I'm trying to say that I don't see how it makes a blind bit of difference where someone was born to how professional they are. Nationality is irrelevant in club football.

There was certainly a culture of unprofessionalism at some clubs in the past, to continue using Arsenal as example, the best thing that ever happened to them was the influx of new attitudes towards coaching and preparation from Wenger. When exposed to this it benefitted the domestic players who were no longer trapped in the old ways.

It's not the nationality thats important, it's the ideas that people have been exposed to.
 
As I've said before there are far too many average foreign players in british football, as for its not nationality but coaching that makes the player that could be true if clubs signed young players and tried to develop them but the league is awash with "Redknapp type" signings, players who may keep the manager on the gravy train but have little chance of moving the club forward, they are seen as instant solutions and safer than investing or giving youth a chance. I don't consider N'jie, GKN or Llorente as players who have offered us more than some youngsters we have had.

Germany seems the way forward for youth at the moment, the players are good in England now and the Germans know they can get a decent player for a few years and then sell back to the UK at a huge fee. The Youth know they will be played and when they are bought for the huge fee they will be more likely to be picked. They also know that if they turn out to be good the German club will sell them on for a semi-reasonable fee. So for a Zaha level player it would mean they get a move for 50M rather than 90M by joining a lower Prem team.

Have to say it’s a win for the players and for the clubs recruiting them

Clubs over here are petrified of taking chances on players and it’s the fans that expect the best that have to change to let clubs gamble every now and then

We do it more than most and our fans have brought into it

When I look at a club like united for example they have lingaard who is average and has taken about 6 years to get established and Rashford who they kinda lucked out on as he was not held in any regard. They had to okay him for one game due to injuries and he played well enough for people to pay attention.
 
Problem is most managers know they are only a bad ten game run from the sack. Fergie knew the value of academy kids and had the nack of integrating them even if they weren’t quite at the level of the top players he knew they would give the proverbial 110% and follow his instructions to the letter. Van Gaal to his credit did try but for all the talk about the United way it was really the Fergie way. I remember reading him mentioning the United wage structure actually being an issue in a letter to Cantona recently, he really couldn’t have timed his retirement any better!

I think Poch has a similar plan and is probably one of the few who could survive a ten game wobble based on the credit he has in the bank. Probably Howe too, who also seems a coach who can improve players.

Historically it seemed like only seemed like Southampton and Everton have produced young players regularly, perhaps indicative of the regular club’s mid table standings where managers could take a few risks.

Ultimately there’s no substitute for time on the pitch and senior squads are so much bigger now a kid really has to be something else to take a 100k a week’s player on the bench, let alone start five games in his preferred position in a row.

"We had some things we had to do with the stadium: seats, lighting and more. But the main thing for me was to get this building [the players' pavilion at the training centre] constructed. It meant the players came back after the summer with a different mindset. They needed to feel a difference, to walk in and realise that Bournemouth meant business.

"I wanted a centre to help the players recover better after training. I wanted a cryotherapy chamber. I wanted to improve the gym. We spent a lot of money on the training pitches. It meant that there were no excuses not to perform at the top level. This was never a one-season thing, but a permanent fixture."

Shades of Guardiola - 'I'm obsessed with the details

With sporting stories such as these, it is tempting to talk of magic and miracles. The reality, as Howe is keen to stress, is far less mysterious. Even the greatest tales rely upon masses of hard work and determination.

"I have a burning desire to achieve and that leads to a high amount of work," he says when I ask if he is a workaholic.

"I am committed to the job and I will try and do anything I can to affect results, however much work that takes. I think I am addicted to the game. I think you have to be, with the volume of games you are watching and the amount of interest you have to have. You have to love the game."

Having spoken to multiple Bournemouth players, the one name that keeps cropping up is Pep Guardiola. Key members of Howe's squad believe their manager shares principles and an ethos with one of the greats of modern management. What does he think of the comparison?

"I would like to think it's about commitment and being obsessed with details, being obsessed about the small things that make the big things happen.

"I am passionate on the training ground about things being perfect. It's about taking a performance, breaking down every single aspect of it and then working on making each aspect a little better.

"Every moment, every game, every season. I don't know how Pep Guardiola works, but that's certainly how I am."

Howe's commitment to improvement through detail is astonishing. In the players' lounge at the training ground, a team of six video analysts have been asked to study a montage of recent missed chances in order to replicate the scenarios in specifically-designed training drills. On the walls around the room are wipe-clean boards with data from the season so far.

At a glance, you can learn in which match Bournemouth recorded the highest number of regains in the attacking half and which player is responsible for the most entries into the final third.

"I think the most important thing is the mentality to improve," Howe says. "We find the players with the right mental characteristics that fit the club.

"I know that we demand a lot from our players. So if a player doesn't have a desire to improve or a thirst for knowledge and doesn't want to grow, it will be difficult for him here.

"But with an open mind, working with them, it's incredibly exciting to see what you can achieve."


 
Taking new players out to dinner - 'They have to know I care about them'

The squad feels they are appreciated, respected and trusted by their manager - which is exactly the atmosphere Howe wants to create. They know setbacks and mistakes are not only inevitable, but necessary on the path to sustainable improvement.

"I think this has always been a family club," Howe says. "When I was here as a player everyone knew everyone's personal lives and truly felt an attachment to each other. I don't think that has changed even although the club has got bigger. That is so important to me, the feeling at the training ground and club."

Howe underplays his own role, because there are few Premier League managers who are so hands-on. When Ryan Fraser joined the club from Aberdeen, Howe took him out to dinner to get to know him and help him settle a long way from home.

"I just wanted to make him feel comfortable where he is living and help him to make friends in the area that would be positive for him.

"You have to spend time with your players because that shows them that you care about them as individuals as well as footballers."

This season, Howe has used five different players (captain Simon Francis, Steve Cook, Ryan Fraser, Charlie Daniels and Marc Pugh) who appeared regularly for the club during their League One promotion campaign in 2012-13.

If the club's rise is highly unusual, a cluster of players keeping pace with each promotion is almost unprecedented. How has Howe improved third-tier regulars to the level of top-half Premier League performers?

"Those players have been absolutely incredible in representing this club, their families and themselves," he says, typically deflecting the praise.

"Every challenge they have faced, they have usually overcome. The improvement in those players is truly incredible, and I've been delighted to have been a part of that journey with them.

"The path for learning is there at Bournemouth if the player wants it. Not everyone chooses that path. But every one of those players you mention has had setbacks along the way.

"They have fought, they have gone again and they have challenged themselves. And that's why they more than anyone are a shining example of what you can achieve with hard work and discipline."

'My personal ambitions are matched by Bournemouth's ambitions'


Bournemouth are 12 points above the bottom three, but Howe is determined not to let complacency creep in.

Howe's mantra is that rather than being better than Manchester United, Saudi Sportswashing Machine or Cardiff, just make sure Bournemouth are the best that they can be. That removes the glass ceiling. Your only limitations are the ones you place upon yourself.

But level-headed does not mean he lacks ambition. He has been described as England's "special one" by Gary Lineker and mentioned in passing for the top job at Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and England.

Jurgen Klopp was approached by Dortmund and Maurizio Sarri by Napoli after overachieving at provincial clubs and Jamie Carragher believes if Howe was managing in Germany or Spain he would have been approached by a Champions League club by now. But that can - and must - all wait.

"I am massively driven, and hugely ambitious," Howe says firmly. "I have never hidden that, and never wanted to. But in this job, and I'm not just saying it, I'm hugely ambitious for Bournemouth. My personal ambitions are matched by Bournemouth's ambitions."

So can a club from a provincial seaside town, one that came so close to tumbling out of the Football League a decade ago, really look higher still?

"Only the sky is the limit," Howe says. "The one thing this journey has taught me is that you should never put limitations on what you can achieve.

I wouldnt know the specifics to be honest. Did they suffer badly for injury? Did they not have the right players for the job? Was he making the best of a bad situation?

I generally follow them in broad strokes, so honestly dont have the answers.

The article would suggest, even if their faults were squarely on him - he has seen it and rectified it though, which can only be a credit to him (how many managers continue to persevere with tactics that dont work!?)

It is absolutely a credit to him that he's sorted it out. I think the disparity is between how you and I are able to enjoy them as neutrals who want to see a good game vs looking at them as someone who needs them to win more than they lose. They've been great fun for neutrals for a while, but that doesn't always means they're being managed well. The changes he's made seem to be making all the difference.

They've gone on good runs in the past, but there's always been equally poor runs as well. We'll see at the end of the season.
