Nobody is over-egging it. You're being ridiculous now. Yes, if he finished 10th it wouldn't be as impressive, what's your point? He didn't finish 10th, he finished 8th and finished comfortably 8th at that. They were never realistically going to challenge the top 7 clubs were they? You're saying "oh GHod they finished 8 points behind 7th how average". 7th placed club was Man friggin Utd, I mean jesus, this is SOUTHAMPTON we're talking about here. They finished 8 points behind Man Utd! The top 7 are clearly ahead of the rest, there is a significant gap in quality of squad.

However, I would say at the start of the season, there were a load of teams that most people would say have a better squad that Southampton on paper. Swansea had bought Bony and already had a good team, full of promising young players and established Premiership players and a potentially lethal attack. Saudi Sportswashing Machine have a squad full of French and African internationals, much better than Southampton on paper, especially before Cabaye left. Sunderland had spent heavily and they had Italian internationals, Jose Altidore, who was very highly rated in Spain, Adam Johnson, who is very talented. They bought loads of players in the summer. Norwich spent very heavily and bought some very highly rated players like Van Wolfswinkel, Stoke had an established squad, full of talent, like Crouch. The fact that people now regard Lambert as a better player than Crouch, is probably mostly down to Pochettino IMO. At the start of the season I don't see everyone seeing Southampton finishing above Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Swansea and well a lot of the clubs they finished above. People are just using hindsight and the impression Southampton have all these quality players. They weren't that good before Pochettino took over. He made them that good.

I'll finish off by saying that you think we need a top manager, not Mr average. Well wake up sonshine, a top manager is not going to come here as we saw with Van Gaal, they will always get a better offer. The talk of Ancelotti is laughable.

I'm not even sure Benitez is that realistic, even though I don't want him.

Honestly like we find with players, we are not in the market for top ready-made trophy machines. We need to get the next up-and-comer on the way up like Liverpool did with Rogers and Everton did with Martinez.

You do know we've just finished building a state of the art academy and training centre and are in the process of starting a massive stadium and urban regeneration project?

Did you miss all that?

I didn't miss all that, I assumed they were paid for by sponsorship and selling the old land, same way everyone else pays for such things
 
Just for perspective, a fair few Arsenal fans online who really do follow football are saying it is now time to fear Spurs if we get Poch. I think many will be surprised with what he will being to Spurs. I am really excited.

We're building on most of the same land so we have none to sell and we've had to buy up a tonne of extra land to make space for the larger structure, as well as lobbying local and national government to improve transport links and begin urban regeneration projects, we've had to obtain planning permission and seek compulsory purchase orders against local properties that would not sell.

We've had to spend millions on employing architects and obtaining tenders. We've spent more than we have as a club, which is why ENIC had to give us a £40m interest free loan to cover the costs incurred so far.

all good points I'd overlooked, and far more than I would expect, 40m is still only 1 years tv money though right?

I am not sure mate a few arsenal fans with us getting closer to them even last year which was an abomination of a year they get scared of us over taking them because some of them have never experienced it.

I would hope that is the plan, and to be fair the way we have maintained top 6 finishes despite many managerial changes is a testament to the fact that the club is pretty strong behind the scenes with less reliance on a strong overseeing manager. I still think Levy deserves questions though even in that case, because AVB was never going to be an expendable coach that could just come and go, he would have been a man with grand plans of his own. He should just not have been appointed.

I'm excited about Poch though. I think he is bang on what we need. I really, really hope that he and Baldini share similar beliefs about how football should be played. They need to ensure this is spot on before he is signed. If Baldini didn't tie in with AVB once they had worked together for a bit, and if Ramos didn't really rate a lot of Commoli's signings, we simply can't allow it to happen again. I'm hoping that after GHod knows how many years, we may finally have the coach that can work under the constraints of our club and tie in with the DOF we are employing. Baldini's signings have all been hard working, team orientated kinds of players and hopefully this will be a good relationship.

And hopefully we're now at the point where even if we lose one great player per summer, we have enough coming through to not require major upheaval every time.

Also the Telegraph piece mentions him getting the best out of Lamela and Soldado being part of the job.

I think we have a decent unit of players. And we have a few players who are top class potentially top class.

He has Lloris, Vertognen, Walker, Sandro and Eriksen who players who could get in to the top 4 sides in this country for me.

Other than that there is bags of potential. Raw pace in Townsend and Lennon, passion from Holtby, intelligence from Soldado, physical attributes from Capoue, lots of talent in Chiriches, Dembele need a shrink but has so much natural ability. Kane and Bentaleb have talent too.

A good coach is what this bunch need. We don't need much bar a left back in personnel. Poch will do wonders with us. I feel it in my waters.
