I’ve been critical of Solanke since he joined, was told to be patient etc. My goodness, one of the most limited strikers I’ve ever seen at Spurs. I honestly wonder how the conversations played out between RDZ, Lange and the owners (during the transfer window) that led them to say “yep, it’s enough to to just have Solanke”.

Be surprised if we manage 50 goals this season and will therefore be looking down as opposed to up.

Solanke was a modern day Heskey but now that he’s become injury prone he’s not even a decent target man any more.

Was being slightly facicious but

For a manager whose core system is supposedly on getting ball back to front via progressive passing, we have seem to stockpiled some 1:1 take on specialists.

So what's the model

- Build from back, bait the press (Kinsky -> JPVH being core progressive pass out)
- Get the ball to progressive passer in midfield (JPVH -> Fernandes)
- Strait down middle or out wide (Fernandes -> Savio/Tel/Kudus or direct to Marmoush)

What I'm not seeing is what is final play when Savio/Kudus/Marmoush has the ball? and the lack of goals seems to show we don't have that yet or haven't figured out how to implement it yet.

May just be me, but I'm missing that final play (what's our go to?), e.g. what's the version of Ange's default winger to opposing winger at back post, who is supposed to be our Johnson for the tap in?

We don’t have that player
And the crossing has been high and generally poor imo

Id caution that we haven't actually yet seen a Savio/Marmoush/Kudus lineup so it's a bit hard to judge what happens next. I do think you are on the right line of thinking that Kudus and Savio at least are quite indirect in terms of the final ball. Savio on the left can be a more direct as he better angles for the final pass or strangely a shot as he has a better shot from left to right rather than the other way.

I do like Kudus and I think he has the potential to be a massive player for us but questioning his actual effectiveness is a fair path. I think sometimes when I compare his to direct RWF who get goals or a high number of shots off he's often dribbling from a deeper position and at a later point of attacking momentum. It's somewhat rare for Kudus to ever really be taking on one defender, beat them and then be in the optimum position to get a shot off. Notwithstanding that is the greatest shooter anyway.

I think the model in the long term is you get incision, overlaps and creativity from Savio on the left. Direct goal threat and runs in behind from Marmoush in the middle and incision and goal threat from Kudus on the right. It's a little unbalanced you could argue as ideally you want goal threat from both sides but Savio threat whilst increased on the left is never going to be that op imo but I think if we can get him flowing his dribbling and creativity might hopefully make up for it.

Then you add some goal threat from whomever is playing the AM. We know both Maddison and Kulu can offer goals playing that role so you would have to hope and expectation they can also directly contribute in that manner.

I think the model ultimately is supposed to be one where the threat comes from all angles and so we get goals spread across the team rather than it all coming from specific players. Until now we've not been able to put out either balanced stack or one with the primary players available. This weekend looks like it might be the first time we can get the a balanced attacking quartet out.
