*** Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United OMT ***

Why Rose? He was probably our MotM and the one who looked like he gave a crud. Trying to play with Chadli in front of you must be so frustrating.

I know, I personally want him in there, and he deserves to be, yet he's been the focus of much debate in here. So in the relative context of this forum, get Davies in there, and Fazio, and Townsend and Chadli out. Would then be interesting to hear the analysis of the other players. Hoping that Ade's re-appearance doesn't side track any of that, too.

Very annoyed ! More annoyed with this humiliation than the League Cup final defeat ! It looks like the Old Tottenham is back ! The one who would always be scared of playing ManU and would always give up even before meeting them ! AVB worked so hard to change our mentality against ManU and he did so brilliantly by beating them at their place. Sherwood did well to continue that last season. And now Pochettino has thrown away all that instantly ! Before this match, we had our longest unbeaten run of 5 games against ManU since 1974. And if we had avoided defeat, it would have been our longest unbeaten run against ManU since 1921. Pochettino had a chance to put his name into history books but he has now wasted all that.

Pochettino has to take the full blame for this humiliation as he prepared the team, picked youth over experience and they failed him badly. This match proves kids don't always win you games, especially against big team away from home. Just like the League Cup final, almost all the youngsters freezed in front of the big crowd. There were bad games from the likes of Mason, Bentaleb and Dier. Even Kane had a really bad game. Hope Pochettino will learn a lesson from this that you need experienced players when you play big teams away.

Despite the loss, would have been somewhat satisfied if Kane had scored to continue his goal scoring run in away matches. But we hardly looked like scoring and didn't have any shot on target until late in the match. And Kane wasted that only chance when his tame shot didn't trouble their goalie. He really should have scored that one-on-one chance. Or maybe he should have passed to Eriksen who was unmarked on the left. The goal would not have made any difference so late in the match. But atleast it could have given a chance to Kane to go for the away goal record currently held by RVP. Similiarly, really disappointed Eriksen didn't have a good game. He should have done better with a chance in the 2nd half. He should have shot at goal but dribbled too much until it was lost.

Annoyingly, we made ManU look like Brazil. We were so poor that we made them look great. We lost this match in midfield. They completely outclassed us due to the fact they dominated the midfield from start to finish. I had always felt the inexperienced Mason and Bentaleb will get outplayed by the more experienced ManU midfield and that's what happened. It is disappointing that Pochettino didn't start the more experienced pair of Dembele and Stambouli in midfield. By the time he replaced Townsend with Dembele in the 30th min, the game was already lost. Both Mason and Bentaleb were in panicky mode throughout the match. It was Bentaleb's stupid back pass that allowed them to score the killer 3rd goal. Mason had one great chance to score or pass in the 2nd half but wasted it.

Not at all surprised our defence conceded 3 goals. We have been conceding goals almost non-stop this season. The key mistake Pochettino did in this match was starting the inexperienced Dier instead of the more experienced Fazio. Dier simply couldn't handle the pressure and was at fault for all the 3 goals they scored. He was either too slow to tackle or close down the ManU players for all the 3 goals. Dier should be embarassed for letting a player like Fellaini beat him for the 1st goal. It was annoying Carrick had a free header for the crucial 2nd goal. And it was really embarassing the way Rooney west past 4 of our players to score the 3rd goal. Don't understand why no one tackled him. Our defending have really got worse under Pochettino this season.

Looking at the way we went down tamely to ManU, I think we will need a miracle to finish in top 4 now. But I am more annoyed that we lost our unbeaten record to ManU. It took us so many years of humiliation to finally beat ManU in 2013. Now we have thrown it all away. Not sure how long it will take us to beat ManU again.

Like I said, within the relative context of this discussion forum such as it is, I want Townsend, Chadli, and Rose benched. (Unfortunately, Ade has made an appearance which will side track things). Its kinda like when you go to the races and the bookies on the track open a book and odds where you can bet everyone but the favourite in the race. And then, the debate and discussion will get more interesting and certainly more focused in here.

But aside from making some obtuse and 'clever' comments, what do YOU think? I've noticed an interesting pattern in your discussion posts, which is rather than just wear it on your sleeve and express yourself freely (in the hopeful knowledge that most people will happily discuss WITH you as opposed to chip away AT you) instead you'd rather make glib sideways references to criticisms you obviously disagree with, yet seem very reluctant to discuss. No-one is here to 'win' a debate mate, I certainly am not, as you quite rightly point it, this is a discussion forum...so please, share your open thoughts. What's the worst that can happen mate? In the spirit of both debate and trying to find out exactly what you DO think.

Having had time to reflect I really don't think we should be too downhearted after that game. We bounced back brilliantly from the disappointment of elimination from the Europa and the defeat at Wembley by winning our next two league games in quick succession but sooner or later it was all going to catch up with us. Don't forget we've come out of a very intense run of critical, high-value fixtures, and two a week at that. We've played several games more than all other PL clubs this season so I for one am prepared to cut the team some slack. United came at us like a tornado and maybe it was just one game too much.

So reactionary.
So simple to blame inexperience.
It's wraps what went wrong with the game up in one neat little easy to understand package.
Let's get rid of young team we are building because they are inexperienced?
Stambouli should have played instead of Mason? They are the same age ffs.

The mess was right back. Walker is experienced. It doesnt add up.
Inexperienced Kane did nothing wrong and our youngest player Bentaleb had a good second half.

Are you honestly going into meltdown after we lost against away at United who played great and we had an absolute nightmare. You are talking about the huge error in not playing 'our experienced players' when you are calling for Fazio, Demebele and Stambouli who have been up and down this year to put it kindly.

With Pochettino we finally have a team who have a passion for spurs, are young, dynamic and exciting. A young team will have ups and downs and the fact is that they have had far more ups than the gonads experienced pros who litter our bench on big wages and dubious talent..... you come across like a new fan who has been seduced by the likes of big spending clubs and have zero patience or trust in young players.

I was disgusted by the first 45mins yesterday, but considering how transformed our club has been since the likes of Mason, Bentelab, Kane etc came into the side I will cut them some slack. Your email strikes me as an emotional one in which you are gutted that our top 4 hopes are basically over..... so fudging what - as a club we aren't ready for the Champions League - if we played there next year we would be embarrassed like Liverpool were this season. We have 10 deadweights in our squad that we somehow have to try and shift and then we need to bring in some quality to sit alongside some more academy players to come through. This is a big task and to build something good will take time, but we are genuinely on the right tracks

Well that was sobering. Biggest positive was we only conceded three, looked on course to be six or seven.

Nobody in lilywhite performed well, and that hurts. I've seen a few people say Rose did well - he didn't, he just wasn't as bad as the rest. That's partly cos we weren't targeted down our left hand side as much as our right.

Walker, Bentaleb, Dier, Vertonghen, Mason, Eriksen and Chadli all utter fudging cack. A worrying trend for most of them in big games. People are alot more optimistic this season and I'm on board with that, we actually have some identity and it's great seeing academy players given a go. But like last season we remain abject in the big away games. For last season's 6-0 loss at City (4-1), 4-0 at Chelsea (3-0), 4-0 at Liverpool (3-0 at United). We could have easily lost by more at Anfield and Arsenal on another day could have got three or four in our draw at their gaff. Yes the Chelsea and Arsenal results and performances were wonderful, but I'm worried they will be exceptions rather than the norm.

People saying we did well second half are clutching at straws. United took their foot off the gas. They used us as a warm up for their game next week and that stings cos we allowed it.

^ If you're gonna say that we could have lost by more against Liverpool away then i think it's only fair to say we could just as easily have nicked the win at The Emirates and that the City away result was incredibly harsh.

Swings and roundabouts...

I agree with your overall point about not getting too disheartened about not likely reaching top 4, BUT I wholeheartedly disagree about us 'not being ready as a club for CL'.
What does that even mean? Were we ready in 2010-11 and Bale real breakout season? Yes, we had more talent in that squad but far far more random tactical management/awareness.
I just hope the players/club don't think the same. CL is not the be-all and end-all of that I agree but saying we 'are not ready' is like saying we should not have bothered to turn up against Chelski in the CC final as we are not on their level anyway (cue the inevitable puns lol)

If we agree this is a "building" season, then we SHOULD play our young players. It's the best learning experience they can get. And let's not forget it was pretty much the same team that thumped Chelsea and made the Arse look unrecognizable. But because we're so close to a top-4, people feel gutted. Were we sitting in 9th position, the reaction would have been much different.

What I don't understand, however, is the inconsistency. How is it possible that a team that played much better at away games earlier in the season, when we weren't as far along in being a proper team, all of a sudden collapses so spectacularly? A team that performed so admirably against Chelsea in the cup final, was so utterly helpless at OT against a struggling United? A team that played so well on 3 days rest looked so leggy after having 8 days to prepare? And finally, a team that created chances and scored goals, was unable to muster a single shot (even if it ended in row Z) in the entire first half?

Something doesn't compute, but I'm not sure what...

Easy to say in hindsight but I was chuffed with the signings we have made

Alas only one will be here next season imo (eriksen)

We cant sell our crap players anyway..it appears..why is Ade still hear..

I think he upset the applecart yesterday by being included in the squad.

We should have kept Ekotto and Sandro IMO..

Sold Siggy...was he an average player?

I'm worried ..Will we ever bring in any real World class players again? if all we can sign
is Fazio....

OK he would be a better player if he did not blatantly foul so much...

Anyway.......season over...

roll on next season's sage LOL

My lovely Spurs are back, where have you been? The last time i saw you was back in December against the chavs where we lost 3 nil as well, surprisingly.

What a poor show. Some of the defending was very very poor, Dier for the third goal, how can professional footballer be so lax ,for a start be facing the wrong way to tackle someone,be nut megged and be pushed away so easily, then the first goal if he couldn't see the gap for Fellaini to go through,he shouldn't be on the pitch. To be honest he shouldn't be in the first team reguarly he should be learning his trade in the under 21's or in the europa cup for a start. He's a good prospect but he needs someone like a King or a Dawson type of figure around him ,Vertonghen isn't that person,he just conentrates on his own game,he's not a natural leader. Walker, there is a debate going on between Rose and Davies,on who should play, but he's sort of slipped under the radar,he's in comfort zone, no pressure on his position what so ever ,some of his passing was so shoddy, how many times did he give the ball away in crucial areas, jesh, got a feeling he be on his way in the summer,he's in the age bracket now that Levy sells players,if a villa /Saudi Sportswashing Machine come in for him for £8 million levy will sell him, thats his policy.
One shot in 90 mins and that was in the 88th minute,Kane looks he can do with a break but more useful some help,he's up there on his own, chasing four defenders,he spends far more energy running around and when he gets the ball he's too knackered to do anything.
We could say its a one off yeterday but it hasn't been, its been there all season since we played Emirates Marketing Project back in October, being steamrollered by bigger and stronger sides. The problem with MP style of a high intensity pressurizing game you can do it for a some specific games or for the first few months of the season but too keep doing for 38+ games in a season, after a while players will get weary, drained and lethargic and that was the case yeterday.Didn't Southampton lose their way around this period playing the same style? It crossed my mind after watching us against QPR last week something was up,if they could have finished like man ure did yesterday they would have beaten us but they missed some sitters.

To be honest comparing our squads to the rest of the top 6 is like comparing men against boys,we have on the surface a very good team but on the underbelly we are still weak and soft. So the onus is again with Levy/lewis will they give MP the money to spend on 4/5 very experience players we clearly need, people who have knowledge and few international caps or will it be as usual give the manager a token star player to sell season tickets and memberships and a couple of promising youngsters, its Sydney or the bush now Mr Levy

In part you have answered you own question playing youngsters is a good thing and is the way forward, however young players do have peaks and troughs far more then older more experienced players do. A lot of our young players ( Mason, Bentelab, Kane, Dier ) are in their first full season and sooner or later the chances were they would struggle, the fact that we have so many in the team it shows up more.

There is an easy way to beat Spurs and that is to put us under a bit of pressure. That's it. That's all you need to do. We can't handle it at all and generally we fall to pieces.

Utd were on us from minute 1, with sometimes 3 or 4 utd players around the Spurs player in possession. They suffocated our game completely and forced us into error after error. It was quite impressive really and though they ran out of steam after about 60 mins the damage had already been done. Mourinho's team do something similar in a lot of matches. They are all over you like a rash for about an hour and then they sit in a defend the lead the usually have.

Good point mate....

We never park the bus..you have to know how to defend..and...
...defend like Fcuck...
in modern football...
we have the weakest in the league..
Its not just the defense..we have to get back in numbers ..everyone other side does it!

Why not us?

I did answer my own question, but partially. If we had played like we did at City or at Chelsea, I would understand. At least in those games we threatened and had some good spells. Against United we did f_ck all all game and they're not as good as the other two AND we played them when our team is further along in its development. Troughs are one thing, but this was complete regression.

It was also 1 game! You cannot regress in 1 game we will get 12-13 points from next 15, we had a bad day. That doesnt undo all the good work, it doesnt mean Ade had a punchup with all the players before the game. It doesnt mean we need to scrap our plan. It means we had a bad day!

Out of curiosity did anyone see their bench yesterday... It was awful and was basically their under 21s

We talk about it being a squad game and clearly we have a small number beyond the first 11 that Poxh wants

When I saw there bench I was stunned. They have spent £160m and still lack anything resembling a squad and look imo weaker than us

Yes they beat us and battered us in that first half. Yes we were atrocious and made them look great but I still wouldn't be surprised to see us finish above them

What I don't understand is the lack of communication between the players on the pitch. Yes the manager is responsible for tactical awareness and for assessing the situation during the game, and acting on that assessment. However the defenders should be talking to each other and the midfield, constantly organising and adjusting. The problem down Walker's side was obvious to the players, yet they allowed it to continue. I would expect them, at the least, to let the manager know they have a problem and it needs sorting, and better still to sort it out themselves.
