The Youth Players/On-Loan Thread 2018/19

Josh Onomah not getting a sniff at Wednesday it seems.
Can’t help but feel he’d be better off coming back and trying to get games with us, rather than rotting in that Yorkshire hell hole...

I had hoped he could become a better version of Sissoko. I mean he could physically develop to be the same and he's technically better, but during my time watching him I've never thought he looked switched on enough when defending. When his side have the ball he has great vision, but for me it's always been his intensity that has worried me.

Excelsior won today with Marcus Edwards spending the 90 minutes on the bench. I think that's the first game he hasn't started for them.

Thats it, I dont doubt Onomahs potential or ability, only ever his mentality.

He doesnt seem to have the mindset to step in and own it, more of a passenger to me.

Always been the same, I hoped for so long he would grow out of it.

Wednesday fans seem very unimpressed, to put it mildly with Josh! - https://www.owlstalk.co.uk/forums/topic/276271-onomah/?tab=comments#comment-8309688
Am I reading that right, the last post in that thread you attached is 20 days ago?

Would love to know how many minutes he’s got because every time I’ve looked at the Wednesday team sheet he’s not on it, or listed as an AM where we know he is pretty useless. Wednesday look like they’re in a right mess this season after challenging for playoffs the last few years. Not sure if they sacked their manager yet or not?

Seems a few are a bit more balanced, but all seem to think he is lazy or holding back.

The loan market rarely works. If a player's worth buying they get bought. The loan market is what's left over.

Oh no mate, is the effect of the Embargo on Wednesday.

In this particular case you could also imagine it could have a negative impact on our current players considering the money he's on as a Premier League reserve. Talented, but you can see he is comfortable with what he already has.

The work rate and concentration just isn't there.

I'm all for not playing our current squad players if they won't pull the weight because they won't be here next year or they aren't good enough due to injury / lack of commitment to staying fit.

From what I saw of Onomah during the Norwich hands he's already made that decision.

You can't blame Jos and Mr C for giving him a chance. Time for someone else to get a shot.

We have too many luxury players in midfield anyway and desperately need more workrate in there.

More money on the Bonfire

Pretty damning. A young player, particularly of his pedigree and ability, should be chomping at the bit to make the most of an opportunity like that.

FWIW...

So 2 assists playing CM when they got 4 points against good sides then benched after the international break and shunted out to AM after that in games the team got hammered in. Knowing how he plays as an AM and the fact they got beat I think the fans reactions are pretty understandable.

Also just gone through that thread on owls talk and it’s 5 pages on his debut against Forest where it’s pretty much 50/50 on whether he was good or bad, then it skips 2 months to the 3rd Nov after their 3rd hammering in a row against Norwich. No wonder they’re not happy.

I’m absolutely not saying he’s gonna make it or anything, just that it’s so obvious he’s a CM yet after a couple of games he gets moved forward. The managers clearly have their reasons for it and that’s an issue for him.

I just think the performances and comments need to be put in to context of the position he plays and the general results of the team (with and without him) that’s all.

Think Onomah will be one of those players like a pritchard who if they choose the right club when they move full time to the championship and will come back up to the prem. When he is in his late 20s he will probably have a good season or two like Drinkwater did. Not a bad player he will just develop and needs lots of game to get there, to many more then we can afford.

The margins are really fine. You've got to be really good to play PL football in the first place but it takes a bit more than that.

This is it in a nutshell for me.

I dont doubt his talent at all, only his desire/mentality/belief - call it what you will.

He has had chances, and never taken them.

And while I understand he plays better at CM, and has often been played AM, I dont think its an excuse.

He always has.

Raises the question though, why, if its his strength, do successive managers move him to AM? Do they not trust him there? Does he not impress enough in training to earn it?
