He isnt going to a team in this country challenging for the title in the role he plays … they have players there already doing better
And no one abroad can pay that fee
His statement is just like Cunhas was when he signed the new wolves contract

I mean that if MGW joined us, the next step up would be a Madrid or a club of that ilk. Basically the clubs that are spending 80m plus on their signings. That’s the next step from us. And I agree that we *should* be a step up from Forest.
 
So was there or wasn’t there a release clause? If there was one would we have any sort of pull in taking legal action?
 
Their owner is such a weird unit. Can just picture him in the office, scribing what to put in the releases:

Good luck to MGW. Would have been a good signing, but hardly one that's going to cause me to meltdown.
 
I think my big conclusion from this saga is that the news landed with the fans today but our club probably moved on 7-10 days ago. This is just the real news catching up with the inside knowledge Spurs had on the outcome. That means we'll be working on another comparative deal somewhere.

Personally, I would have thought that MGW would have had more ambition than to sign a new deal, even though it is in reality just a one year extension with better salary.

So is it all in for Wharton next?

Yeah, I find the way he does PR to be quite cringe and not exactly to my taste, but he’s fighting for his club and the metric he will be judged on is does he win these battles, and does he improve the club’s standing. I think you have to say in these aspects right now he’s done really well, and you have to say fair flipping play.

Hope so! Not sure what all of the decent journos with Spurs connections saying ‘we still expect this to get done’ were talking about in that case, but yeah I hope we have a plan to move on from this. A very strange saga.

Basically I feel like: if this was an important deal for us, we’ve been thoroughly embarrassed. If it wasn’t that important and we’re gonna move quickly to the next target, then it was a punt that didn’t work out.
 
Gibbs agent played a blinder. New contract 20% cut, and no release clause.

No doubt Gibbs is the best paid player at the club.

Was obvious from the point when he never stated that he wanted to move, or put in a transfer request.

I would say the complete opposite. The Nuno confrontation thing, complaints about referees and other incidents make him look a fool.

So they kept a player they didn’t want to sell. Happens every other week. Move on, we’ll sign someone else.

Yeah, as I said the way Maranakis operates is not necessarily to my taste. But it’s undeniable he has won a round here.

A club that were in the Championship not too long ago has successfully resisted a ‘release clause met, medical booked, deal basically done’ story and retained their best player. That does not happen every other week. It’s a massive win for him. Roles reversed I’d be delighted. And I think it’s ok to acknowledge it.

The only way this remotely looks ok from a Spurs perspective is if we were never that interested. And threw in a cheeky bid because we thought it would be a good deal, and have other targets to quickly go after.

That throws up a whole load of other questions of are we actually targeting the right level of player to seriously move the club upwards. But at least it would mean we hadn’t been completely and utterly outplayed by Forest and wouldn’t mean we wasted two weeks on a deal for a player that was never that bothered about joining us in the first place.

But just reading your post again…all those PR battles he does…I agree he looks like a fool. It doesn’t mean anything though if he successfully progresses Forest’s standing as a club. It’s undeniable he has done that, and this particular episode shows he’s winning the micro battles to keep his positive contribution going.
