Who would you want as the new Director of Football?

Lots of people stay the Stutgart manager is really good and one we should have on our list, their sporting director looks to be Christian Gentner but he's an ex player who got promoted up and is only 39 and 18 months into the job so not sure he's someone that would leave but maybe look at taking both of them.

Samu has done his ACL…
Did shomebody say Shamu?

In France and Germany, they've been using that kind of structure for a long, long time. PSQatar killed the Ligue 1, but the Bundesliga is still fairly competitive and, in recent years, it's been a decent proving ground for lots of decent/quality coaches. I don't follow football as closely as I used to but that's where I'd start looking first.

We're still a fairly good name and a decent stepping stone for someone looking to make a name for themselves in the Premier League, so it'd be worth a look.

Each club have their own constraints but I feel the Bundesliga is where we could find models we could emulate.

I feel like this Director of Football role or Sporting Director is so overplayed.

If you look at the clubs above us that have done well in the Premiership, or performed above their level, it’s always been primarily influenced by the Manager or the Ownership. Michael Edwards at Liverpool is the only example in English football where the DoF has had the same level of influence over a one success as the manager.

Manchester United’s success in the 90’s & 2000’s was primarily down to Ferguson with support from Martin Edwards. Woolwich was down to Wenger with support from David Dein. Chelsea was down to Abramovic pumping a load of money in.

City was the same they threw money at the wall and sometimes it stuck until Pep came along and anyone in a DoF role there is just doing what Pep wants.

Even now legohead Arteta is the most influential figure at Arsenal. They have had Edu and the bloke from Barcelona they love now but it’s still Arteta who is in charge.

Villa have had recent success but it’s primarily driven by Emery. Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth etc it’s all based on their owners directive and the manager & DoF are just following their lead and operating within the model and culture they want.
yeah but we broke a few proven managers and even experienced managers from the premier league look worse with us, despite increasing spending in transfers.

paratici coming in improved us immediately too.

however, player wages has always been significantly uncompetitive and I feel that getting that competitive for the ambition we want is more important than the dof

I’d say that’s down to the ownership. We also didn’t improve until the proven elite manger came in replacing the terrible fit he recommended. And he only signed 1 good player that summer.
