The General Transfer Rumours and Speculation Thread

Pochettino also "made a point of" praising Bentaleb later on in the season saying that he was working well in training. Probably after that article was written though.
IIRC, didn't Poch say something like 'he's been working hard in training, and if he carries on like that he'll be part of the team'? I took that as a backhanded threat to toe the line.

He has been an accident waiting to happen when he's played this season, unlike every other player in the squad who has been steady and reliable.

If the rumours are half true then half a season watching his team mates be successful as a team will give him the opportunity to work hard and show he is ready if called upon. But clearly Dier, Dembele, Carroll, Mason and Winks have all put themselves in better positions for selection.
That's not to say he is a bad egg, in Pochs mind he may just be good egg no.6 at present. But if he has got his head down and kept working whilst not playing then he will prove he has the attitude Poch wants, ie you've never "made it", because there is always more to strive for as a team.

He may, of course, just have been a one season wonder

5 appearances - 1 bad game against United, and 4 solid enough

Pretty harsh to write off someone's career because of 1 particularly bad/memorable pass.

Except there's been several of those passes in most games he's played. He has been anything but solid.

Bayern Munich have completed the signings of Benfica’s midfielder Renato Sanches and Borussia Dortmund’s defender Mats Hummels.

The 18-year-old Portuguese international will cost Bayern €35m while the fee for the Germany defender is undisclosed. Both players have signed five-year deals.

Ok the window is almost upon us; if you had your way, who would you bring in to the club in the summer?

I'll go first:

- a CF (perhaps Sebastain Haller from Utrecht)
- a tricky/pacy MF to help unlock stubborn defences and commit defences to give away fouls and thrust us forward (not sure who; does Teilemans count in this description?)
- and older head in CM who is nearer the end of his career who can fill in on the more defensive side of things; Lassana Diarra would be good imo if he isn't too expensive wage-wise
- a CB who is beast in the air (and pacy enough on the floor) to play away vs WBA and vs Chelski (not sure if CCV can fit this mould)

From watching the under 21s this season CCV is anything but a beast in the air. Our under 21s are even worse at defending set pieces than our first team.

My summer signings would be:
1. Haller (CF)
2. Wanyama (DM)
3. Boufal (AM)

I think they would cost about 40 to 45 million in total and all would be well within our capability to snap up. I think we would then have a reasonably complete squad to have a pop at doing the double.

What do you lot think of the Lallana rumours?
Good player who is comfortable in a Pochettino system. I can't see Liverpool selling him at all however, let alone to a perceived rival (I say perceived as Liverpool have finished above us about as many times as Everton have in recent years).

What's the skinny on Haller? Who's he like, what's his strengths, etc?

22 goals in 33 games this season at Utrecht (11 in 17 last season). From the obligatory youtube video he seems to be an "off the shoulder" striker but fairly quick and instinctive. Utrecht entrust him with penalty taking so they must be happy about his confidence and nerves.

Another young striker playing in the Eredivisie is Vincent Janssen at AZ Alkmaar, plays very similar to Kane in that he's happy to go out wide to collect balls down the channel as well as playing off the shoulder.

It's funny. People want to move on Bentaleb and Mason, yet propose such poor alternatives like those. It's like they are nostalgic for the Blondell and Saib days!

That's just you putting an exaggerated spin on things.... I would imagine those that suggest Diarra would be doing so for a few reasons....
1. Added experience (we are a young team that may have lacked a bit of experience and leadership in recent weeks when throwing away leads that would've kept us in the title race/guaranteed 2nd place.
2. A player who is adept at playing in the 'Dier' role (we currently have nobody other than Dier who is a natural player in this position.
3. Bringing in a player who already has experience in playing both PL and CL football.
4. Bringing in a player on a free transfer and thus not using valuable transfer funds to add cover to a first team position.

Whether or not you or I agree with trying to bring in Diarra surely you can see the logic in why some people might suggest him as an option?

Teilemans is a different case. He is a player who is rated as having the potential to be one of the best in Europe. Of course he hasn't fulfilled that potential yet, but I would imagine those wanting to sign him would be doing so in the hope that we were unearthing another Modric and getting him before his likely asking price sky rockets beyond what we can afford. Of course there is also the potential situation where he doesn't develop further, but that is the risk you take with that sort of level of signing.

Lol; "Such poor alternatives":D
Shall i park this alongside your Alderwiereld comments when we were being linked to him last summer?

PS. - Saib was quality imo

It's just harking back to the Redknapp days to want old timers for their 'character'. That's just not how Poch does it. He's the leader and he needs young malleable players who will be subservient to his will. I can't see a 31 YO midfielder having the legs for our system at all.

Tielemans is the worst hyped-because-he's-good-on-FM player I've seen since Shaqiri. Everytime I see him play (including twice against us this season), he's the obvious weak link alongside journeymen like Defour. In fact Dendoncker is the talented midfielder at Anderlecht
