The Lane, The Finale

A few thoughts ...

Sol Campbell. I'm indifferent now. In some ways it would a nice gesture to bury the hatchet (not literally), but his attendance would be bound to get a bad reaction from some fans. No need to sour the moment.

Sugar. Mixed feelings. He certainly wasn't ambitious for the club if it meant spending money. His vision was more a Amstrad Hotspur. However, he wasn't responsible for the financial mess and did stabilize our position, even if it was mid-table mediocrity. He could have done more, but we'll never know if another owner would have done better or worse. He does seem to be a fan, though, so I think an invite is fine.

Scholar. He is responsible for the financial mess the club got into. He is also the chairman who drove out Burkinshaw and came up with the ruse for football clubs to get around Rule 34. He not only ended our golden era, but he set the stage for the commercial era and left us in a terrible position to enter it. It has taken a quarter century to recover. No thanks.

Other players who left acrimoniously. Generally indifferent. It is in the past and if they made significant achievements for the club then they should be welcome. Berbatov was the biggest disappointment, but it was Fergie's antics at the airport that were most annoying. I hope he (Fergie) isn't there.

Oh man, what a memory. I was there. I grew up near Coventry so quite a lot of people supported Coventry... I was proud to go against that and support Spurs. In 1987 I was 13 and we had a great team. We faced Coventry in the FA Cup Final and I was sure we would win, so excited, couldn't wait... told everyone we would win, there was no way this fantastic Spurs team would let me down. Watched all the build up for hours in my front room... then Spurs let me down.

Seven years later I was a huge Nirvana fan and I got tickets to see them at Wembley, around May time, couldn't wait, I'd never been to Wembley, so excited... then Curt got ill in Rome... then killed himself on April 5th, the day before my 20th birthday... so gutted.

So I went to the Coventry Spurs game on 9th April 1994 to cheer myself up. I joined a poxy crowd of 14,487 to sit and watch a really dire performance. Again I was sure we could win. The only thing of note was Kevin Scott's bungling efforts to give them a penalty, and Peter Ndlovu scoring it.

I went home so disappointed, disillusioned, tired of Spurs... we ended up 15th that year, 6 points behind Cheatski in 14th, three points away from relegation. Utd won the league with 92 points.

Man we were bad. But soon we would surge up the table and overtake Cheatski, right? Right?

We've all suffered SO much over the years.
That's cheered me up no end.

Did you by any chance go to pick up a little puppy from someone's house only to find it had already been crushed under the wheel of your car?

For what it's worth you sound like an absolute jinx. No more OMT's for you!

Very true. I have never done an OMT and never will, I am the jinxiest jinx evah.

For instance, 7 years ago I bought myself a motorbike for my birthday. On April 5th I rode it home 200 miles. But the heavens opened and rain lashed down for hour after hour. Eventually I fell off and snapped both my legs in half. That night I'm told I suffered through a 12 hour operation to save my legs, then the next day another 18 hours to sort them out and insert metal pins and screw my heel up and over the next few weeks several more operations to sort out various things. Apparently we beat the Goons and Cheatski and Emirates Marketing Project and qualified for the Champions League in our highest ever PL finish. But I was broken into pieces, didn't see a thing, didn't notice a thing. Apart from the guy in the bed next to me who drank 2 litres of Lucozade and then vommed 2 litres of Lucozade all over the ward. Chav prick.

Damn, that sounds bloody awful! Any chance you feel like going motorbiking in heavy rain during the next few weeks? It just might win us the league, you know! ;) I kid, I kid ... :D

Jeeezus, man. That is bloody awful.

Yeah, we're gonna have to seriously fudge up Bullet if we're going to win the league from here. Volunteers please.

Looks like we've finally found a purpose for this set of pricks.

Speaking of memories from The Lane. Where did this guy go?

The dude from Broadchurch mentions him in an interview on the OS.

On the back of the rSol chat....if we could invite 5 anti-heroes back to placed in the stocks and have rotten tomatoes thrown at them who would you choose:

a) to be the 5 in the stocks - 3 must be ex-spurs players
b) to throw the tomatoes

2. The Lane – The Finale
  • DC went through the outline plans for the last match at the Lane against Manchester United on 14 May
  • Pending rights clearances it is hoped that the farewell ceremony will be broadcast live
  • Invites have gone out to former players and dignitaries
  • There will be a 15-20 minute gap to set up staging for the finale after the final whistle, during which time the bars will reopen and various entertainments will be laid on
  • The ceremony itself is anticipated to last 30-35 minutes
"Pending rights clearances..." Presumably from those who will be part of the entertainment e.g. Chas and Dave, - and/or any other performers?
