Transfer thread

From the squad thread, might help. Alli Gold thinks the net spend is <100M

What is interesting is with so many loans, the loan fee component (often not mentioned), could actually be significant.

So continuing the ~150m net transfer spend then, just obviously far more active though. I wonder if that’s a one off clearing the decks and rebuild for a new manager or if we’ll see this as the longer term plan, Chelsea style.
I don't think it's possible for us to co continue that level of activity.

I think it was more of a case of honouring promises made to De Zerbi when he took over, as we were desperate he could hold us to ransom so to speak.

Fingers crossed it works, but it was refreshing to get some big money deals done very early on and decisively.

The obvious cycle would be as the team become more refined ...you need to buy less (bit like the goons)....the caveat being if all goes well?🤣...if it don't, gawd knows where you're left.

Across the board there does appear to be much more trading this window.

Anyone else glad the whole thing is over?

Lost the will to care the last few days with the amount of rumours going around and the scattergun approach we seemingly took. That's not really a cut at the club, they were doing their job - it's just the scrutiny and coverage it gets is a bit much.

Thankfully, we now know what we have and can just plough on and hopefully start picking up points.

Go back 30-40 years it's amazing to think of now, and the associated industry built all around the transfers of football players. Insane.

Rather than players names, I was more interested in the strategy to change things around. Even though he doesn't kick a ball we know that Roberto is the single most influence to the outcome on the pitch. There is a massive part of me that questioned why he needed to churn such a massive part of the squad and why he couldn't coach his philosophy into those existing players and get their buy in. Happy to live with it though.

When I look at the squad now, I think I see what could be a pretty good 1st team. I see a few very decent backup players but I don't see a deep and strong squad yet. It feels like Poch's middle years where he worked with a central core group of players but didn't have a great deal of depth behind them.

Surely there is a pretty obvious answer to this? :D

De Zerbi said, "We have 10, 11, 12 players good enough to stay as players and people"

He wasn't just saying it for effect, and it's something that has been said enough on this forum. You was someone up until last season claiming our squad had good depth and we just needed to make a couple of tweeks each window - I'm afraid that just wasn't the case :(.....

To be fair, I think the strategy and consistency in strategy was there for all to see if you look at who we pursued. Do I understand why we wanted so many wide players when we seemingly need a goalscorer? Not really. Do I understand why we didn't really pursue a proper right back as back up? No. So I can see what the club were trying to do and they were consistent even if I don't agree with it completely. They know more than me about football and the situation behind the scenes so I'm happy to see how it plays out.

On the squad and letting players go, it's a fair question but if you can't guarantee Vuskovic or Spence minutes, they're gonna want to go. You can't coach Danso to be a good ball playing centre back - he's a very good defender but he'll never be Beckenbauer. You can't make Romero want to stay. You can't coach Vicario to be as good with his feet as you want your keeper to be.

Then there is character - it's more than about football skill. We don't know these lads, RDZ does and needs to evaluate who adds to the group and who doesn't in terms of character.

After a catastrophically bad 10 months since Levy went, the board have played a blinder over the past few months assuming they can afford what they've done and it isn't contingent on us getting Europe next season. They've appointed a very good manager, they've backed him to the hilt.

It's now over to RDZ and the players.

This last bit is key. At the very least the board have done theoir jobs to the point whereby the coach can't moan in the press about 'lack of strategy', 'not acting like a big ambitious club' etc

Just have to hope RDZ has the character to bring calm in what will be some choppy waters over the next few months (the lack of European games alone will mean there will be some serious bench warming for many, he has to be cute enough to deal with that in a way that doesn't cause too much disharmony before January).

Some of that is revisionism though. He said it at the time where we had an injury pile-up and I'm pretty certain he was saying "based on the players I've so far had to work with.......". However, that statement comes back very differently without this important context.

You need to understand my comments more though. What actually happens if you do follow the winning clubs model and mostly add 1 quality player in January and then 2 or 3 each summer? What does your squad look like after 3 or 4 years of sticking relentlessly to that strategy whilst integrating some youngsters to manage gaps?

Well Pep only ever did that and he won a treble that included the CL with 5 or 6 U21's in his squad. Liverpool only did things this way and mostly still do. Arsenal have just broken into that next layer by doing the same.

My only hope is that this manager prevails and sticks around as the next one will want another project restart and churn the squad. We've now done the major overhaul and every subsequent window under RDZ should now follow my model, in my opinion.

At the end of the day and I don't mean this in the literal sense, but we have made our deal with the devil, RDZ is the most backed manager in Spurs history with what he wanted and also the control on the future of youth etc. I know I sound like a broken record but its now down to him to make it work, all the pressure is on him

I guess the game changer is to do with UEFA comps, especially CL. Only with that can you keep the bigger squad happy.

I was particularly interested how these players could tell the difference between an injury ravaged 2 seasons with UEFA football where pretty much every player got game time, compared to what might come next when they're getting splinters under the new manager with no UEFA football. These players have rightly been quite ruthless with our club, and we probably deserve that.

Like some others, I do think Roberto's team selections in the first 3 games sent some messages around. As did the way he managed pre-season. Good for him.

Well yes obviously, but to start with you have to gut the squad of all the mediocre players of which we had many. In Pep's first season he bought in a number of players well into double figures, it's only years down the line minor surgery was required.

With what we have done in future windows a lot less will need to be changed. But your question was why we had to churn so much of the squad, and the answer remains the same - Many technically aren't good enough, along with a couple who we probably wouldn't of sold but for the fact we don't have European football so can't guarantee appropriate amount of game time for them and as such they wanted to leave.....
