems the grassroots are solidly behind him.

Why do you think the party (if they did) tried to stop Sanders from getting the nomination? They want to win the election, they want the most electable candidate, they want someone who has a hope of beating whoever the Republicans put up.

Sanders isn't that.

Because he isn't bought by special interests in the same way that they are, it's as simple as that.

Almost all polling, from 2016 through to now, has Sanders beating Trump and when you look at it, Trump has no area where he can beat Sanders other than blathering about Venezuela, which will only play well with people who would never vote Democrat anyway.

Sanders will fire up the Democratic base, play well with independents (technically, he is one) and win over those Trump voters who had previously voted for Obama, but took a punt on Trump due to the lack of real change that occurred for them under the Obama administration (with the promise of more of the same under Clinton).

Trump might just be bad enough that any Dem could beat him, though I'm not 100% convinced of that. But I do think Bernie would destroy him, it'd be a massive victory imo just on the issue of healthcare alone ('Medicare For All' has the majority of Republican voters supporting it).

Not slating old people here, but are we potentially looking at a 79 year old battling it out with a 74 year old for the presidency? With an 80 year old woman as house speaker?

They could all get alzheimers and die before their term is over. Why not find someone for the future?

They wanted the most electable candidate. They pushed for the candidate they thought was the most electable.

We'll never know if they were correct.

Maybe not, but they had very good reason to think that was the correct choice. Had it not been for butthurt Sanders voters, Clinton would have walked that election.

Possibly. But didn't the democratic party factor that in to their electability evaluation? He did poll better against Trump than Clinton iirc.

They obviously had their reasons, they thought of them as good reasons. That doesn't make it the right choice.

I doubt they ever expected Sanders voters to stay home instead of voting for Clinton - especially with someone like Trump as the opposition.

They're not alone in that. I think most people failed to predict how the likes of Trump, Sanders and Corbyn were able to get people who are usually confused by voting and politics to put an X where they don't understand the consequences of doing so. The old fart in me wants to blame the internet and an entire generation with less of a combined attention span than a puppy, but I haven't anything to back that up.

Sanders isn't even a member of the Democratic Party. . Sander's supporters complain that the Democratic machine favoured Clinton over Sanders, but fail to explain why members of a party should want a candidate who isn't a member of their party. If Sanders hasn't changed his independent affiliation since his last run, why should the Democratic Party want him this time when he is the reason we have Trump in the White House?
