The youth players/on-loan thread 2014-2015

He's 16, we need him to sign 1st year academy forms which basically means he's committing to us and gives us a level of protection, then when he's 17 in December we can sign him up to a pro contract.

I think I'm more bothered about clubs fishing for players out of our youth setup than I am from the first team.

You just have to hope that the fact that we are showing our youth players that their is a clear route to the first team is enough to enourage them to sign. You can understand the reluctance to go to Emirates Marketing Project, or any club in the EPL top 4 because they don't really give their youth a chance (even Arsenal these days aren't as great as they were). Barcelona however may be able to accomodate him, but a lot of their youth are now leaving to gain more chances at 1st team football.

Musa Yahaya scored and assisted but Nigeria lost 4-2 to Brazil in their opening U20 World Cup game. The assist was actually a rabona through ball so maybe he's been training with Lamela.

Is he definitely our player?

How come he cant get a work permit til then but we have previously had other overseas youngsters in our youth system?

Amazing assist and the gaol was decent too. The future looks bright, but lets hope all of the youngsters stay level headed and carry on developing.

So you're saying we essentially have little to no protection at this point if another club wants him and he's tempted to move?

Can't help thinking that the recent development under both Sherwood and Pochettino showing youngsters that they have a solid path into top level first team football at Spurs and that we are very capable of developing young talents into very good players is a massive benefit in situations like these. Alli (or his previous manager) already mentioned the club's record with younger players as a reason for signing and I think it will help us again in the future.

Can't do much other than try. If, in the end, Barca come in and snap him up I'm not sure if we have a right to be all that upset. Of course I really hope he stays on.

Don't worry. I can't see Edwards going anywhere. He and his family have their feet firmly on the ground and they know that Spurs have been (and will continue to be) very good for his development.

Carter Vickers had a good game against New Zealand, very vocal, very commanding, strong, physical, was a threat in opposition box as well.

Promising for CB that young

So we expect to see

Yahaya
Edwards
Carter Vickers
Kyle Walker 2
and that young Belgium chap Azzaoui is it?

In the first team within 5 years?

Is there anyone else looking good or has a "big rep"

We shouldn't expect anything as we know it can all change quickly but we do have high hopes for many of them. From your list I have very high hopes for Edwards, Walker-Peters and Carter-Vickers. If it was down to me then I would loan CCV out next season, he is only 17 still but unlike the rest of our promising youngsters he is physically ready for men's football, he is built like a rock and we have little need for him to play another full season of u21s where he's already proven to be a consistent star performer. KWP has the same talent level but as it stands he would struggle physically against senior players, in terms of in-game intelligence and ability on the ball he is several levels above Kyle Walker 1 imo, he's just as rapid but he manipulates the ball far better and more importantly he knows what to do with it, he's still green defensively but he's learning. If everything goes to plan then Edwards has superstar potential, players like him don't come along very often, at 16 though we have to be patient, physically he's never going to be massive, he may top out at about 5'7", we just need to work on building his upper-body and leg strength.

Yahaya we should put to the back of our minds for now, it's still not known for certain whether he will actually become a Spurs player. Azzaoui has talent but currently he's a very immature player who needs to learn how to fit within the team's structure, he has only been here a year though so will still be adapting, he's one I'd say just wait and see on rather than expect anything.

Some players not on your list are Josh Onomah, Harry Winks and Milos Veljkovic. All three are ahead of any of those mentioned above in terms of how close they are to the first team. Onomah is the star of the youth team, he was competing in the u19 next gen tournament at the age of 15 and was part of the side which dismantled Barcelona 4-1 at the Camp Nou along with the likes of Bentaleb and Pritchard. He has been training and travelling with the 1st team on a regular basis since he was 16, he recently turned 18 and it's getting to the point where we have to seriously start looking at integrating him into the 1st team squad. He has the rare combination of size, athleticism and scary ability on the ball, he's often likened to Juventus' Paul Pogba and it's true, his playing style is very similar. Harry Winks is a very capable central midfield player and is always one of the best players on the pitch in any game he takes part in, what he needs to do now though is go and play some 1st team football and really identify what kind of player he is and how to make himself stand out as he's one of these players where it's not instantly obvious like it is with others. Veljkovic had a year to forget on loan last season though that wasn't down to him, he went to Boro when they were near the top of the table with a team performing well and he couldn't force his way in, there was no need for Boro to change things so he was just left sat watching for a few months, then he went to Charlton, started well and on his 3rd start ... dislocated his shoulder, which put him out for the rest of the season so he only managed about 5 games in total which was incredibly frustrating for him. The problem with Veljkovic right now isn't a lack of ability, it's a lack of direction, no one can seem to decide whether he should be a CB or a holding midfielder. For a 19 year old he is very composed, nothing flusters him, he positions himself well, he's a very intelligent player who we need to persevere with.

Others not mentioned that I like. Luke Amos, 18 year old defensive midfielder. Started out as a #10, moved back to CM, has since moved further back to DM and has even played a couple of games at CB. He fits well as a DM, we recently played Chelsea's U21s with a midfield three of Amos, Winks and Miller(will get on to him in a minute) and for long stretches of that game those three were walking rings around Chelsea's players(who absolutely towered over ours by the way). Amos is a very combative player with a fiery nature, something that is pretty common amongst our youngsters so it must be something we drill into them. Will Miller is one under the radar a bit, he's a little #10 with lots of technical ability, still only 18(19 soon) but we're not sure if he has that next level to his game, he could be a late developer that we see quite often.

There are other players like Dominic Ball, Connor Ogilvie and Nathan Oduwa who may not end up making the cut but should at least make it to a decent level elsewhere, we can't have an entire academy of stars but we certainly could potentially have quite a few more to add to Rose, Bentaleb, Mason, Townsend, Pritchard and Kane in the next few years.

I absolutely love posts like this....thanks very much

Sorry if I am totally missing something here... but is this U21 tournament on at the moment

http://www.toulontournament.com/schedule-of-the-toulon-tournament/

England v China tonight, U21s... or is it for ladies or something... or did we send players that aren't playing in the Euros or...?

It's u20s. There aren't any Spurs players there but the u20s group is mainly for players who are less known or haven't quite made the step up yet, the best players in that age group get moved straight up to the u21s or in some cases to the senior side(Luke Shaw, Raheem Sterling etc). If you look at England's squad then there probably aren't too many players there you've heard of - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_national_under-20_football_team

We have three players at the u20 World Cup - Musa Yahaya(17), Cameron Carter-Vickers(17) and Milos Veljkovic(19), it's good experience for them to be playing against older(for the most part) players.

Serbia qualified (top of the group) from the Group Stage of the U20 World Cup. Milos Veljkovic has played all 90 minutes of the three matches so far. They face Hungary in the round of 16.

Nigeria have also qualified (2nd in the group behind Brazil). Musa Yahaya actually scored for Nigeria against Brazil, but they lost the game 4-2. He's featured in every match (once off the bench). Nigeria face tournament favourites Germany in the next round though. The Germans had a ridiculously easy group, but you can only beat what's put in front of you and they demolished the opposition in every game so far.

Finally, also through to the knockout stages is the USA and Cameron Carter-Vickers. By all accounts he has been in amazing form and has been one of the stand-out players of the tournament,. They finished second in the group (behind Ukraine), leaving them a tough tie against Colombia. The bookies have it down as a Colombia win, but it could be a tight match.
