how can you tell he looks fitter than ever?

Redknapp said as much didn't he?

Sandro, Parker, Livermore, Carroll, Sigurdsson.......................Moutinho, Nir Biton?

Not forgetting that Vertonghen is a very capable CM too, if required.

Problem is that Carroll is very young and unproven, not sure if he's quite ready yet. Sigurdsson looks a lot better as the attacking midfielder/number 10. That leaves only Moutinho (or some other Modric replacement or Modric himself) as a creative central midfielder. Two out of Sandro, Parker, Livermore and Jenas as the central pairing doesn't fill me with confidence at all.

No No No surely we've moved passed the days of shoehorning central defenders into midfield roles it brings back horrible memeories of Spurs mediocrity.

I don't think it's much of a problem. Carroll has always looked very comfortable whenever he's played for Spurs, IMO. And he's usually been played as part of a lower quality / relatively inexperienced Europa League team. He'd look even better with top class, experienced players around him.

Assuming that we do buy a Modric replacement, we will be better off (in terms of depth) than we were last season when Modric was the only creative central midfielder available to Harry for pretty much the entire season.

Shoehorning?

You are aware that, in addition to being a fine centre back, Vertonghen is also a regular, experienced and very good central midfielder? Plays CM for Belgium.

Been LB in all the Belgium games I've seen (admittedly only two, but I've heard he's played LB in others as well).

Maybe, but he's more usually played in central midfield for Belgium.

IIRC, he also played in midfield when so impressive against Man Utd at Old Trafford last season.

He's certainly struck me as very good on the ball for a centre-back, the best I've seen at Spurs since Ledley who of course played a fair bit in midfield for us in his early career.

Without checking, I think he played at center back. I'm not sure he's played in midfield as much as you think
