The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

The extra spin may boost crowds, but that will be the only difference between this and the existing reserve league. You look at most reserve teams and they are full of kids with a couple of older pros. Even those with huge first team squads rarely play their first team squad players in the reserves anymore. All this is, is a re-brand.

Was going to say the same thing actually, it's basically a reserve league. I've no problem with that though, think we need it.

Some comments from Northampton fans:

Unless its just to gain fitness , I can't see the point of playing friendlies against Prem teams "XI". I had only heard of one of the Spurs team today ans none of the Chelsea team last week but both of them played with a pace we are unlikely to see in League 2. All 3 Spurs' goals came from very swift counter attacks but I doubt if there'l be any League 2 teams breaking with 4 or 5 lightening quick players ! These teams also keep the ball very well making us do a lot of chasing.

In some ways if they included a few more big name , experienced players who might slow the game down a bit , we might have had more of a chance ! Also is it doing the moral of the team any good losing to what was basically Spurs 3rd team ?

IMO we would be much better off playing more teams of Derby's standard .

Hard to take a lot from the game today considering the Spurs youngsters had so much of the ball.

Trying not to to get carried away the with result from the Northampton game because, if you look at the midfield and forwards:

Bostock: not succeed out on loan anywhere yet
Parrett: not succeed out on loan anywhere yet
Fredericks: looked poor in the Europa last year
Mason: had one decent season on loan at Yoevil but seems to now be permanently injured
Ceballos: not been given the chance on loan or in the carling cup/europa league yet
Coulibaly: not been given the chance on loan or in the carling cup/europa league yet

I think this season is make or break for Bostock and Parrett - they've had numerous chances out on loan and both turn 21 mid-season. If they cant impress wherever they end up this year then I think its curtains for them. The accusation against them will awlays be that, after being signed by a big club for big money at just 15 or 16, that it went to their heads and thought they'd made it

Lets go with two of our squad players:

Rose: not succeed out on loan anywhere
Livermore: not succeed out on loan anywhere

yet both have made the first team plenty of times and at times performed very well. I wouldn't really base anything on loans. Even Towsend has a few good games on loan (like Parrett and Bostock have) but not really got rave reviews like Caulker has and stepped up to the Premeir League yet in terms of loans.

AdamB check out my response to you about Parrett on Page 25 and let's have a discussion about it. Id like to understand why you put him in the same bracket as Bostock.

Mason has had a decent pre season and AVB likes him but I reckon he'll be loaned out again. I'd like to see some youth in the Europa again this season.

What kind of player would you say Parrett is Zin? I've never seen him so much as tie his shoelaces, but I'm always curious about our youth teamers. What would you say his best case/worst case player comparison is?

I don't like to form an opinion based just on what I read but I'm not in the UK to attend games, I tend to take note of someone like Windy when it comes to reports as well as he follows the lads round but from what I've read he's a playmaker, takes set pieces, has a decent shot on him and provides through-balls. Best case scenario VDV. Worst case Dozzell?

I don't see a lot of loans this season, I think this is also the last chance Mason has playing in the U-21 league before being overage so I think the club will want to keep him around and loan out Falque instead - that said we are allowed 3 over-age players.

From what I've seen of him he is more CM than AM. Only seen him about 5 times but he has always looked a little ordinary, even in youth games. Whether that's him being sensible I don't know, but there was nothing in his passing, control or movement to make me think corrrrr...

Alex Inglethorpe feels our Academy squad will reap the benefits of their experience in this year's Eurofoot Tournament in Belgium.

The squad finished 11th in the tournament after beating Anderlecht in a penalty shoot-out on Sunday.

Having lost their opening match of four to eventual winners Atletico Paranaense of Brazil on Friday, the lads bounced back with a 2-1 win against SV Zulte Waregem of Belgium, with Shaquille Coulthirst and Darren McQueen on target.

However, they lost Saturday's three group fixtures to Utrecht, Club Bruges and Standard Liege before Sunday's victory over Anderlecht.

"In the last five years we've gone to the Eurofoot and reached the final four times so the expectation was high and preparation had gone well," said Alex.

"Fortune may have played a part in some of the games but in some, we were found wanting and I think some individuals will have to be helped in terms of playing under pressure.

"Like I said, it doesn't always go the way you expect it to, but that's not to say we didn't have some outstanding performances.

"Josh Onomah was the youngest player in the tournament but for me, the best. Filip Lesniak would be in the same category. So two young players have both excelled. I was delighted with the pair of them and it will be a fantastic experience for the group as a whole."

Squad for NextGen. Spurs have avoided sending any over-age players, probably because of what happened last season.

All eligible players shall belong to the following age category:

Each squad will consist of a maximum 18 players. All players must be born on or after January 1st 1993 although 3 players are allowed in the squad who are born on or after January 1st 1992. Only two of these three players born on ar after January 2nd 1992 are allowed to play at any one time. The inclusion of the 3 older players is an ‘option’ for each participating club and not a stipulation.

Lancaster (5th November 1992) and Ceballos (3rd December 1992) miss out. Every other professional who qualifies for this tournament is going as are all 2nd and 3rd year academy scholars except for Darren McQueen for some reason, although Jack Munns is listed twice on the NextGen site so that could be McQueen.

I wonder why they missed out (Lancaster and Ceballos). From what I can see we haven't brought in any overage players (born in 1992) and we seem to have a very young squad.

Will be interesting to see how we do overall and interesting to see how some of the highest touted youngsters do individually.

All the papers said underage and I think someone on here said it was just unregistered. Nabil Bentaleb wasn't it?

Probably just unregistered? There probably are rules about a minimum age, but that would probably be fairly low. If it was Bentaleb I don't quite see how he would have been too young last season. And we wouldn't have been able to register an underage player surely, so would also have been unregistered.

Not to be anally retentive, but we fielded an underage player last year;)

There's nothing in the rules about minimum age.

No official statement as to who the player in question was or what rule was broken but people thought it was Bentaleb as noone could find his age. Turns out he was 17 which was fine.

One article suggested Liverpool lodged a complaint about 2 ineligible players (Gomelt and Veljkovic maybe who were originally trialists?) whereas Jjetset said it was in the earlier rounds.
