The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

I have to say reading that West Ham statement, it sounds so childish compared to a Spurs statement. We really do write our press releases with a concise authority and I just don't see that from other teams.

They're writing to the mental age of their target audience.

Radical youth shake-up revealed with U21 Premier League set for big kick-off

23 teams confirmed to play in new style group phases before competition culminates in knock-out format

Regional games scrapped in favour of national mix

The Barclays Premier League have confirmed the creation of a new Under-21 competition to bridge the gap between the academy and first team.

The first national showcase for Under-21 players will launch on August 17 when Chelsea host Emirates Marketing Project and Reading visit West Ham.

Teams from 17 Premier League and six npower Championship clubs - effectively all those who applied for category one status - will be divided into three groups.

From January the sides will then be placed into three pools based on their performance, leading to a knockout stage and final.

The emphasis will be on playing Under-21 players with each team limited to just three over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper.

'Each stage of a player's development is tailored to ensuring they have the best possible chance of progressing,' Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said.

'The new Barclays Under-21 Premier League addresses one of the most critical points - the transition from academy football to the highest standards in the first team.

'We believe this competitive environment, where fans can also come along to watch the next generation of Premier League and international players, will help deliver more talented home grown boys to that next level.'

Premier League Director of Youth, Ged Roddy, added: 'Much has been done across the game to modernise the youth system over the last three years.

'Clubs have consistently highlighted the need to create serious competitive games as part of the overall professional game in this country.

'The Barclays U21 Premier League aims to provide that vital transitional step and will become the hardest playground in the world as part of a player’s total education, because the next game may well be a debut in the Barclays Premier League itself.'

'The matches will be structured to complement the Premier League game rounds. So, as a first team manager there is a great benefit in knowing that you can have your U21 player on the bench for the first team, but if he doesn’t play then there’s still the option for him to have high quality competitive football that weekend in the U21 League.'

The Club will compete in the inaugural Barclays Under-21 Premier League next season.

The new league is part of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) and has been devised as part of the new system that will help bridge the gap between Academy and First Team.

We're one of 23 clubs taking part, 17 from the Premier League and six from the Championship.

The teams have been split into two groups of eight and one of seven, with a full home and away programme in the initial group stage.

We will kick-off with a trip to Saudi Sportswashing Machine on Saturday, August 18 - the same day we open our Premier League campaign with a 5.30pm kick-off at St James' Park.

The groups are as follows:

National Group One - Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Norwich City, Reading, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United.

National Group Two - Aston Villa, Manchester United, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford.

National Group Three - Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project, Middlesbrough, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After this first group stage, the clubs will be placed into three groups based on their performance.

The top three teams from National Group One and Two and the top two sides from National Group Three will qualify for the Elite Group, with the other clubs making it into Qualification Group Tier One or Qualification Group Tier Two depending on their finishing position.

The teams will again play home and away with the top three teams from the Elite Group qualifying for the knockout semi-finals.

The winners of the two Qualification Groups will take part in a play-off to decide who will make up the quartet. The semi-final winners will then contest the final.

The emphasis will be on playing U21 players with each team limited to just three over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper.

Cheers for the info. I think a trip to Altrincham may be in order, 10 miles down the road see the young guns take on United.

I wonder where we might play the home games. Driving down on the Friday night before the Norwich match and I quite like the idea of doing a 'double header' on Sept 1st

The emphasis will be on playing U21 players with each team limited to just three over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper.

Matches will be played over weekends from Friday to Monday and will provide clubs the opportunity for U21 players to be available both for the first team fixtures and the Barclays U21 Premier League.

There is a requirement that at least two Barclays U21 Premier League matches must be at the main ground of each club and the play-offs, semi-finals and final also be played at the main grounds of the home clubs.

Looks good, actually glad we get a tough group, this should be about developing players, not results only.

Anyone care to guess our team lineup?

The extra spin may boost crowds, but that will be the only difference between this and the existing reserve league. You look at most reserve teams and they are full of kids with a couple of older pros. Even those with huge first team squads rarely play their first team squad players in the reserves anymore. All this is, is a re-brand.

Disagree entirely. The whole problem with the Reserve league in general was that it had far too much of a mish mash of players with different agendas. Youngsters trying to break through coupled with old pros out of favour just going through the motion and players coming back from injuries. It was one of the fundamental reasons for disbanding it and one of the areas I strongly agreed with Redknapp on in relation to youngsters being exposed to proper football.

I agree that the rebranding and spin will give crowds a boost and give a little extra revenue to clubs so it is about money as much as development but I see no harm in that as a by product of re inventing the reserves. I think the concept of it combined with players going out loan give them a real chance of gaining experience before stepping up fully into our first team squad.

I am pretty sure that unless we have a specific reason for doing so, we will field virtually an entire under 21 side for this fixtures. It will be excellent for the likes of Tom Carroll to spend the first half of the season playing in this league and no doubt playing in the Europa League before maybe spending the 2nd half of the season out on loan at the top of the championship gaining more experiences in differing scenarios.
