***OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool***

I suppose the debate around Gray is what his best position is, when it comes to men’s senior football, he has barely played in midfield. He was the right back in his one season at Leeds, and for us has been played at RB, CB, LB and in various CM roles. It really is time for the sake of his own development, where he chooses, or is given, a specialised role and focuses on it.
I don't think we will find this out this season. It looks like he's the cover RB and we have a lot of options in midfield many of which you would have to expect to be ahead of him (and they should be).

Once Porro is back, we might see Gray getting the end of matches when hopefully we are already in control and want to rest the likes of Fernandes/Bentancur/Tonali.

It’s the same issue I was raising around Tonali after the weekend, he is dropping deep to compensate for Bentancur. Once Fernandes came on, it released his average position 10 yards further up the pitch. Bergvall for me has a similar profile to Tonali, they are both box to box ball carriers, but Tonali is a better passer. For me, the make-up of the midfield should be Fernandes or Gray as the 6 and Tonali or Bergvall as the 8, the entire dynamic of the midfield and balance of the entire team changes with those pairings.

Seems crazy we spend £200m on a new midfield pair then play them out of position, we should build the formation and tactics around them being in their best positions. You saw last night as soon as Fernandes went deeper and Maddison was in the 10 position we looked so much better balanced.

I don't think he's good enough to be a first choice RB for a top club and from everything I've heard he'd rather play in midfield. Wouldn't surprise me if asks to leave next summer if he just plays RB all the time.

Another strange one, we pay £40m for one of the most promising midfield prospects in the country and play him out of position. I hope there's a long term plan to at least try him in midfield, maybe he'll learn a lot at RB that will make him a better midfielder.

Having listened to pretty much all of RDZ interviews and pressers I think he knows this. He just hasn’t had a 10 fit and ready.

As soon as Madders is fully fit (I hope he starts Saturday) RDZ will have to choose 2 from 3 in midfield. And then they rotate around knocks and tiredness.

You add full time Maddison and bring Porro back into that team and the goal potential goes up. Still need a competent striker of course.

He won't offer the things you would want from a 10. He's not going to link the midfield to the striker and you suggest that striker is Solanke What's even the point? 🤣

Solanke has no nose for goals, no hunger to score. No ability to shift the ball and get his shot off. So we play Marmoush who isn't a provider to provide to Solanke who isn't a goal scorer. 🤣

Which is fine, but again given we did not sign another 9 we are literally left with Solanke and given the lack of goals and goalscorers he will figure in the side this season

I get why you think that's the best option, I just worry that no goals Solanke will be more of a net negative than a net positive. Yes he's a physical presence but if he isn't scoring or actively helping us score he's just a body on the pitch contributing nothing and making the overall team weaker.

I would take Solankes 1 in 3 from his first season in a heartbeat especially considering he is the only 9 on the books

It's no wonder why we can't score goals

In the weekend-game there was a nearly identical situation around the 30-minute mark, where Gray himself made an excellent run into acres of space in that area, only for the ball to be played out to a double-blocked player on the wing, and lost.

I'm starting to wonder if we're so focused on the intricate that we subconciously block out the obvious and easy, as if we're thinking, "nah, that's too easy, rather find the second or third option".
But every now and then, the obvious pass is the right pass, as in this example.

This appears to be an confidence-, cadence- and coherence-issue, and given time and proper management, it will come right.

The same can be said for our inability to properly finish off attacks. Sometimes taking a pot-shot is the right option, get the ball on goal, on target enough times, and good stuff will follow.

I'm looking at the last 5 games in a bit of a perspective, as a block, and I'm slightly encouraged and cautious optimistic about the autumn. I hope our season really starts october 10th, away at Old Trafford.

What I definately do like about us at the moment is that it is impossible for me to be indifferent to our games. We look exiting enough that I watch a cup-game vs Liverpool as an exiting prospect, not a dreaded task, I scream at the telly when players make the wrong choice (which is good, because it means there were more than one) and I have emotions about the team again.

The last remnants of the reign of the Danish Dementor must be swept away, and the fog will lift and finally joy and happines will come through to us again.

Right.. I'm going off my rocker again... Better end this post before.. ah, too late!

Been having the same conversation with my son. I gave him 1/10 the other day. I could literally do what he did - which was nothing.

Btw - I think this physical thing is a myth. He’s turned into a gentle character that doesn’t challenge and doesn’t jump.

1 in 3 in kamikaze Ange ball. Ange's system system created chances, a striker will get some goals but even then he barely had a sniff in most games. I just think he doesn't solve any of our current goal scoring issues.

I guess we'll see because RDZ has tried lots of different variations to see what sticks so he will try what you're suggesting at some point.

Again maybe he doesn't, but he is what we have available, thats the point, not the player

Marmoush will be great up front when there’s a player behind who can find him.

Solanke will be good for tough games where he needs to battle physically, like Gallagher being picked for Forest away. All this talk of him being a nice guy and soft don’t take away from the fact he’s a big lump that can get stuck in. He’ll never be a 20 goal a season striker for us, but if he can be a cog in a well functioning team then that won’t matter

I have to say i was disappointed that we didn't start a stronger line-up from the beginning. It may or may not have made a difference in the end (it was at Anfield after all) but i was disappointed that we didn't show the intent to really go for it with our starting line-up.
From the sound of things (i didn't watch much of the game) it does seem we at least made a go of it and were maybe unlucky.

One benefit will be that RDZ will be able to say to any of those who REALLY played poorly and who don't normally start, e.g. Tel, "Hey, you had your chance to shine but you blew it, i don't want to hear anything from you whilst you warm the bench"

Hopefully we take what positive signs we could from Tuesday into the game vs Villa.
