***OMT*** Tottenham Hotspur v Bodø/Glimt*** Europa League Semi-Final Second-Leg Thursday May 8th, KO 8pm

Did you see him vs Brazil… that’s for his country…
He has it in him which is why he isn’t elite

I mean we can sit here all day naming bad games that even the very best players in the world have had, VVD should have been sent off versus us the League Cup Semi first leg and was pretty poor that game and he is a generational best defender I have seen in 10 years.

I will leave it there, not here to change peoples minds on this stuff TBF, had my say and stick by it, in a modern game where there are 3/4 Elite defenders he is a very very good defender just under that, getting rid for the sake of a few anecdotal issues and rhetoric would be idiotic IMO

He is miles away from VVD
Not for talent or ability but mentality
Romero has elite capabilities
I’m trying think of a sports car that js super fast but breaks down regularly. That’s Romero for me
Until he turns up hand after game with the same mentality he will never reach the level his skill set could achieve
That’s how VVD has got there
That’s how Ferdinand got there
Terry
King
Campbell

I never said he was near VVD, I was giving an example of how the best have bad moments.

As I said in the other thread, he was arguably the best defender in the league 21/22 and then won the world cup, thats a fairly decent level to reach.

I agree he has faults, but I think the majority of footballers we all covert relentlessly do, there isn't a player we are linked with in a window that people don't want us to sign without actually knowing their strengths and weaknesses, so the idea we just flip a Romero and get someone better, I just don't trust the judgement people use to come to that conclusion.

I’ve seen every game he has played for us
He has to address his availability issues which we will see
Then he has to show consistency again
We saw him play brilliantly last season too don’t forget
As I’ve said, he has the tools but I’m yet to see the brains to match regularly

He was hot headed under Conte but was defensively tremendous. Was literally in everyone that wrote about the PL team of the year in his first year, in fact he might have even been in the PL team of the year.

2021/2022 he was probably the best CB in the league, he then won the World Cup, 2023/2023 by 30 metrics for a defender he came out 2nd only to VVD in the league and BTW I think VVD is huge levels above him so thats not a comparison.

He is in this pattern, which I admit I do to Porro now, of everything is magnified "ohhh he is an idiot" "ohhhh he is so sh1t".....when the reality is somewhere probably more grounded than fan emotion, even I can admit that with my views

Hot headed, yes, rash, absolutely, a very very good defender.....most certainly
We are just going to go round in circles with this one, can only express my opinion on him mate. For me all top defenders, you can hang your hat on nine times out of ten are going to put on a top solid performance. With Romero you don't know what you're going to get, fans are constantly worried that he is going to do something that hurts us - sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't.

On his day he is a top defender, but all too often it is not one of those days. His availability issues doesn't help either. FWIW I still think he's our best defender, but he is not in the top bracket until he can put in performances like he has done the past couple of games consistently.....

The second part I wholly agree on

I think the other parts we can agree to an extent, but I do believe people over egg the consistency part because A) his injuries ant therefore availability and B) His red cards, but again I can't take some people serious as there were calls for us in large numbers on here to sign a 79 year old Ramos for PSG............

On that bombshell I have a fortnight of accounting to do or I won't have earned my weekend beers

The last part is the key
Not good doing a great game in a semi but giving a goal away vs wolves

His red cards are a myth
He really hasn’t had that many
It’s a Carragher/Neville churn
But last week, for no reason, he did a reckless, naive, non footballing foul that should have been a red. No idea why. He was up against a guy who was weak as tinkle and he smashed him with his arm in a move a wrestler would admire. That’s the difference between him and a top top player.

It's quite funny really that our defence is so bad but the best teams in the world would undoubtedly see our best 3 players as Romero, VDV and Porro. So many of them would want these three.

I personally feel a little sorry for Romero. It is a little bit like berating a tricky winger for having poor passing stats. Of course they're not going to be as good as the guys who just pass sideways and backwards. Romero is really brave in the way he plays and always takes on the extra responsibilities for the team. Ange's tight offside line is by no means suited to him but is incredibly disciplined around it most of the time even though he knows he'd rather be dropping in and intercepting. That has been a tough transition for him, and if he leaves he won't miss the way Ange organises his defence. You'll see him shine more in another defensive setup.

In Conte set up he was absolutely fine, the issue for any defender in this set up is they are often in 2 v 2 running races and being hit with constant diagonal balls in behind the FBs either aerially or on the floor, its so high risk beyond any way others set up defensively. Last night proved when you have decent CM coverage and the FBs are not inverted. MVDV is young and has loads to learn and progress with BUT I think we are exposing him too much at times and the ultra reliance on his pace is hurting him more than one way, but I see it with him too on here an social "he isn't actually very good"..........I mean come on now, lets keep some perspective

Basically he's a a Alfa Romero ;)

Work finished late so I missed the 1st half. I've said about feeling a disconnection this season so to become ecstatic all of a sudden when the going is good is a bit flimflam, so I think I'm being a tad guarded.

That said, hugging / high giving random Spurs fans in the pub for Dom and Porro's goal felt nice after the season as a whole. What a perplexing situation, and whilst I just hope we give a good account of ourselves against United, I want us to win Kevin Keegan levels. Oh the inevitable heartbreak if we go out with a whimper...

Richy to score a late winner in the final using his arse, cementing his legendary status, causing outcry from the naysayers as he gets a statue at the stadium before Kane does.
