The new, new manager thread - Pt 3

My concern isn't that he isn't a top 4 manager - I've long said that our 'hire 'em, fire 'em' approach to managerial recruitment over the past decade means we'll struggle to attract a manager who might be perceived as 'top notch'.
My concern with Pochettino is that he's being recruited in large part because his teams play a certain way. Entertaining football they say. I have followed Spurs through thick and thin since the 70s and I'd like to see us start winning consistently, even if it means winning ugly. We haven't played 'the Tottenham way' save for the odd season here or there for decades.
I fear Pochettino has come into Southampton following an apparently average spell at Espanyol and successfully turned them into the best of the third tier teams (the top tier being the top 4 and the second tier being the perennial Europa League place teams). But managing our present squad of more experienced players to the satisfaction of one of the most impatient Chairmen and some of the most fickle fans in the Prem is, I'd suggest, a very different game. It might be he can do it. Hope so.
Afterall, I was pro AVB because I liked his 'vision'. Shows what I know.
Come on Poch, prove me wrong.
COYS.

I'd say that's pretty much the norm these days. Managers will go where they see money and potential, regardless of what's happened in the past. You have to avoid the usual cycle of a major rebuild every 3 or 4 years when you hit a slump to stay in a job. Most managers are to focused on achieving right now, with no thought for the long term. Only the rare exceptions manage to keep a squad fresh and motivated for several years.

You could possibly add Vertonghen to that tooo

I'm still not sold on the whole Vertonghen not being a team player thing.

I think his mannerisms and expressions make him look like he doesn't give a **** - much like Berbatov. I'd say I'm fairly similar in personality to him - most people who don't know me would probably think I don't give a **** about anything either. That's not true though, I just don't really react much and I don't get angry/flustered.

I'd rather that in a player (assuming they do actually care) as it leads to calmness under pressure and an ability to get out of a hole when needed. It also makes him incredibly unlikely to ruffle any feathers internally.

Am fine with Poch. Cant say that he was top of my list, probably number 4 behind FSW, FDB and Allegri, however a sensible enough choice that hopefully all our fans will get behind the man. My preference was just to get someone expericned in (hence FSW and Allegri) and, if not, I had FDB ahead of it due to more trophies on his mantlepiece

At least with Poch we should be able to look forward to a better quality of football next year

That's exactly how and who we should be comparing him with.

Bang. On.

I keep hearing pundits/experts (I'm looking at you here as well Kevin Bitter...I mean Bond) asking why we would go for someone so inexperienced and its just another Spurs mistake blah blah and not one person has mentioned those two in comparison and at the time of their appointments the exact same thing could have been said.

Those that say Pochettino has never managed prima donnas he had Osvaldo at expanyol who he turned into a beast unfortunately a beast that got out of his cage at Southampton just one time but he certainly has experience of managing tough characters

I hate to put a damper on things, but I simply don't see how appointing a manager with a 1.39 Points per Game Premier League record is a vast improvement on the bloke we just fired, who had a 1.95 Points per Game Premier League record.

Or am I missing something?

Different players.

At Spurs he will be playing with a group of players that averaged 1.95 points per league game, at Southampton his players only averaged 1.39 pts/g.

P.S. Does anyone have the link for the interview with ... I think it was Shneiderlin, describing Poch's system. I think it is earlier in this thread.

I was about to post 'Cheeky bid?', and then I read this:

On 25 November, Osvaldo was apparently angry with teammate Erik Lamela after not receiving a pass during the 0–2 defeat at Udinese and was fined and suspended by his club for "punching Lamela in the face."

edit: okay, it appears they made up

‘I can be really annoying when it comes to this, as I always want the ball and admit I am as egotistical as most strikers. This incident, though, really was nothing. If I had Lamela’s left foot then I wouldn’t have passed the ball either.’

Not sure we'll sign Osvaldo, I think we certainly looked at him last summer, I presume under Baldini's recommendation (he signed him for Roma), but we decided to pass for whatever reason and went for Soldado instead. Wrong decision, playing style and ability wise, IMO, BUT, I cant remember the reason why he left Southampton, but I'm pretty sure it was for something fairly serious/violent.

I just see this appointment as a mistake for a couple of reasons:

- The stars aligned at Southampton for Poch, right man right place right time. Its no secret that the Southampton side is going to break up in the summer and Poch does not want the challenge ahead. Now I would have seen next season at Southampton as the real acid test if he is worth his salt.

- We have a history of these "over the fence appointments" or transfer purchases and they rarely pay off. Ramos, Hoddle, Bent, Bentley etc etc

I really do think that after years of mistakes we should be dangling this job for the cream of management to apply and appoint the best man from a pool of 10/20.

Why would they come to us? Well run club, good financial footing (the finance part is always a draw for top managers), now stadium opening up numerous commercial avenues, best training ground in Europe (or there about), very good squad at the right age range.

Simone....
