Cody Gakpo

I have been saying this all pre season, the squad is currently better suited to a 433, at least until Deki and Xavi are both fully back.

On Wednesday we played a 433 with Bentancur as the single pivot in possession and it changed to a fluid 442/4231 out of possession, Fernandes in the initial out of possession press phase was right up next to Solanke before dropping back ahead of Bentancur and Bergvall.
Exactly. Round pegs in round holes.

Switch Tonali for Bergvall and you have an excellent midfield three allowing each of them the freedom to do what they do best. Bergvall, Gallagher and Gray as backups.

It is but you want the flexibility to play a traditional #10 as well which we don’t have until one of them proves their fitness.

With the business done I question we need him for the same reason.

For me it would be either a CF or MGW type as we cant rely on Madders and Xavi is the season away.
That’s my concern
MGW Is super flexible in game and has a strong history of delivering
I wouldn’t complain at Gakpo but do think he has more limitations than someone like MGW
Hell I’d even go for Scott too
That 10 role is a big issue for me

In the era of Arsenal harra ball long throws and corner merchants I’m happy for to sign all the technical small lads and play fun attacking football even if it for end result in league titles. Didn’t we play a 433 in the 80s with Ardiles and Hoddle getting kicked to bits and 5ft7 Clive Allen up front?

Get me MGW or Kroupi. fudge it bring back Jose Dominguez.

Why play a system that doesn’t fit the squad in their current state of availability is my point.

We don’t have to wait long for Madders or Kulu (🤞) to be available for that role. Till then, let’s not force a player unsuited to the #10 role into the team for the sake of it, but play a more flexible midfield with superior players instead.

It's a relatively recent thing, now most teams have a high proportion of players 6' or over wasn't the case 15-20 years ago. Getting like American sport where everyone are musclebound freaks.

I agree why play a system, have a strategy and players good enough to adapt to situations in the game.

The game is constantly evolving. It’s better to be ahead of the trends than to copy others especially when it’s dog brick football. If we wanted to do that should have stuck with Tommy Frank.
