Thomas Frank - Head Coach

So you spat the dummy & left & now you decided to come back & continue with this garbage. You are a mod & you think that is suitable. Imagine if a victim of rape or sexual assault read that. Take a good hard look at yourself.
Thank you for articulating what I couldn't last night, after 7 billion drinks.

@Jordinho should be publicly stripped, tarred and feathered. Shame. Shame.

Hmwhat is the rape stuff? I've only seen fudge=f**k
If it was just fudge Ange most wouldn't care including me i would put it down to him acting like a child again but he wrote
fudge Ange. I mean that in the most serious way.

if i wrote that about your wife, girlfriend, children, husband, boyfriend or significant other how would you feel what would you think.
if Anges wife or children read that do you think they might think about there dads safety.

to be clear if i wrote that i would expect you to pull me up & make it clear it's not acceptable & should i continue with such behaviour further action will be taken.

Really enjoying how we change our pressing, but more or less always defending as a unit. Intense high press at times, like super intense no holding back. Palhinha and VdV way into their half along with a lot of other players.

Then also happy to sit back in a low or mid block, but keeping up the intensity and aggression while doing so and everyone seems to know what they're doing.

Was a short spell at the start of the second half against City where I thought we got too deep and too passive. Looked a bit like the last 20 against PSG. Not sure how we managed to get out of that and into a better mode, but we managed it and that's so important.

Also good signs that we're able to go long with a purpose. For the Johnson goal we got Richarlison, Sarr and Kudus close together when we played the longer ball. That's so important. Not just one player alone receiving it and having to the almost impossible.

If it's the same point in the game were they dropped back wells was gesturing to the defence to move up. He did it quite a bit at the beginning of the second half.

Did you know this is the first time we have won back to back games in the premier league since February

16th Feb Tottenham 1 - 0 United
22nd Feb Ipswich 1 - 4 Tottenham

Before that we hadn’t won back to back games since September 2024

21st September Tottenham 3 - 1 Brentford
29th September United 0 - 3 Tottenham

And we didn't even need United to do it.

My optimism for Frank and this team is such that I think you should start looking up more "since X" stats to have them on hand as they'll be needed soon.

Nice comparison with Amorim.

At Brentford Frank started with 3-5-2 in 53 games and 4-3-3 in 51 games and changed between them during matches. In 22 games he started with 4-2-3-1. They were his three most used formations. “Different tools to play around in games depending on the momentum, the score,” Frank says which, in truth, should be a statement of the obvious. It is the essence of coaching – in-game management and adaptability to find a way to win.

“I think I’m pretty sure what my end goal is but also very aware I have a group of players and those are the players I need to work with,” Frank said. “I need to work with them inside the principles and how I want to play, but depending on their qualities and abilities I will tweak it accordingly.”

It is not rocket science but, in modern football, it almost sounds like heresy. How many managers actually say that? How many state: look, it’s not how the club or the players adapt, this is what I have got and this is how I am going to adapt to try to win.

Amorim:

“I have to sell my idea. If I change all the time it is going to be worse,” Amorim argued when it was first pointed out to him last December that he may well have his system and way of playing – 3-4-2-1, with two No 10s operating behind a central striker – but did not possess the players to do it. So why not, in the short-term at least, change and try to win some games and then – when he could – get in the players to play the way he wanted?

No, Amorim maintained, it would “not make sense” to change to a system “that I don’t believe in”. But how can a manager believe in only one system? It is illogical. That is what does not make sense. A coach can believe in being more attacking, more possession-based or be more defensive and preserve the clean sheet. But how can a coach believe in only one formation?

In short, one adapts formation and tactics to best suit the players he had and the opponents they have to deal with, the other insists on playing one way even when he doesn't have the players. If done right the former should generate a team that is better than the sum of its parts, the latter is doomed to fall short of the best the players are capable of.

Aye the game against City did demonstrate a variety of defensive setups. Mid block, some low block and of course the man to man high press. It shows Frank’s willingness for flexibility and how adaptable he is. This is exactly what I wanted from the previous regime, some awareness of our and the opponents defiencies and having a plan to exploit them. It won’t work so smoothly in every game, but it does feel like we now have a coach again whose strengths are an ability to maximise the qualities of his existing players rather than trying to force a system on to them.

This was more than Jose and Conte’s deep block 10 man massed defence and pray and hope they don’t break through. We’ve beaten City plenty of times over the years playing that way but it’s never really felt that controlled or at least it hasn’t for a long while. The last time I really remember us totally dominating City so decisively was the first leg of the CL quarter. Even last year in the 0-4 City could and really should have had a couple before we got started. It was more a case of City not taking their chances than us really controlling the game. This match was something different, it felt like an evolution of the PSG game. Now of course we shouldn’t get too carried away, this City are probably not going to match the quality of their previous sides but they are still very good and a team to be wary of.

Not getting into (another discussion about the past).

I like the flexibility. What I like even more is how cohesive we looked in those different defensive setups.

In the PSG game I think Tel got some stick for, imo, not running around like a headless chicken chasing lost causes and rather staying in the frame/system.

I really dislike when players make themselves easy to bypass - regardless of how the setup is. Along with high pressing that ends up being easy to play past because it's not executed well. Very little of that from this team under Frank so far. We look cohesive. Low or mid block, high press, whatever. And with some periods as the exception we've managed to play with aggression in mid and low blocks too. Dropping deeper and getting passive is another bug bear of mine.
