The Goon Thread

When teams we are supposed to be rivals of spend £5000000+ a week for one new players wages. It is easy to feel like a poor relation with very little chance of competing at the top.
I honestly don't see us getting top four without some positive show of intent in the transfers market and playing Europe league football in this wonderful new stadium will feel like a false economy!

Levy out.
Blimey, I am blown by your rebuttal to @Jurgen the German's valid post. Well done.

They're losing Sanchez but at least they're spending money and trying to improve their team with Aubameyang and Mkhitryan. Which is more than what we're doing.

They're spending money to replace players they are losing - im pretty certain if we were losing our main attacking threat we'd also be replacing them in the same window. Strange critisim/comparison

Ultimately, with both deals happening, they should be left in about the same position.

Most importantly, with the same weaknesses they went into the window with.

Undoubtedly they have two quality players, though they come with the caveats of temperament and lack of playing/form, but they arent any stronger, are they?

In the short term slightly weaker if Giroud goes.....(can we swap him for Llorente? ;) I really rate him:rolleyes:)

they've lost one player and are about to sign a 2nd player

We'll see what they end up with come the end of the window - right now it's Walcott and Sanchez out and only Mhiktiryan in, which is a weakening. They've also sold Coquelin which further weakens their central midfield options.

It looks like Giroud will be going the other way if PEA comes in which is far from a done deal this window - if they pull that one off it's as good a move as they could have hoped for but still leaves them weaker overall imo either way the point remains that they are replacing outgoing players so it's a silly comparison

As you said, we'll see. May not be so "silly" if they upgrade in certain positions. The overall point is they are spending money.

Money they have to spend to account for losses. I think THAT is the point. They arent spending to strengthen, they are spending to maintain what they have.

Its different from spending to improve, isnt it?

No whether they upgrade or not isnt really what makes it a silly comparison the point was that they are replacing outgoing players - something we dont need to be doing this window

Sanchez out for Mhiktiryan and Aubameyang IMO is strengthening. Yes they have lost Walcott but he hasnt played this year.

Mhiktiryan hasnt played much either and doesn't look much use when he has - PEA if he adapts and plays as well as he does in Germany will be a good signing but they already have a striker they signed from a comparable league with a good record failing to adjust - if he matches Sanchez's output then he would have done very well.

Those two in would be as good as they could have hoped for but Sanchez has been one of the best players in the league the past few seasons and has carried them by himself at times - big shoes to fill

Essentially, they could end up with Sanchez and Giroud swapped for Lacazette and PEA. Sanchez and Giroud have been really good for them imo, so I'm not sure if the latter duo makes them a stronger team. Giroud has contributed massively from the bench, Sanchez has been the heartbeat of the team as well as a goal scorer. It's also not really clear how Lacazette and PEA knit together in the same side -- well, not clear to me anyway.

Then, Mikeytarian (can't be bothered with his name) will end up replacing Ozil. That leaves them weaker overall.

Walcott is an irrelevance.

But is Mhiktiryan and Aubameyang in with Sanchez, Walcott, Coquelin, Giroud and Ozil leaving strengthening? That is what they are currently looking at in the next six months?

But for outgoing players, are they filling gaps in the squad where they were weakest?
