Team GB can't do it all on thier own, which is what the other teams have left them to do. Germany have a great sprinter in Greipel, they really don't seem to have done him any favours

Most of them have teammates in the breakaway. Its not in their interest to bring them back.

They don't have radio links to the team cars and all the information and instruction they get in the main tours. That leaves it to the riders to decide on the road with less information. They might not have been too clear on the size of the breakaway and the time gaps.

Its seems the German plan was to rely on the British team to keep the peloton in contention and keep their strength to lead out their sprinter. It was probably their best strategy.

Basically the organisers fudged them over. Everyone was guessing at timechecks. You can't control a race without knowing how far in front the break is and when to take them back.
