Winning the Peace Cup and those Makita tournaments are some of my happiest moments as a supporter.

Not really, but the League Cup win in 2008 comes a clear #2 in my lifetime, after 1991

Btw the Johnson's Paint Trophy actually became a massive cult thing for Leeds fans. They were desperate to win it the couple of years they qualified for it, and were genuinely gutted they never managed to

Have to agree with this I hate what football has become , the money, greedy players, dodgy agents, Sky always trying to tell us we have the best Lge in the world, selling the myth that the CL is the only thing that matters, and fans who think winning things is not as important as it once once was.

Quick question how many of those who voted for the CL actually travel the country and abroad on a regular basis, or watch the game from the armchair?
 
Since we last won the FA Cup, more than two thirds of all the domestic cup honours have been won by the Sky 4. If you narrow the window to the period of ENIC's ownership of Spurs and include Emirates Marketing Project, the figure is 75%. In all that time, the rate at which cup winners have come from outside that season's top 4 has still only been between 20 and 30% for the FA Cup and 50% for the League Cup. That makes this is a rather pointless and abstract discussion, in my view, as if it is an either-or. It isn't an either-or. If we aren't good enough to challenge for the CL places, we are very, very seldom going to be able to console ourselves with a cup win anyway. The "Champions'" League puts me off to sleep even faster than a chat about the club's finances over a mug of Horlicks, but that's a separate issue (I'd still vote trophies, anyway).

They go hand in hand.
If you are regularly in the ECL, you are also likely to win trophies.
If you are regularly winning trophies, you are also likely to be in the ECL.

id say people that go regularly would be more inclined to want to see the club win trophies on a regular basis whereas those who pick and choose when they go or only watch on tv/internet are more likely to want to see us making up the numbers in the CL. it's why the club could sell out CL midweek ties 10 times over but barely scrape 30k in the EL - everyman and his dog wants to go Rel Madrid away but only a couple of hundred go to support the team in Eastern Europe etc

it's not really relevant but id be surprised if there wasn't a trend

Simple really, I have a h/a ST and part of the fun of going to the away games is to have the crack with those who travel. One of the cracks is wanting our team to win as many games as possible and to see us win trophys. If I was the type to sit at home and watch from my armchair I MAY think different ( I doubt it though). How do you know its a mix of both or are you the spokesman?

tickle my balls with a feather, I travel with the same group of lads and not ONE of them would give up the chance of a trophy regardless of what trophy it is.
 
i think the question of 'What would be better for the clubs development - winning a trophy (outside of of CL/league title) or qualifying for the CL? would see a different response - establishing ourselves as a CL club is what will help us become a bigger club and challenge for, and eventually win, more trophies, but the question this thread is asking basically boils down to 'would you prefer to make up the numbers in the CL or consistently win trophies' of which there can surely only be one answer...

speaking solely for me, I want us to win the European Cup, and I think everything we do should be focused 100% on that

WTF is wrong with some of you!?! CL over trophies, I really can understand the lure but choosing it over winning the FA Cup...Jesus tap dancing Christ. I'd take 2 FA Cups in 5 years with no CL over CL for 10 consecutive seasons and no trophies anyday of the week.

Bloody embarressing, no wonder nuetrals laugh at us.
 
Trophies. Obviously.

But.. most of the fans who want us to qualify for the CL want us to do so precisely because it would give us the financial clout and worldwide reputation that would bring trophies.

If the question referred strictly to next season, sure, CL qualification would bring less immediate glory, but it would likely make us bigger contenders for trophies in the following seasons.

It just isn't true that those of us (including myself) who bang on about CL qualification see that as an end. It is a means to get more trophies, maybe even a league title one day. We all want glory for this wonderful club.

I dunno... I quite like the look of the Premier League trophy with that lovely gold crown on top... and the FA Cup has a nice shiny silver lid... although I'd settle for any of them tbh... beggars can't be choosers...

Without CL, there's no chance we'll be winning more than one or two domestic cups in a decade. The poll options here aren't really nuanced or realistic enough, it's not like one precludes the other. Chances are though that the added income will allow us to win a trophy or two anyway.

If the question was "guaranteed CL every other year or two league/FA cups in the next ten years", I'd take CL without hesitation.

I would take one EL win over a hat trick of FA cups, even without the CL spot.
 
One damning statistic is that should we not win a trophy in the next 2 years (i.e. by 2018) we will have gone the longest period in our history post war without winning one. Additionally we currently hold the record, along with Man U, of being the only team to have won a trophy in every decade since and including the 1950s.

I find it nauseating to think that since we last won the FA Cup in 1991 Woolwich have won it 7 times and Chelsea 6. It was our fudgein cup!!

We will only make the top 4 if one of the established top 4 implode; Chelsea and CIty will never implode ever again because of their money; United will be ok now that Van Gaal has settled in and woolwich have the financial clout to buy another £40m player. Therefore, for me the focus should be on finishing 5th to be on the coat tails of the top 4 should one of them fudge up, but all our eggs should be in the cup baskets above league. We really ought to have gone for it in the FA Cup this year - beaten Burnley away (thus avoiding the replay and extra game) and Leicester at home (which we would have with a full strength XI).

If we have to prioritise next season I hope that we sack off the league game rather than a cup match.

And both have enjoyed a sustained period of CL qualification playing some of the best teams in Europe - sorry to all the romantics dreaming of FA cup glory ala 1981 etc. but football has changed (not necessarily for the better imo) and so must we! Surely the past 20 years has shown you all what I mean by this! We stood still under a very stubborn Alan Sugar at a time when we needed to take a risk ("to do is to dare!!"remember) and we've been playing catch up ever since (badly too btw!).
