The Limp Struggle to Sneak into the top 4 2021/22

Just worked out the last game I actually saw us win was Morecambe on 9th January (and they needed the Calvary bringing on to beat them)
Chelsea (h) - 0-1
Leicester (a) - 3-2 (couldn't get a ticket)
Chelsea (a) - 0-2 (couldn't get a ticket)
Brighton (h) - 3-1 (family commitments)
So'ton (h) - 2-3
Wolves (h) - 0-2
Emirates Marketing Project (a) - 3-2 (couldn't get a ticket)
Burnley (a) - 0-1
Leeds (a) - 4-0 (couldn't get a ticket)
Boro' (a) - 0-1

Last 10 Games - 4 wins/6 Losses - Attended 5 all losses

I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't be attending Monday night :(
Ha, you made me think and my last win was Norwich on 5 Dec!!! I’m going on Monday too!

Still think top four is possible. If Arsenal win their game in hand that's 6 points. Currently 5 points up to United and 3 to West Ham.

So at most a 6 point gap with 13 games left for us. That's definitely doable.

But we need to put a good run together and probably pick up points both against Arsenal and United as we'll drop points elsewhere.

Won't have as many midweek games going forward, I think that could really help us.

Really need a win against Everton. Get more points on the board, keep the gap from increasing at the very least. I'm cautious with the "must win" label, but it's getting closer.

Arsenals games in hand are against us and Chelsea
Not fixtures they would normally do well in

Of course it’s still possible but we’d need to go on a hell of a run. I just don’t see it. Momentum and consistency is the one thing we don’t have.

We’d also need to get our injured players back asap and be very lucky with injuries for the rest of the season

Not that long ago we had momentum and decent consistency at the very least. I think it's possible to get that back.

6 days from the Boro game to the Everton game. Another 6 to the United game. Our results with less time between games have been significantly worse than those with a week or closer to a week between games. (Saw some stats on this a little while ago, but don't have them now).

Will be difficult to build momentum starting at the United game if we have another disappointment against Everton. Particularly as that may then be a game we must win. If we go into the United game with a boost from the Everton game anything can happen I think.

Im not even considering top 4. We’re not good enough nor consistent enough. Plus Arsenal still seem to be getting all of the luck as usual.I think we will end up finishing 7th.

Outside of the top 2-3 momentum and consistency has been…inconsistent. At differing times you have had people predicting Man U, Spurs and Arsenal all getting 4th at the time said club has had the momentum. But none of the cluster of clubs chasing fourth has had the consistency, hence why despite our poor run we are still in the race. The key is to be the ones having the momentum in the final few games….

Bingo, apart from the top three the rest are really much of a muchness and any team could grab that 4th place, it all depends which one will put a run together and we are still in with a shout. Not saying we will but you could say the same for the others.

We do have consistency of a sorts if you look at our form since jan.

We are consistently inconsistent.

I disagree, you only have to look at the recent form guide, we have lost 4 of our last 6 in the league, United are actually unbeaten in the last 6.

They may not have been playing well but they are missing bags of chances and grinding out results. They have match winners on the bench who can come on and make a difference.

It pains me to say it but Arsenal have only lost 1 of the last 6 and look better placed than us to go on a run.

United are 5 points ahead of us already, if we are to have any chance we need to win at Old Trafford.

Love all the optimism but my head tells me 4th is not for us this year.

We win the next 2 i'll have a glimmer of hope. But i can't see us getting 4th.

Maybe conte having whole weeks to prepare for games we might improve. But a big ask.

I think 68pts will get 4th this year.

So 13 games...2pts a game is what we need. Looks a tough ask, but the head to head games are going to be the critical ones...no lose minimum.

Just need to ensure we beat both Goons and United
But we won't

Apart from the 2 loses in a row, since jan that has been our form. Could you imagine getting top 4 with that form? Think we'd all be batbrick crazy by the end of the season.

Edit - just realised thats 1.5 points a game. We'd need WDWDWDWD to average 2 points.

Last six is often used to describe current form, it's a good enough indication.

Like when we had good form at first with Conte it usually isn't a strong predictor for future form. Particularly when teams are inconsistent.

And it also doesn’t actually take into account performance, just results and no factor for timing of games.
Said it earlier this week, arsenal have played 8 games this calendar year compared to our 14 now… they have scored 6 goals. That’s a hell of a low goal return and one that may continue, may improve or may get worse. Who knows.
United couldn’t score vs Watford despite battering them and limped to a draw vs Burnley. But arguably they have got better under Ralf as his influence has grown, but we do know their actually quite fragile this season
If we could predict football bookies would be bankrupt
