Roberto De Zerbi *OFFICIAL*

(reposting this because it appears to have got lost...for those who have asked to discuss football)

I think it's very hard to accurately gauge how De Zerbi's appt is going to work out until the summer.
These 7 games coming up are going to be simply a test of how much he can make the players remember they're decent players and feel confident again. I suspect there's a core he will look to for that, Gray, Porro, Romero, VdV, Vicario, Richarlison, Palhinha, Gallagher. I think if gets Bentancur back he will be all over that. Of course, a returning Kudus will be up his strasse too. I am interested to see how a striker like Solanke will do under him. I think that is the core he is going to lean on heavily these last 7 games.

I have to say too I am a little alarmed at just how much freedom they are reportedly giving him, in terms of signing power, etc. I mean, he is getting the full monty! Or is it just carte blanche on paper?

I will say it must be scary for the clubs around us to note that we appear to have hit our bottom a while ago,De Zerbi signs on as new manager and we still aren't in the bottom 3? I think he'll keep us up.

Its going to be interesting to see what initial impact he has, he is a technical coach, not someone who appears to be a motivator, keen to see how we look at Sunderland and how many of his ideas get across to the team.

You wonder if 7 games is enough

Indeed. That difference between loud and motivational. Let's indeed see. 7 games is enough for any manager who can get in that space between the eyebrows and hairline.
I hope he does not go 'all-in' on 'his' way immediately, and settle for some confident, battling performances to get us points.
He comes in with a big gust of 'energy' and 'gusto', he appears to have a natural presence, so I think it should be enough unless he immediately makes enemies (I am not expecting that early doors).

I'd be more confident if he'd been appointed much earlier.

What the Tudor experiment showed, in my opinion, is that the players are criminally unfit (something you can only seriously address in preseason) and they're not particularly... flexible? tactically-aware? Tudor's system might be a tad more sophisticated than Frank's, but it's not rocket science either. Unfortunately, the only good result we had in the league was the conquence of fortuitous circumstances that forced us to play something much simpler. The Liverpool draw also showed they weren't playing badly on purpose; they simply couldn't do better with that system. Dreadful.

Again, if he had half a season in front of him, I'd say we'd have a fairly good chance of staying up. Right now, he can't afford too many mistakes: he's got a seven-question test ahead of him and he needs at least three correct answers to avoid a disaster. He might get them, but it's not a given at all. As we've seen in Madrid, it only takes 15 minutes for a team low on confidence to implode...

Can't remember his exact words, but he made it clear in his interview that his usual style wasn't important right now, more about the mentality and getting points on the board or something to that effect....

Sadly I don’t think we should be looking too much into that game about what we are going to be doing.

I don’t think we have games to waste but I’m not expecting much from that game apart from mentality from the players. I want them to be calm, have a little more confidence and professionalism to give it a good go.

If we can undo the individual errors who knows, but again not holding my breath.

I think the carrot for the players would be to be invited to RDZ over the top villa and have a Y front and medallion party if we beat the drop.

That would get me going! Special invites for Steed Malbranque to give a motivational speech in his Y fronts before the Sunderland game.

I meant across the board not just tactically, we need wins, how we get them and how we look is going to be massively important be it motivated or running through walls. Ultimately something has to give if we are to stay up, what that looks like is going to be interesting

Strasse?
Surely it's his strada.

Tactically I expect nothing in these 7 games.

What I do expect is a turnaround in desire and mentality. And I expect him to give us the best chance possible by playing players in their correct positions in a basic consistent formation for 7 games.
Haven’t seen Archie play in goal so far …. Give it a go I say.

I hope we can talk about football soon.

There's no rule forbidding tangents on this forum. And there is no weird mod culture where we tell people what to talk about. So that hope defo doesn't belong on GG. The tangents are what make this place special, coupled with freedom to.offend. Sorry lad. This isn't 1984
