Re: VDV admits to diving

Anyone else see this? admitted to diving in a recent hamburg match to win them a penalty. Hmmmm and he beat up his wife in the summer, if an arsenal player had done this we would have had a field day and gone to town on them.

I am not seeing him in the same light anymore, always felt he was quite honest at spurs.

Don't condone hitting a woman unless she's trying to seriously hurt/kill you.

Fair play to him for having the cojones to admit diving. I think close to 95% of players these days would take a tumble if it lead to a positive outcome for their team.

My main issue with diving is football fans defending their own for doing it, but crucifying other teams players for doing the same thing. Either have a go at all of them or none of them.

Takes the fun out of it. That's for Rugby fans.

Rafael Van der Vaart was always likely to return to Hamburg for the end of his career so him moving back to the Bundesliga was never really a surprise. That he went as soon as last summer and left Tottenham aged just 29 was perhaps a little more odd and when rumours first started about a return to Hamburg last summer, many Spurs fans laughed them off as press speculation.

Van der Vaart has spoken this week to Voetbal International (see left) about his transfer and why it was the right time to go, and he's explained that he just didn't feel a big enough part of the new Tottenham manager's plans. The comments from him may be slightly disingenuous because in Germany they'd been reporting a chance of him going to Hamburg even before Villas Boas took over. The gist at the time was that he wanted to be closer to his wife, but that hasn't proved to be a good thing for the couple who have now separated after a public fight.

"With Villas Boas I had a false start. While with HSV I just felt as though she really needed me... It was a club in need. And I wanted to help.

"During our first conversation (with AVB) he hinted that I had to fight for my place. That in itself is not a problem. I have enough confidence in my abilities. But until that time I was 'the guy' at The Spurs. The contrast with the way Villas-Boas saw it, it was just too big. The club had just bought Sigurdsson who had an advantage, the coach said himself.

"In the same period HSV knocked at the door again. Villas Boas came around shortly afterwards and changed his opinion of me, apparently it was not so smooth with Sigurdsson, but then I had already made my choice. About the club I have no evil words, the atmosphere was great, we had a good team, there is a club being built."

The Dutchman has had a good return with Hamburg but has been hampered by injury, something that has followed his career to a certain degree. Sigurdsson has been used primarily as a substitute and only started 6 Premier League games, but at 23 he has time to improve on that.

Ha - cheers for posting, great to read this

Personally, I think every play was told they 'need to fight for their place' - not sure why that was a determining factor although I can uderstand his 'reservations' about Sigurdsson

I think Redknapp had promised VDV that he would start every match when fit to convince him to sign for us. That was why he started almost every match last season even when he was out of form. I think AVB didn't want to promise VDV about his first 11 place.

I said all along he didn't want to leave. None of the quotes at the time suggested he wanted to leave, and yet a lot of posters at the time tried to dig out any quote they could find that absolved AVB of any wrongdoing.

Lucky we have Holtby now, but it was still the wrong decision at the time to get rid of him.

GHod knows... Sounds like it was all very amicable but some posters try to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

How is this AVB's wrongdoing?

It's clear AVB saw Sig as the main man in that position rather than VDV. Look, I've changed my opinion of AVB, I needed to be persuaded he was the right man for us, but he's proved me wrong thankfully. However, that doesn't mean every decision he makes is right. I think he got it wrong in this instance, that's just my view.

How is that 'clear'?

He simply informed him he'd have to earn his place first (something which you applauded vehemently in the Lloris/Brad debacle) and then proceeded to state he now might have some competition for that place.

I suppose this poses an interesting question - would Gareth Bale progress as rapidly as he's done this season if Rafael van der Vaart was still at Spurs?

Perhaps we'll never be 100% certain, but I feel that Bale has stepped-up in a way that would not have been possible if VDV had been playing.

AVB also quite honestly informed Daws that he wouldn't be guaranteed a first-team place either. Instead of demanding a move because he was no longer the 'number one', he knuckled down and forced his way back into the side, and consequently both gained AVB's respect and gained respect for AVB's willingness to pick on form, not on a personal basis. Indeed, apparently AVB came back later on and indicated he'd changed his mind on Sigurdsson's immediate selection, but by then Rafa was unwilling to countenance a climb-down.

There are different ways to react to a situation like that, mate, and in my opinion AVB was blameless. Again, just my opinion.

I don't know if I buy what he said as the whole story.

It now seems very likely that he was having marital problems, it was rumoured at the time that he wanted to move back to Germany to be close to his family. It seems very likely that this was at least part of the reason why he left.

From the Dawson thread, but about VdV so thought i would answer here instead to stop the derail:

Wrong thread for a VdV discussion but GHod we miss that guys goal threat these days!

http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Tottenham_Hotspur_Players_Statistics_2011-12.html

Last season VdV scored a goal every 216 minutes.

http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Tottenham_Hotspur_Players_Statistics_2012-13.html

This season Dempsey has scored a goal every 273 minutes.

Not a massive difference. Not saying Dempsey is as good as VdV, but for pure output in terms of goals they're not far apart, other than that they have very different strengths so it's difficult to compare.

For the record, at Hamburg this season VdV has 3 goals and 5 assists in 17 games. (http://www.whoscored.com/Players/4343/)

[...] would Bale be in the positions he is in if VDV was in the side?

I was thinking the same. Not sure if Bale will have full freedom to roam if and when we buy a top striker.

I think this is an interesting point. I'm not sure VdV would have been as willing (or able) to switch wide left like Dempsey, Sig and Holtby have been willing to, or been able to put in the defensive shift down that side when we have to defend allowing Bale to stay forward to attack on the break.

This.

As for 6061's question, no, I don't think Bale could've played inside like he has been with VdV in the side. In another thread I mentioned how the whole structure of the side looks currently designed to offer him the space to work when he's playing through the middle, and VdV usually liked to assume that free floating role behind a striker. So no, I don't think it would've worked. Of course, Rafa probably would've netted a few himself, but I don't think he'd have worked as hard as either Dempsey, Sigurdsson or Holtby do when they're on the pitch. A fine player, but...

i don't see anything wrong with that parting. AVB was saying the right thing. And typically you need push and pull factors to initiate a move. Not at all one-sided, VDV wasn't pushed out of the club or sidelined by the manager.

And also contrast with how Dawson provides a different response when under the same circumstance, decides to stay and fight and succeeds.

Was sad to see Rafa go however couldnt see how he would fit into AVB's preferred formation. And even though we haven't yet gone to 4-3-3, with Bale now playing centrally he still doesnt fit in. Got a decent price for him - unfortunately, sometimes a decent player doesnt suit a new manager. It happens. Shame because he was one of my favourites however the club is bigger than any one player and things move on
