Aaron Lennon

Jol tried him central a couple of times and said that he thought that he'd end up there. I think that his end product is fine, he has a decent shot on him and his close range passing is excellent. I just wish he would take a chance and do it more often. Maybe the competition for places will make him step up his performances in a similar way to Bentley's arrival did.

I don't agree that he has a good shot, I think most schoolboys honestly could generate more power than he does. End product to me is goals and chances created, not necessarily assists.

I think that when he has a shot on goal he is pretty good. The problem is that he doesn't have enough.

Poch has worked with and massively improved worse players than Lennon at SCBC. He might not be able to get anything more out of him but I am interested to see if he can.

Fair enough

I'm agreeing with you really. Reading further down, GloryEze asked WHO could pass to Lennon and then you did say Bentaleb and hopefully Strambouli could pass it early to Lennon; I was just agreeing that Bentaleb can pass, and Capoue can too, and Mason... we do have players that can pass, it is a myth that they can't. Probably because we like to play sideways and the whole turgid AVB controlled possession thing but let's not go there.

Quite often our longer passes are to switch wings which rarely is enough to set Lennon up against one full back... usually by the time play is switched there is time for somebody to cover so I'm not a big fan of the booming crossfield pass. It looks good and does uncork play a bit, but rarely leads to a big chance, just a deep cross. The pass really needs to be a quick vertical pass down the pitch to release Lennon one-on-one with some hapless full back or even better centre back.

I suppose Lennon spends too much time and energy chasing back and would have more praise if he just stayed up top and out wide waiting to sprint onto through balls, I have no problem with him doing that sometimes.

Phew!
I thought you hadn't seen the post where I said I thought Bentaleb could be one of the players to get the early pass out! Good shout on Mason too, though he needs time to come through and develop a bit more. Bentaleb is a rarity in so much as he is already 'ready' and has been for a while. Again, one of the rare things I can give Sherwood big credit for...

Lennon has possibly the weakest shot I've ever seen for a pro player.
They are literally back passes!
That said, I still love his speed over 10 yards, ball control and the way he uses his low centre of gravity. I'll be gutted if we can't get more out of him, and flog him.

Saw Modric much?

Lennon's game is his acceleration, he has a brilliant first touch and a good variety in his crosses.

He needs to -> stay forward, get ball early (his teammates here), take on his man, get the cross in. Occasional mix up by coming inside, he also needs to attack the far post when our play is coming from opposite side of pitch.
Team needs to -> get the ball to him early and often, FB needs to learn to work runs with him, overlap, create the space to either release Lennon or make a cross.

I don't like to make it a Lennon or Townsend thing, to me Lennon at his best is so much more, and maybe I'm wrong, but we can play to him a bit more and get so much more out of it.

You still have to deliver a decent cross at the end of the run.

You simply have to get the ball to a team mate in front of goal, something Lennon is quite good at.

We need to attack quicker and exploit space better if we want players like Lennon and Lamela to truly excel. Playing the ball to the feet of someone with an opposition player right next to him isn't nearly as effective.

Lennon's run inside and cut back is a more potent weapon than any crosser in the league. The problem is that he does not do it enough.

Because Defoe isn't here anymore.

That guy now would be Soldado, but if its Ade thats playing its not going to happen because more often than not he doesnt get into those areas....

Unbelievable really how for a large percentage of 30-somethings on this forum we have probably only ever seen Anderton, Defoe and Lennon play live from that list... (And it looks like this list has been extended just so these recent players made it on their at the bottom)

It's actually pretty sad.

Anyone think there could be someone in the current squad capable of making this list in the next decade?
