The race for 86 points

I had the worst nightmare last night. For some reason I was asleep for a couple of months (it is a dream, after all) having missed all remaining 8 games of the season. I woke up just after the last game to find out we had lost the last game of the season 1-0 to Southampton (I know, we play Hull in the last game, but hey it's a dream). The nightmare part: we ended up tied with Chelski on 86 points and lost the title, not on GD, but on goals scored. To say I was bawling would be an understatement. And not so much because we missed out on the title, but because I felt that after coming so close, the team would feel that "if we couldn't do it this season either, we'll never do it," and that would be the beginning of the break-up of this team with Poch also heading off to another club.

OK, so this was a dream. But what do people think would happen if this actually happened in real life this season? Would it have a negative impact, or would it still be considered something to build on?
Technically a nightmare, I would say.

14pts clear of 5th place (net 8 with games in hand) with 7 games left.

I am sorry but if we blew a Top 4 spot from here,it would be the ultimate fail.

As said before, the key here is home form. Win the last 3 home matches and that alone would give us a Top 4 finish

Those who cannot overtake us - as at 8th April (alphabetically) :-

Bournemouth
Burnley
Crystal Palace
Hull
Leicester
Middlesbrough
Southampton
Stoke
Sunderland
Swansea
Watford
West Brom
West Ham

Loving that gap to Liverpool too. Come on Stoke, get something today please.

The loss of Mane is vital to them. They still have an easier run-in than ours with no Top 7 teams left to play, but back-to-back away days at Stoke and WBA is a decent test for them

8 points isn't a lot. If the games in hand are won and Arsenal win an early game at some point in the next few weeks (if they play ahead of us, I mean), then the gap would be down to five before we kick off on that particular weekend.

Triumphalism isn't in order yet. We've been in similar positions before, although this side is...very different to any other Tottenham Hotspur side I've ever watched over the past two-odd decades.

Oh definitely not over, years of being a Spurs fan has taught me that. We have been in good positions before, but right now this is one of the best positions I have seen us in, bearing in mind there is only 7 games left, but like you say, this is a different Tottenham team,

We certainly looked to have learned lessons from last season. We have won early ko games we would have lost in the past, we are digging out away wins and we are scoring goals for fun at home like I havent seen for a long time

Exactly......so don't worry.

Who spotted the table on BT that showed this season and last season combined?.

Wow

We're top 11pts clear...couldn't believe it.

Yep. Exactly what I thought. Amazing. I know for some it won't matter unless we win something to prove our worth ( and I would LOVE that to happen, of course). But this is just another demonstration of not only how we are massively punching above our weight, but also of how we are worthy title contenders, not just flukes. Of course you can make an arbitrary cut-off at any time any time and if the starting point of this comparison had been 2 or 3 seasons ago it would look very different. But the very fact that tables are being made about us (in a positive way) is very telling.

If you watched the same bit on BTSport you would also have heard Hoddle being quite critical of Eriksen, saying he doesn't produce against the big teams. It saddened me to hear Hoddle play down Eriksen in that way. Maybe it's because he has such high standards - and with good reason. But he wasn't as appreciative as I would have expected. Maybe I misinterpreted what he said.

EDIT I tried to insert a screenshot of the table Ricky referred to but I don't think it has worked.

as mentioned in another thread. We've been a touch unlucky in that period. Last year we had leicester from nowhere, and this season Chelsea building up a near-record points haul.
In another world we could have been on the cusp of back-to-back titles

Even if we do win all our remaining PL games, which is highly unlikely despite our great form IMO, Chelski still need to drop 7 points in 7 games:

Manure (A)
Southampton (H)
Everton (A)
Boro (H)
WBA (A)
Sunderland (H)
Watford (H)

Manure and Everton really are the only tricky fixtures there, but I see Chelski as favourites in both games. At best, that'll be two draws and the gap reduced to 3 points (if we defy gravity and win the last seven games).

Watford are tinkle poor, Boro and Sunderland agree likely to be relegated when they play Chelski, which leaves Southampton and WBA. Who have nothing to play for.

Really, if we somehow win this, that'll be the first time someone came second in a one horse race. It will have to be an epic collapse from Chelski, basically.

I think it's dead now and we're playing for 2nd

but, they play Zlatan next week, he can beat anyone, then they have to play us

if we get it to one point it's solely a matter of who cracks first

they finish at relegated sunderland, who have a better record than most against them in recent years and how many times have we seen a dogbrick team falling out of the league pull out a win against a top side, a 5-1 comes to mind

If they match our result next week it's over. Seven points in six games won't happen.

I'm with you on that. I still feel we have a small chance however we need the gap to be cut to 4 or 5 after next week. That said, if we finish top 3 it will still have been an excellent season
