Thomas Frank - Head Coach

Genuine question - has another top 6 club appointed a manager ‘like’ Frank before?

I’m trying to think of one where the advantage or the method seemed to centre around some element of tactical flexibility. There were very specific things we did against City, ways we chose to press, gaps we chose to fill, and also the way we put moves together, that were wildly different from Burnley and PSG. Not to mention the rotation of the midfield for this game.

I’m not talking in terms of profile, but in terms of the method of the coach. There’s a lot of ‘system’ managers. Jose seemed to have a lot of analysis on the opposition but the game management boiled down to a similar defensive shape when defending and a lot of freedom when attacking. Maybe Slot was actually a version of this last season - he was still attacking but in a more measured way than Klopp.

Frank is interesting in that he genuinely tries to win every game, but the method - the offensive and defensive schemes - are different every time. If he can properly marry the offensive football with the defensive solidity every time, we really may have found the perfect coach for us. We need an edge if we aren’t going to have the very most money.

My only worry the other way is that I feel we may drop some points to easier teams because our attacking play isn’t as refined as teams that routinely play their system to break teams down every week. But then, that’s what Kudus and GHod willing Savinho would be for. You can choose to double them up, but you’d be leaving space for Spence, Porro, and Udogie to come through.

Anyway, curious if there is another manager a big 6 club has hired that has come close in method. I can’t quite think of one right now. Maybe Howe is close?

First off, I think the way he handled the Friday presser was excellent. His choice of words could not have been scripoted better (and I know he didn't necessarilt prepare a script more than he has his beliefs).

I think we are once again at a place where we have a manager who can deliver some great things if we really back HIM. In a sense it feels pretty similar to the Poch era. It is why the Eze stuff was actually quite confusing. As was being said by some (me one of them) taking a step back, eze did not especially suit what Frank wants to do. We are all forever in love with a traditional 10 (of course we are - we're Spurs supporters!) and it is clear that Frank requires a range of qualities. If a '10' is in play, he will want them to be aggressive and relentless too. So we really have a chance to give HIM what HE needs and further build. Today I was worried that he did not have enough on the bench to execute the result by maintaining the style of play. Thankfully he did, but there is no doubt that an extra wide forward such as a Savinho would be great for his Spurs.

It was me ha.

I’ve seen franks Brentford a fair amount over the years having relatives that are season ticket holders … that number 10 is someone with a motor that can cover in deep and either hit a direct ball or carry the ball forward into space waiting for the wider players to break the lines.

Eze as much as he is a talented player, we are not going to be pass pass pass sideways around the box and need a little tricky player to thread a ball through as our main form of attack.

It’s direct with pressure on the ball over the pitch and hitting teams fast on the counter if sat deep. But I would say it would be nice to have a player like Maddison to switch things up should it be required.

MGW as that 10 with his playing and work rate would have been brilliant

I’m big on Akliouche being that player now. Had no prior knowledge of him before the links, but he feels very much like an MGW type player for what I’ve been able to now see. More physical than Eze.

This can still be a great window compared to previous years. So often if we’ve missed out on the core target, we’ve signed completely different players, ones that are clearly not good enough, no one at all, or players past their best.

If we move through the gears with a clear idea on the player, this can still give Frank a strong foundation.

He is similar without the aggression but a better shot
I started following b him in Jan when I heard him in linked with a club (can’t remember who)
Reminds me of Bellingham Stylistically
