Xavi Simons

Xavi has skills and tricks and I am sure that we will see them soon
His real challenge is to maintain his presence and intensity throughout the whole game
He will be great when we defend deep and need a quick transition

A quiet thread, eh?!

Looked a bit meh/isolated and like he should be in the middle, orchestrating.

OBVIOUSLY will grow into things and be a key player, he is clearly a good player, but today was rather stifled.

Would like to see him be a bit more Billy Big Boll*cks and make things happen. In the first half it was awful seeing VdV pass to Spence pass to VdV pass to Spence pass to VdV pass to Spence pass to VdV pass to Spence pass to VdV pass to Romero pass to VdV pass to Spence.

Neither him or Bergvall dropped deeper to get involved in buildup much. Seems like they were playing to instructions?

Some good stuff, some meh, decent debut.

I thought he looked good in the first half when we got him the ball. Linked up well with Spence and was looking to move forward with the ball.

But we were very slow in the build up. And I would like to see him in behind the striker at some point, but a solid debut from him.

There was one moment where he played a no look reverse pass into the box down the left but no one was there to run onto it. He was assuming Spence would be there, it will take a while for it to click but once they are used to playing with each other he could be deadly. The pass would have been world class if Spence was on his wave length. I assume Simons was used to someone making those runs at Leipzig.

To be fair, Spence normally is in that position. Just the 1 time he wasn't.

I thought he looked quite good as well, but I wanted to see him more in the middle in that 10 role. There was space for him there to exploit. He did link up nicely with Spence quite a few times though.

There's a bit of a modric thing going on in that out wide probably the best place for a foreign new attacking player to the PL who isnt physically the biggest/strongest. I'm sure his longer term position will be in the centre

Imagine having his football talents and also being fluent in 4 languages at 22! Impressive young man.

I look forward to Xavi eventually being deployed as a 10.

He was a lucky boy yesterday, he was lucky he did not get a second yellow.
Definitely. No doubting his quality, will be interesting to see how he can express that over the coming months as he settles in.

Particularly with Kulusevski and Maddison out already looking a key figure for us. Really hope he settles in quickly.
He was equally unlucky that he got a first. So probably the right result overall.
This is true. But it's also true that when already on a yellow and we're one up in a close game don't give the ref a decision like that to make in a situation like that.

There's an argument for that. Equally, if you take a few % of intensity off of all our booked players, it could be the difference in a close game like that.
