Alfie Devine

When we loan a player we usually extend their contract by a year to cover it.

Yep, as I said Alfie's camp were smart.

They only accepted an extension of 1 year when the loan happened and the new contract offer came along. If not, he'd be out of contract at the end of this season. Signing up until 2029 or 2030 would have been madness for him based on the lack of opportunities he's been given.

Alfie holds the cards in my opinion.

Hope we put a buy back in just in case he kicks on.

We need to get better at selling all our players, including youth

Chelsea are the masters of this - with that buy back in just in case.

Would have played 50+ games for us the past 2 seasons had stuck around.

You're in luck, the club are allegedly hiring for someone to lead the department of hypothetical past realities. Instead of telling us macarons on here how things would have gone in your version of wot you reckon for free, you could be earning the big bucks doing a massive service for the club.

Moving on from your textbook version of an unproveable assertion, it's quite possible Preston wouldn't have taken him without an option. And 5m for an academy product is "pure profit", as much as I loathe that phrase and how everyone has suddenly become a footballing finance guru overnight. If he wants to carry on his good work there, fair play to him, good luck and GHod speed.

However if he wants to stick it out and go for it in preseason, or simply wait for a better offer than all power to him. It feels like PNE is the move for him though, seemed like a good campaign in the championship and I don't imagine it's easy fighting your way into a team as a loanee...

It’s not a hypothetical. We had an injury crisis in his position.

It's a bold sentence to start off with when you're factually incorrect. Suggesting an alternative reality in which Alfie stayed is indeed a hypothetical. You don't want to battle on semantics, as it turns out, random people on the internet may actually know stuff, or failing that, have access to a dictionary.

He's a creative player, and we had a lot of injuries leaving us lacking in creativity, so I'm not completely disregarding your opinion. But stating the amount of appearences he would've got, like it's a stone cold fact, after seeing how it all played out doesn't get you a cookie (if I was indeed in charge of cookie distribution).

Ange/Frank/RDZ did not really trust academy players, two of those also saw him in pre-season and decided to off load/not use him even though we had a lot of fixtures in Europe and Domestically.

I think we have to accept he just is not up to the required level currently.

Said everyone about Kane and Mason, till Poch came along.

I have no idea to be honest what De Zerbi's approach to using academy players are. I can though see the logic of using old heads like Pahlinha and Gallagher over much higher ceiling players like Gray and Bergvall, in his 8 game run-in.
