Cristian Romero

If anyone offers 50 mill we should take it.
Hes poor in the air, and is always out of position or ballwatching. First and foremost we need solid cbs who are goos at... you know, defending!
I think that will be the max anyone will offer and we won’t sell
We value him higher because there is a belief he is elite … he believes it himself

Give Romero the latitude to mark players, sweep up behind the defence and use his natural instincts to defend and he's elite with perhaps the exception of in the air.

Put him in a rigid offside system where first thought is to stay put and hold the line and you don't see the natural player that Romero is.

Offside is for when we hold a high line. It is not for the times we are using it in deep positions. Romero is suffering as much as the rest of them for the coaches instructions.

He won the world cup playing alongside a 34 year old Otamendi. The pair of them just defended orthodoxly and brilliantly. I'd like to see more of that at Spurs.

Well who knows, someone might offer more. He clearly wants to leave. What did he cost us 47 mill? We should bite the hand off any club who offers around that tbh.
I did rate him until Ange took over and he has been average since then, when he's fit that is.

I do not believe for one second we are asking him not to mark people
He won the World Cup because they had the best player in the world elevating the team (playing and leadership) and even then they did end up lucky in that final (Martinez save/France misses). And international football is a poor standard to judge a player on
I watch him play a good game then next game he switches off. The goal wolves scored from his fudge up wasn’t because we played offside was it? That was him sweeping up

His issues are nothing to do with playing offside. He can be world class one week and like a pub player the next.
He constantly leaves players unmarked, just walking off players he's supposed to be marking. He goes chasing balls instead of holding his position leaving huge holes in the defence (made worse at times with fbs pushed on). He makes rash decisions and flies into challenges that there is no need for. He believes he is better than he is and gives off the impression that he feels playing for us is beneath him. When he is up for a game, like against Frankfurt, he is brilliant. Unfortunately, those games are too rare at this stage.

You have to admit though that to mark a player and get goal side you are breaking the line? That's the challenge. I see it week in, week out with our defenders. The best they can do is be either left or right of the marker, but they are not coached to be behind them so they can switch left or right in an instant. That means the ball on the other side leaves them vulnerable. They also struggle when the ball is played on the other side to where they are marking. I'm not talking about high line defending either. Those are the instructions even on our own penalty spot.

I've watched this one closely for a while. It's not a good look for Ange's coaches.

Watch more closely. Even check out the second goal on Sunday. Mass confusion from our defenders on the penalty spot line. Romero holds a line and makes a little step up. VDV is a yard deeper and should have been on the pivot in a normal season. He knows he must not do that in this setup.

Literally, the players are being drilled to hold the tightest of lines in the wrong places. It is scrambling their heads in the moment and contributing massively to the individual errors.

I've been watching this aspect of our team for a while. Could do with a few more of you narrowly focusing on it with the same lens. It's massively worrying.

I'd take 30m. This is the perfect time to sell, but we have to accept most clubs are a bit short on money. It's either that or offer him so much money that he'll stay, but not really want to be here, or allow him to run down his contract in the hope he'll eventually change his mind.

What is the excuse for Romero under Conte? What @DubSpur describes pre dates Ange being here. He has never been reliable in his 4 seasons here, always on edge he is going to do something stupid and more often than not he does. We have been spoilt with some genuine top class CBs in recent years who you knew 8 or 9 times out of 10 will put in a solid performance. With Romero you are just hoping it's one of his good days....

Nah
He literally loves not marking anyone
It’s his forte
He passes the player off he she be marking or more os he just watches play
He even does the same thing for Argentina
I’ve never see a CB abscond that role as much as him and I’ve seen some bad ones
He plays like he is in a 3 but obviously isn’t
I just think the first choice CBs aren’t actually very good defenders. Both have a few elite characteristics but amateur level weaknesses too

The second goal on Sunday was nothing to do with playing offside. It was poor closing down for the cross and then VdV doesn't go with his man. He's actually touching Woods at one stage but for some unknown reason just stands still while Woods takes a couple of steps away from him in between the two CBs. I've lost count of the amount of goals we've conceded this season due to defenders switching off and not staying with their man in situations like that.

I think everyone has been watching this aspect of the team for the whole season, you just need to change to the correct lens.

I’ve heard he plays so well for his country but he was brilliant and awful vs Brazil giving them the goal, and it’s a poor standard
For us, when he wants to play the smart game… he can be outstanding
But that’s not frequent enough
And it’s not tactical set up that highlights his stupidness

Yeah, but you're making the assumption that it's either column A or column B. It's not. It's both. I'm not saying Romero isn't fallible. I'm saying that Ange's offside strategy in deeper positions isn't helping any of these guys to find theie peak.

The worst defending I saw at the weekend was VDV. When he had to use his brain rather than his pace and strength, he just froze.

Those top quality defenders you talk about amount to about 2 recent players - Toby and Jan. Prior to that we had King, Gallas, Naybet and Woodgate. Way back we had Gough. So few centre halves that had great defensive brains. Our stereotypical defender has been guys like Dawson. Very few over about 4 decades that I've been supporting the club.

I dont think Levy would accept that mate, but maybe his hand isnt on the tiller any more 😅
