American politics

I couldn't view the John Oliver thing on utoob, but I downloaded it. Brilliant!

splendidly, I don't think many Trump voters watch that show.

They watch Fox News no doubt, believing it to be an accurate news source and not the comedy channel it actually is.

I still think that Trump is just saying what he needs to say to win the primary, I don't think he believes much of it, hence the many contradictions. I don't think he believes in anything but Donald Trump. He just wants to be president but he would probably be more sane than Cruz or Rubio and would disappoint the nutter segment of his support.

I've genuinely been wondering if this has all just been a ruse?! Wasn't he actually very friendly with the Clintons? Sometimes when I watch his speeches, it's like he's saying things for effect, noticing the crowd reaction and being like, 'Really? Ok...so what if I say.....THIS' - cue lot's of cheering.

I don't think it's a ruse, I think he is just an ego-maniac who wants to be President, and he is saying whatever he thinks will help him achieve that goal. In that respect, him and Clinton are quite similar and it's a reason he could beat her in the end -- the fact that she is full of lies and contradictions makes it difficult for her to beat up on Trump for the same.

Isn't that essentially what Auro is saying?

Maybe, I thought he meant 'ruse' and 'friendly with the Clintons' as in Trump doesn't really wanna be president. I might have misunderstood. The Donald is quite smart, he knows how stupid the republican base is and is throwing them all the red meat they can eat.

True, it may have been meant that way. I think he meant the former though. Trumps definantly on an ego trip but he's playing it very well. Maybe he realised from a central (or at least as central as a republican can be) standpoint he had zero chance compared to people who have been in the politics game for much longer than him.

He certainly has the least to lose from all candidates. Best case scenario he ends up president of the most powerful nation on earth. Worst case scenario he carries on playing with his billioanires fortune.

I do find it amazing that I consider Cameroon a toff who's out of touch with people and yet look at the Republicans recent candidates. John McCain worth 2 David Cameroon's. Romney worth about 15 David Cameroon's. And now Donald Trump worth about 1000 David Cameroon's. Good grief.

was interesting to hear Cruz tonight in his "victory' speech in texas, pleading even imploring the other candidates to drop out as he and the republican establishment know its the only way to stop the Trump, and the worst that could have happened was for rubio to win a caucus in somewhere meaningless like Minnesota which means he'll stay in now.

great to see Bernie win 4 states but sadly its all in vain, he'd win the democratic popular vote but all the "super delegates" are in clinton's pocket and they are the power brokers.

The republican establishment hates Cruz just as much and some cases even more than Trump. Rubio was never going to pull out he's their guy now.
Sanders doesnt have anywhere near the democratic popular vote. Clinton has won 60% of the vote to Sanders 40%. And she keeps gaining. For the first time tonight she started targeting Trump in her speech.

I've heard the suggested conspiracy theory that Trump is a double agent sent in by the Clinton's to torpedo the Republican election... Perhaps that just got away from him and he realized he now actually has a snowball's chance in hell.

Though the "explanation" of him just being a egomaniac, self-promoting, serial truth bending media kitten of the highest quality in an anti-establishment political climate is obviously the one...

It now looks set to be Trump v Clinton. Hopefully, despite her faults, Hillary will be the next President.

no, thats completely wrong, the republican national committee is vehemently against Trump, he is not "one of theirs" or a politician, their ideal candidate is indeed Rubio but they would take Cruz in a heartbeat over the Donald, Cruz has plenty of enemies in the senate amongst other places but he has conservative, evangelical views which resonate with the GOP base and wouldn't say/do things that contradict with party lines, Trump is a loose cannon.

I do think the GOP will have to try and club together now to manufacture a brokered conference.
But even if they achieve that Trump is likely (unless he loses next week) to be there with a huge backing, so not choosing him would smack of the kind dictatorial elitism that massively damage the party.

That said, if Trump is the ticket and runs Hilary close, that brings into question the electorates view of the GOP base.

So the only result that won't fundamentally change the GOP is Trump losing the presidential election by a large margin.

I think we'll see Hilary beat Trump by appx 58-42% with many purples voting to keep Trump out rather than Hilary in.

And I do think you'll then end up with a political landscape where the GOP is somewhat like Labour - one badge, a million different factions.

I agree with all of that.

As much as I dislike Clinton, she's a far less dangerous prospect as President than either Trump or Sanders.

I am an expat Brit who has lived in America for 12 years now, I am also an American Citizen. I don't understand the British interest in the American election? Why would you guys care if ' The Donald' wins or not? The President is more of a figurehead than anything else. His or hers powers are severely limited. Mr Trump is playing extremely clever, if in the event he were to win I think that you would see a different Donald Trump in the White House.

May I add that I am personally leaning towards Bernie Sanders, however if he fails to win the nomination due to the Democratic party's corrupt use of 'Super delegates" I will then move to 'undecided' 'as the Clintons are the Devil's spawn IMHO.

Clinton is winning comfortably against Sanders without counting the superdelegates. She has a lead of about 200 among pledged delegates. For Sanders to win he needs to beat Clinton by 7% the rest of the way, a swing of 27% from the voting so far.

A pretty devastating attack on Trump here by Romney. It's probably too little, too late.

It says more about the general population of the US, were they to vote for such a public buffoon. George W Bush was one thing but Trump is an even bigger joke. Personally I won't be setting foot on American soil if he's in charge and good luck to Americans travelling around the world because I guarantee their national reputation will be in the gutter if he gets into the White House.
