Euro 2024 - The European Football Championship

Daisuk

Andy Thompson
Starts in a couple of weeks. Kicks off on June 14th with the host Germany against Scotland. I have to say I hope England does well this time and go all the way, but of course not putting any money on it.

I reckon either Germany, Spain or France to win it, but I don't really know much about International football. Who do you think will win it?

Yeah, anyone got a feel for the form teams/dark horses?

These are PaddyPower's odds, but of course England will be skewed by nationalistic bets, and the rest probably based on history?:

England 4.0
France 4.5
Germany 5.0
Spain 8.0
Portugal 8.5
Italy, Belgium 17.0
Netherlands 19.0
Denmark, Croatia 41.0
Serbia 67.0
Austria, Turkey, Switzerland 81.0
Ukraine 101.0
Hungary 126.0
Czech Republic, Scotland 176.0
Poland 251.0
Romania 301.0
Slovakia, Georgia, Slovenia, Albania 501.0

By FFT's reckoning, 5/1 odds are quite good considering Germany are the hosts and have a long history in the tournament. Plus, at Euro 2020, the winners were the best-coached team. We'd expect Nagelsmann to be the best manager at this edition.

This is our pick to bet on: and not because Portugal have great players but big-game players. They're a dark horse – duh, that's why they're worth betting on – but Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, etc. are used to the big stage far more than so-called 'better' squads: and Martinez has a far better grip on these egos than his predecessor, Fernando Santos. Frankly, 8/1 are unmissable odds for a nation that absolutely blitzed qualifying.

Led by Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai, Hungary were one of the first teams to book their place at Euro 2024 following an impressive qualifying campaign. They're stubborn and aggressive, with their performance in the 2022/23 Nations League showing they not only compete with but beat Europe's best. Hungary have beaten Turkey and Serbia (twice) over the past year.

The appointment of Ralf Rangnick who, after a difficult start to his reign, oversaw Austria's progression into Euro 2024. Rangnick has done an excellent job of building a connection with supporters, and national team interest will doubtlessly peak during the tournament.
The ideals typically associated with the German have evolved Austria from a dull, insipid unit under Franco Foda into an exuberant one.
After failing to deliver on the big international stage at the last two Euros, Austria are well-placed to land a killer blow or two in Germany.

France have got the depth and the smarts to win it
Spain have been in great form
England have the talent but not the guy in charge
Germany at home….
Then there will always be an underdog

It's crazy that Ronaldo will likely play in his sixth (!) Euros.

Hopefully he will be crying as he trundles off pitch after getting knocked out in the group stages. It wouldn’t surprise me if he keeps playing until he’s 75 as he’s obsessed with trying to catch Messi and win a World Cup.

You can never rule out teams like Italy who know how to get the job done. Germany also as hosts will be dangerous even if they are in transition. I still think talent wise it’s probably only France who can compete with us but I just doubt Southgate’s ability to let the handbrake off and we can’t get over the line against the big boys when it matters.

6th June and both are not in the EC so why exactly are they playing a ridiculous and pointless friendly
The players should be on the beach

This time tomorrow Germany Vs Scotland will already have kicked off.

Is there just a lack of enthusiasm for this? Even up in Scotland where it's their first tournament for a while there just doesn't feel there is a buzz

Really, I had to stop listening to the radio several times due to all the Scotland hype this week! Everyone is going on about how they should be getting out if this group etc! I can see them easily not winning a game against these 3 sides.
Besides that, I've got 2 boys so I guess we are more hyped than usual. They have their wallcharts all ready lol
